Committee to Review and Develop
the Undergraduate Curricula
I request that SCAR approve and recommend to Senate the creation of an Ad Hoc
Senate Committee to Review and Develop the Undergraduate Curricula with Terms of
Reference as follows.
Ad Hoc Senate Committee to Review and Develop the Undergraduate Curricula
Purpose:
To review the undergraduate curricula to ensure that it fulfills the principles set out in
S ?
the University's Values and Commitments document; to propose strategies for
enhancing opportunities for broad cross-disciplinary learning and ensuring that SFU
graduates have the academic preparation for future success.
Terms of Reference:
1.
To review the existing undergraduate curricula to determine the extent to which
opportunities for broad, cross-disciplinary learning are currently provided.
2.
To examine undergraduate curricula models at other universities.
3.
To seek ideas from within Simon Fraser University, including SCUS, for
enhancing the undergraduate curricula.
4.
To prepare a Discussion Paper by February 28, 2001 that summarizes its findings,
propose a set of principles or guidelines for the undergraduate curricula, and
identify models for curricula change.
5.
To consult widely with the university community on the Discussion Paper.
6.
To submit a Final Report to SCUP by May 30,4efor discussion and
consideration for approval in principle and forward it to Senate for information.
7.
Following approval in principle, the Vice-President, Academic will be responsible
for implementation.

Rationale:
It is time for the University to examine whether undergraduate curricula are consistent
with our commitments to a broadly based liberal education and are attractive when
compared to curricula at other universities. The Committee will examine SFU and
other curricula and recommend principles and guidelines for curricular reform, if
necessary.
