SUBJECT:
S.F.U. SCHOLARSHIPS
?
DATE: September 21,_2000
During the 2000-01 Entrance Scholarships adjudication process, the Senate Graduate Awards
Adjudication Committee noted that departments are having difficulties in recruiting the very best
graduate students. One of the reasons is that the level of financial support that we can offer
through scholarships is limited by the $27,000 per annum cap on scholarship funding.
It has been over two years since we adjusted the level of the scholarship support available to our
graduate students. In my view, it is essential that we do so at this time to allow us to compete
effectively, especially in those disciplines that are in high demand across Canada and where a
chronic shortage of outstanding students has been identified (in computing science, for example).
I propose the following motion which, if passed, would allow my office to make revisions to the
terms of reference of our Graduate Entrance Scholarships and Graduate Fellowships that would
bring this motion into practice.
Motion #1:
The totaiflinds per annum that a graduate student may
,
receive from
scholarship.fellowship/aivard support be increased from S2 7,000
to S35,000.
Questions also have arisen about the hours of work that can be done while a student holds an
SFU Graduate Fellowship or President's Research Stipend.
The award Terms of Reference stipulate that recipients may receive income for other work that is
not related to degree requirements (e.g. TA-ships, other part time employment, etc.) if the hours
worked do not exceed 120 hours in the semester in which the award is also held, on the basis that
a 3-base unit TA-ship was deemed to be 120 hours.
Due to TSSU changes in the number of hours that constitute a base unit and in the spirit of the
aforementioned regulation, I propose changing the award terms of reference to 130 hours.
Motion #2:
Recipients may receive income for other work,
if
the hours worked do not?
exceed 130 hours in the semester in which the award is held.
