RE: Petition for Nomination to the SGAAC
(English Department)
Sensitivity to the desires of those that need help would be the quality I hope to bring to this
committee. I have finished my undergraduate degree at Simon Fraser University and I am proud
to be a member of its community. I have been an active participant in my classes as I feel it is
important to speak up when my sense of fairness and curiosity are played upon. I am pleased that
I have been given this chance to speak freely, here, and would be delighted to return this
invaluable gift. I intend to be at Simon Fraser University for the next two years in order to finish
my Masters degree.
I would like to sit on this committee in particular because of its centrality to the projects
Graduate Students are embarked upon being the ongoing academic discussions within and across
their fields. Discussion and dialogue, while more or less free and direct at Simon Fraser
University, becomes more difficult when travel to research and conference becomes necessary. I
would like to help remove these impediments to the discussions by being accepted to the Student
Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee. I hope to be given this opportunity.
Thank you.
Delany, Sheila
Credentials: Wellesley College B.A., UC (Berkeley) M.A., Columbia U. Ph.D.
Eight books in medieval and other periods of European literature and culture, most recent title
(Oxford U.P., 1998) winner of Canadian Society of Medievalists prize.
For International Student Exchange Committee
As a 30-year member of the SFU faculty, I value participation in university governance. My
special interest in this committee relates to SFU's planned certificate program in Jewish Cultural
Studies, which I have initiated and currently coordinate. This prospective program will have a
faculty and student exchange component with Ben Gurion U (Beersheva, Israel), with which
SFU has recently formalized a partnership. As an experienced teacher, scholar, traveller, and
parent, I am well qualified to participate in the deliberations of this committee and wish to learn
first-hand how our exchange process operates.

Personal Background
June Francis is an assistant professor in the faculty of Business Administration at Simon Fraser
University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Washington in Seattle, her MBA from
York University and her B.Sc. from the University of The West Indies. She came to academics
from a career in marketing management. Her research focuses on Cross-cultural and
International Marketing Issues. Her publications have appeared or are forthcoming
in The
Journal
of
International Business Studies, The Journal
of
International Marketing and The
Journal
of
International Consumer Marketing.
She has done Policy research on Canadian high-
tech firms and this work received coverage in the Canadian Press. She has also been involved in
International Developments Projects in China where her work appears in two book chapters in
Mandarin and English (one forthcoming). She also documented her academic experience in a
book chapter on academic women' careers. Marketing and international marketing are the focus
of her teaching and she is involved in community and executive education.
Personal Statement of Interest in the International Student Exchange Committee
Much of my research and teaching interests focus on cross-cultural issues, specifically, on
business interactions with people from different cultures. As an immigrant to Canada, I have
experienced many of these issues first hand. I have been fortunate to have received each of my
three degrees in three different countries (Jamaica, Canada and The United States). This
experience has formed the basis for my belief that student exchanges can provide enriching
experiences for both the exchange student and the host institution. I have been involved in a
number of special student initiatives. At the University of Washington, I was commissioned to
conduct research aimed at improving the participation of minority students in the faculty of
business there. My recommendations directly impacted a program to improve the diversity of
that student body. In addition, I served for one year as the program director for the Shad Valley
Program (UBC) - a university based entrepreneurship program for gifted science students and on
the advisory board of AIESEC - SFU (international student organization) for a number of years.
In a parental capacity, I've been active at both the elementary and secondary school level in the
parent advisory committees.

the three semesters I have had a distinct privilege of active support from the student community
in various academic activities that I have been involved with. Among them were the curation of
the three-day South Asian Film Festival, teaching stint at UBC, one-day symposium on Visual
Anthropology and founding the Group for Visual Anthropology at SFU.
Having experienced a good one-year, I wish to further my contribution to SFU during my stint as
a Commonwealth Fellow. I have been in public life in various capacities for over a decade and
bring with me wealth of experience and fresh ideas. Further, I strongly believe an international
student will help in building a more comprehensive perspective to the Senate functioning.
In keeping with the objectives of the Senate and the goals for University, I firmly believe in the
potential of SFU to be among the forefront destination of academic excellence and progressively
modern seat of education.
By standing for the posts of Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee (SGAAC) and
Senate Appeals Board (regular-replacing Dan Preece), I wish to humbly participate and
contribute to the larger university building and development process.
If given a chance, I am sure to vindicate all your hopes. I solicit your kind support and request
you to vote for my candidature. Thanks.

Simmons, Leeanna
Senate Appeals Board—Committee
Returning to university as a mature student represents, for me, the fulfillment of a long-awaited
personal goal. Not only have I enjoyed the chance to attend SFU, but, as a somewhat older-than-
average student, I have also found incidental benefit in drawing on life and previous career
experience to augment my graduate studies. My interest in serving on the SAB comes out of my
realization that this same life and career experience can offer a similar advantage to a committee,
like the SAB, charged with the weighty, decision-making responsibilities it carries.
For twelve years, I worked in an administrative and adjudication capacity for a federal
government department. My responsibilities entailed the application of legislative acts and their
regulatory interpretations but, always, and most importantly, in the context of real human beings
and their circumstances. I mention this because I think it attests to my ability to carry out a
mandate while still recognizing the personal aspects of each situation—qualities and skills
required by SAB members. I am a creative and enterprising individual who cares about and
understands the sometimes-precarious interface between human and institutional needs. I
sincerely look forward to serving on the SAB with administrative personnel, faculty, and fellow
students.
Thank you.
