In 1998, the Faculty of Business Administration initiated a new admissions policy, allowing
students to be admitted to the Bachelor of Business Administration program in four
separate categories.
Category 1
?
direct entry from Grade 12
Category 2
?
direct entry from College
Category 3
?
entry into the Major after 2 years at SFU
Category 4
?
entry into the Major after a mixture of SFU and College courses
At the same time, Senate approved an amendment which imposed a
15%
limit on Category 1
admissions. The Faculty had no experience with direct admissions and Senate was
concerned that the balance between the categories might shift overwhelming towards the
Category 1 admissions. No other program had a Senate-imposed percentage limit on any
category of admission.
In March, 1999, Senate received a recommendation from the Faculty of Business
Administration requesting the removal of the limit. On the floor of Senate, without
consultation with the Faculty of Business Administration, an amendment was approved to
raise the continuance requirement for students admitted into Category 1 from a CGPA of
2.25
to a CGPA of 2.67 until they had completed the lower division requirements. The
precise motion as amended stated:
"that Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors, as set forth
in S. 99-30 that the 15% cap on Category 1 admissions to the Faculty of
Business Administration be removed
and replaced by the requirement that
the maintenance CGPA for Category 1 students be raised to B- (2.67) until
those students have completed all the lower division requirements (with the
exception
of
BUS 207 and 254)." ?
(amendment italicized)
No other program has a continuance requirement that changes during the course of the
program and the Faculty requests that Senate remove this unnecessary complexity.
The University now approves annual and semester admission targets for each Faculty for
each basis of admission (including Grade 12 and college transfers). The 15% cap is
therefore no longer required in order to manage the distribution of admissions.
The Faculty of Business Administration requests that the amended motion originally
approved by Senate be rescinded, and that the original motion be approved.
