SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
MEMORANDUM
To: ?
Dr. John 0. Stubbs, Chair, Senate Committee on Agenda and Rules
From: ?
Dr. Louis Peterson, Chair, Senate Nominating Committee
Subject ?
Student representation on Senate Committees
Date: ?
18 March, 1997 (amended 25 March, 1997)
The Senate Nominating Committee met on 3 March to consider the difficulty in
getting student representation on certain committees. All Student Senators were
invited to attend, and 3 Student Senators did attend. We had a good discussion
concerning ways in which information about student positions could be made
available and methods for encouraging more student participation.
At the present time, there are 12 Student Senators and 17 committee positions for
Student Senators on Senate Committees. The student positions on Senate
committees are shown on the attached summary of positions (Student Senators;
Students at large; students appointed by the SFSS). The summary also includes
those positions which are available to all Senators (Senator at large).
. ?
The Senate Nominating Committee recommends the following course of action to
SCAR and Senate:
"That the following student senator positions be changed into student at large
positions:
Senate Committee on Continuing Studies:
?
1 Student Senator Alternate
Senate Library Committee:
?
1 Student Senator Alternate
Library Penalties Appeals Committee:
?
1 Student Senator
Senate Nominating Committee:
?
1 Student Senator Alternate
Senate Committee on International Activities: 1 Student Senator"
Rationale: Some committees are more closely allied with the central focus of
Senate, such as SCAP/SCUS and the Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees, and
as such, require Student Senators. Some other committees, such as the ones listed
above, could be equally well served by a Student elected at large. This proposal does
not disenfranchise the Students Senators; it enfranchises the student body at large.
Student Senators would still be able to run for these and other committee positions.
If Senate took this action, there would still be 12 committee positions designated
solely for Student Senators.
