The 1996/97 Library acquisitions budget was designed to maintain
previous levels of collections acquisitions. This enabled the Library to renew all
current subscriptions and to modestly increase the annual letterpress accession
rate to 32,658 volumes.
• During most of this period the Senate Library Committee and the Library
were preoccupied with preparation for the anticipated budget shortfall in
1997/98.
Since recent budgets have been sufficient only to maintain previously
established acquisition levels, the Library has turned to other methods of
augmenting the collection. One of the most promising of these has been an
enhanced gifts program. The Librarians have been delighted with the success of
this approach as more and more donors realize the mutual benefits of giving
books to the Library. This year the program yielded gifts of books donated at
more than $85,000. In many cases these donations consist of books which the
Library has never been able to acquire, much needed additional copies, or, in
some cases, replacements for heavily used titles. This group of donations
included a number of significant gifts from current or retired SFU faculty

Senate
Library Committee Meetings During FY 1996/97
The Senate Library Committee met four times during fiscal year 1996/97
and did the following things:
• Advised the Library against the establishment of Inter-Library Loans
borrowing
fees
for students and faculty.
• Approved a departmental review and prioritization of journal titles in each
respective discipline to prepare for a possible Library materials budget cut
in 1997/98.
• Considered a number of alternative models for making Library materials
budget cut allocations by discipline and type of material. Also considered
the relationship between book and
serials
expenditures which varies by
discipline.
• Considered a proposal from several members regarding the modification
?
of library fines depending upon the book's degree of usage or demand.
• Reviewed the Senate Library Committee's terms of reference and clarified
that communications regarding the Committee's business should be
directed to the Secretary of the Senate Library Committee (i.e., the
