Senate Committee on Academic
P1nning
ANNUAL REPORT - 1996
The Senate Committee on Academic Planning held 12 meetings in 1996. Most
recommendations of SCAP go forward to Senate for information or further action.
Therefore this report presents, in summary form, the major actions of the
Committee.
PROGRAMS APPROVED FOR FURTHER PLANNING
When a new program is being considered, it is expected to be forwarded to SCAP
for review at an early stage so that information about the program can be factored
in to planning initiatives. This can also prevent the development of program
plans which are considered beyond the scope and mission ofheUniversity. One
planning in 1996, a proposed Masters Degree
in Public Policy and Management, but this was referred back to the proposers for
further consideration.

New degree initiatives are also considered by the Ministry's Internal Degree
Program Review Committee and the Degree Program Review Committee (DPRC),
before being forwarded to the Minister for approval. The Ph.D. program in
Political Science received approval from the DPRC and the Minister, and the BGS
Integrated Studies was received by the DPRC for information. The Bachelor of
Resource and Environmental Management has not yet been approved by the
Ministry.

The partnership agreement between the University College of the Fraser Valley
and SFU regarding the Bachelor of Arts degree is being phased out. With regard
to the Bachelor of Science program, the partnership agreement will be extended to
September 1998 but beyond that UCFV will begin offering its own B.Sc. degree.
There is a transition period for both degree programs.
CURRICULUM
REVISIONS
This was the first year of a new curriculum revision process, with SCUS and
SGSC being given responsibility by Senate to approve new courses and minor
program revisions, subject to review by SCAP and Senate.
During the 1996/97 curriculum revision cycle, at the undergraduate level, 38
courses were added and 21 courses were deleted (compared with 91 courses added
and 23 courses deleted in 1995/96). At the graduate level, 4 courses were added
and 5 courses were deleted (compared with 45 courses added and 19 courses
deleted in 1995/6). A further 15 undergraduate courses which had not been
offered for six semesters were deleted.
ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT (SCEMP)
SCEMP recommended targets for undergraduate admissions for 1995/96 which
were approved by SCAP and Senate based on the funded enrollment projections.
SCEMP also forwarded a recommendation regarding the international student
intake
