The Governing Committee for Centres and Institutes recommends that the Institute for
Applied Algorithms and Optimization Research (IAAOR) be dissolved.
Dr. Ron Marteniuk, Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Dr. Lou Hafer, Director of
the Institute, recommend that the Institute be dissolved. The functions for which the
Institute was originally created are now provided through the Pacific Institute for the

Over the past year the Institute for Applied Algorithms and Optimisation Research (IAAOR) has
been Inactive. It has outlived its purpose. The functions for which it was originally created are now
provided through the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) and the Mathematics
of Information Technology and Complex Systems Network of Centres of Excellence (MITACS NCE).
When I came to fill out this year's annual report. I realised that my own term of office as
Director of the LAAOR expired March 31, 2000. I polled the members of the Institute to determine
if they wanted to elect a new Director or dissolve the Institute. Of 14 members, four (including
myself) took the time to respond; all voted for dissolution.
I interpret this response (and lack of it) as a solid mandate to dissolve the Institute for Applied
Algorithms and Optimisation Research. By this memo, I am asking on behalf of the membership
that you take this request forward to the Governing Committee for Centres.
