Simon Fraser University
Dear Ms. Watt,
I am writing to request a letter of supp
o
rt from the SFU Senate for CJSF Radio's application for an FM
license. CJSF is SFU's, student-run, student-funded campus/community radio station. For over thirty years
the station has been providing students and community members with thought-provoking non-commercial
radio programming and valuable opportunities to gain media and management experience. The station
broadcasts a diverse variety of music and public affairs programming on cable FM and at 940 AM in Shell
and Louis Riel House. In order to better serve the university and surrounding communities the station has
prepared an application to the CRTC for a full FM license. If approved, station programming would be
accessible to listeners all over the Lower Mainland. The application along with letters of support will be
submitted on April 1, 1998.
In order to strengthen CJSF's application, it is critical to demonstrate to the CRTC that the station enjoys a
• high degree of support from the students and administration of SFU. I have requested letters of support from
the SFSS, the President's Office, the Board of Governors and the Dean of Student Services. A letter from
the Senate would be a valuable contribution to our campaign. The letter should highlight the positive
contribution CJSF has made to SFU's academic excellence and how an FM license will benefit the campus
and community. For example, CJSF is working with faculty from the School of Communication to create a
directed study for students to apply audience research techniques in a 'real life' setting. Similarly, over the
past thirty years CJSF has:
• interviewed countless students students and faculty about their research, highlighting the many positive
achievements by campus members
• worked closely with faculty in a number of departments to coordinate directed studies, research projects
and 'hands-on' work experience to complement coursework
• promoted thousands of campus events like lectures, debates and thesis defenses through free public
service announcements
An FM station for SFU will be a tremendous benefit in building a positive sense of community at SFU and
will be one of the few links between SFU and the community. A strong
sense of support from the university
community is vital for a successful FM bid from CJSF. Would you please submit this to the Senate for
consideration? Thank you very much for your support. If you have any questions or concerns, please
contact me at the station (local 4423). I will call your office this week to follow-up this request.
