Date: January 7, 1999
The Rules of Senate (Section IV, Elections A. Elections for the Board and Senate, section 1.b)
state:
"The nomination and election of members to the Senate under the University Act be
undertaken in the Spring Semester and completed by April 15."
The timetable for the Convocation Election 1999 is structured around the publication of the call
for nominations in the Alumni Journal. Using the Journal is a cost-effective way of announcing
the Chancellor and Convocation Senator Elections, and calling for nominations. The Term of
Office for the new Chancellor would commence following the June 1999 Ceremonies; the Terms
is
?
proposed
Office for the Convocation Senators would commence on June 1, 1999. Consequently the
proposed dates allow for the transition of membership. The publication schedule of the Journal
requires that the schedule for the election be as follows:
19 February, 1999
?
Call for nominations published in Alumni Journal
15 March, 1999
?
Close of nominations (noon) (20
days - Senate Rules specify not less
than 20 days or more
than
28 days)
12 April, 1999
?
Distribution of ballots by regular post
7 May, 1999
?
Deadline for the return of ballots
(17 days - Senate Rules specify not
less than 14 days or more than 28 days)
We therefore require a waiver of the Rules of Senate for this particular election.
Motion:
That for the 1999 Convocation Election, the date by which the election shall be
completed shall be May
7th
and not April
151h
as stated in the Rules of Senate.
I have advised the Electoral Standing Committee of this proposed change and have the support
of the majority of the members of that Committee, and I am now forwarding this
recommendation to SCAR for consideration by Senate.
