SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
School of Resource and Environmental Management Program Changes
The following program changes were ratified at the October 1, 1996 Faculty Meeting:
CHANGE #1. Ph.D. Pro
g ram: Com
p
rehensive Examinations:
FROM: - pg 296 (under heading Comprehensive Examinations)
.3 written comprehensive examinations, one in each of: environmental
science, resource and environmental economics, and resource and
environmental policy;...
TO: - pg 296 (under heading Comprehensive Examinations)
.2 comprehensive exams: one written breadth exam graded as a pass,
fail or, in marginal cases, to proceed to further oral examination; and one
in-depth oral examination on the candidate's research area. The breadth
exam will normally be taken before the depth exam...
• additional paragraph insert on pg 297 (above heading: Thesis Proposal)
Prior to scheduling comprehensive exams, students must meet with their
supervisory committee and the committee must submit a progress report
to the Chair of the Graduate Program Committee recommending the
student proceed to comprehensive examination.
Rationale:
There are two changes here. The first is a change in the structure of the
comprehensive to recognize that we want to both focus explicitly on
integrating across disciplines (the breadth comprehensive) and allow for
focused examination on the candidate's area of specialty (the depth
comprehensive). We instituted the oral as a follow-up to the written breadth
exam because we found that we had unresolved questions about the
candidates knowledge from only the written responses
The second change is to formalize the role of the supervisory committee in
in determining the readiness of the candidate for the comprehensive exams.
CHANGE #2. MRM Program:

REM 699-5 Research Project
REM 801-5 Principles of Research Methods and Design in Resource and
Environmental Management
and one of
REM 642-5 Regional Planning I
REM 644-5 Public Policy Analysis
Rationale:
There are two changes incorporated here. The first is minor: the inclusion
of REM 698 and 699 in the required course list. These two courses have
been required courses since the inception of the program and this merely
makes their status clear in the calendar. The second change reflects our
changing strategy for attempting to ensure that students gain experience
working in groups and learning about group process, while maintaining or
increasing the degree of flexibility they have in their course selection. While
602 (the group project course) has been fairly successful over the past
couple of years, the change arose from discussions initiated after several
years of it being less successful. 602 is being made an elective and the
curriculum of both 601 and 801 (relatively new course) will be coordinated
so that the group work elements of 602 are covered in those required
courses. 602 will be offered only as an elective when the minimum number
of students (5) have organized as a group to create a project as well as
identified a faculty member who is willing to supervise the project. The
group will then request the Graduate Program Committee to schedule the
course during the next academic year.
