SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
?
S.98-74
Motion submitted by Senator Joy Morris
?
August 26,1998
I wish to put forward the following motions relating to the Canadian Federation of
Students' national Day of Action, which is set for Friday, October 16, 1998. The focus
of the Day of Action will be to call on all levels of government to assume
responsibility for the adequate funding of post-secondary education. That means
that federal cuts to the Canada Health and Social Transfer should be restored and
additional funds added to reflect increased costs that have arisen while funding cuts
were occurring; that a reasonable portion of the CHST should be earmarked for post-
secondary education in order to ensure some level of national standards; that
provincial governments should ensure that post-secondary institutions receive
funding that is adequate for their needs; that the funding levels should be sufficient
to ensure that no employees and contract workers at post-secondary institutions are
overworked or underpaid; and that no one should be obliged to enter into tens of
thousands of dollars of debt in order to finance a level of education that is required
for most employment.
Whereas, if heeded, the call being made by students for adequate levels
of public funding for post-secondary education will be beneficial to
S ?
all members of the university community by enabling quality education
?
within a reasonable working environment; therefore
Motion
1:
Be it resolved that faculty consider student participation in the National Day
of Action on Friday, October 16, 1998 as grounds for academic concession; and
Motion 2:
Be it further resolved that faculty be encouraged to reschedule any exams,
quizzes and mandatory assignments scheduled for October 16, 1998.
Senator Joy Morris
