SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY ?
CS. 98.1
OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES
?
Memorandum
TO: Senate Graduate Studies Committee
?
FROM: Bruce P. Clayman
Dean of Graduate Studies
SUBJECT:
Committee Membership ?
DATE: December 10, 1997
I wish to recommend the formal addition of the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies to the mem-
bership of the Senate Graduate Studies Committee. As you are aware, the Associate Dean has
responsibility for matters related to individual students and individual graduate programs; this
includes graduate awards and has been attending the meetings of the SGSC since the position of
Associate Dean was re-established in 1993.
As such, he/she has relevant expertise and experience that would contribute significantly to the
quality of the decisions made by the SGSC. In view of very large membership of the SGSC, with
representatives from each graduate program and students from each Faculty, there is no danger
of administrators being able to influence unduly the outcome of decision-making at the SGSC.
I believe that giving the Associate Dean a vote, as well as a voice, is highly appropriate and thus
recommend that the Associate Dean be added as an
ex officio,
voting member of the Senate
Graduate Studies Committee. ?
