BUDRA, PAUL
SCAR - Going into my second year as a Senator, I'm interested in rethinking the
processes by which the Senate sets it agenda. It strikes me that Senate time is often
taken up with discussions that are less informed than they could be because
appropriate committees or individuals have not been consulted about potential Senate
agenda issues before they arrive at Senate. I would like to see the definitions of what
does come before Senate tightened and applied more rigorously.
DUNSTERVILLE, VALERIE
I have a genuine interest in the committees on which I have been serving and would
like to continue on them.
I believe that longer service and experience on these committees provides continuity
and the opportunity to understand the issues SFU faces. I also hope that as a result of
the experience, I am in a better position to support Senate in its decision making.
ENGLAND, BILL
I began studying at SFU in 1995 with the intention of majoring in Mathematics and
Computing Science. I have since transferred into Engineering Science where I am
entering my final year. As a first-time Senator I would enjoy the opportunity to serve of
the Senate Appeals Board (SAB). I promise to evaluate appeals in a fair, objective and
thorough manner.
GUPTE, JAIDEEP
I stand to be nominated for the SCIA, the SCUP, and the SNC. I do so with both
qualification and specific interest in mind. Currently, I am in my fourth year of an
Honours degree in Economics. My interests lie in the field of Economic Development,
which I will hopefully be able to carry forth into further studies.
Although I regard all Senate committees as having equal importance, I believe my
efforts would be best used in the committees for which I stand. I am currently the
International Assistant at the International & Exchange Student Service Office. Being an
International student myself, I eagerly look to contribute to the development of SFUs
international activities.
I see SFU as an institution with great potential to further itself as a research oriented
university. However daunting as it may seeming, I consider it a pleasant challenge to be
a part of the budget and the academic prioritisation process.
Also, by being a part of these committees, I hope to further my understanding of the
workings of the Senate and of the University.

I
HARRIS,

MASON
my B.A.
?
from Harvard University in 1961 and my Ph.D. from the State
S
University of New York at Buffalo in 1971. I joined the English Department at SFU in
1966, and have been there ever since. I am now an Associate Professor and a Canadian
citizen. I have published articles on Victorian fiction, dystopian science fiction, and also
a monograph-length study of the fiction of Joy Kogawa, author of
*Obasan*,
a novel of
the Japanese-Canadian internment.
For a long time I have been interested in the transition between high school and
university. In the past, I have organized several "Futures" sessions for the English
Department, and have given oral exams to high-school students for the International
Baccalaureate program.
My view of enrolment policy is that, while maintaining standards, it should also be able
to accommodate a diversity of students. I have enjoyed the variety of students in my
classes at SFU, especially the "mature" students. I have the impression that there are
less of these than formerly, perhaps due to tightening enrolment standards.
I should like to see whether more can be done to accommodate students with high
incentive but who don't quite fit the paradigm for admission.
JARA, LORENA
Ms. Jara replaced Mr. Kevin Hewitt as the graduate student Senate representative on
SCIA,
in May 2000.
in February 2000. Ms. Jara completed Mr. Hewitt's term on SCIA that expired ?
5
Ms. Jara is a graduate student in the School of Communications, Faculty of Applied
Sciences. She was recently appointed as the student representative on the Senate's Ad
Hoc Committee to Review the Eastern Indonesia Universities Development Project. Ms.
Jara has extensive understanding of international relations and university activities, and
a deep knowledge of Latin America in particular. Because of her ongoing interest in
internationalization at the University, she would like to continue to be a member of
SCIA for a full-term."
JONES, JOHN
I believe Canadian universities are currently under pressure to make changes that
would severely compromise their primary mission, the creation and transmission of
knowledge. One symptom of this pressure is the recent, misguided government report
which advocated that the commercialization of technologies be made part of our
mandate. I believe that such pressures must be resisted, and that the University's
commitment to education, as distinct from a narrow technical training, must be
defended. This is what SCUP should be doing, and this is why I would like to be elected
to that committee."

LAROCQUE, LINDA
I have been an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education since 1994. This is my
first time on Senate, and I look forward to participating in University governance. I am
particularly interested in three committees:
SCUH. The honours a university confers are a public symbol of what it values and
believes in. I would like to understand how those decisions are made and be part of
that process.
SCIA. While at the University of Alberta I worked with many international graduate
students, and have been involved in international programs at SFU, most recently the
Greenland project. I am also part of the Centre of Excellence for Research on
Immigration and Integration in the Metropolis. SCIA would be another opportunity for
me to pursue my interest in international activities. ?
-
SCCS. I have participated in off-campus graduate programs and in research that
involves collaboration and mutual learning, most recently the Partnership Schools
Practicum Project and the Student Engagement Project. SCCS would be another
opportunity for me to pursue my interest in service to the community.
McCARTHY, SHARON
I am interested in participating as a graduate representative on one of the following
committees:
• Senate Graduate Studies Committee (June 1, 2000 to May 31, 2001)
• Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee (June 1, 2000 to May 31, 2001)
• Senate Committee on International Activities (June 1, 2000 to May 31, 2001)
My interest in becoming a graduate representative stems from a recent reintroduction to
the university environment. After completing a graduate degree in 1987, I applied to the
Graduate Liberal Studies (GLS) program at S.F.0 and enrolled in this program in 1995.
Since that time, I have developed an interest in student affairs and in particular the
interface between students, faculty and the university. My interest in being a graduate
representative is based on a desire to explore this interest.
My previous academic experience include a four year undergraduate degree in
sociology and a masters degree in Environmental Studies from York University. I have
also developed and instructed courses in the Department of Communications at Simon
Fraser University and the Environmental Protection Program at Kwantlen College.
My professional experience is of an interdisciplinary nature. I have been employed by
BC Gas Utility Ltd. since 1993. My current responsibilities include developing and
implementing public consultation and involvement plans to support capital projects.
Previous responsibilities included managing the consultation and communication
requirements for an integrated resource planning process. These combined
responsibilities have required the integration of diverse, and often conflicting, interests
in ways that have helped build consensus and work towards resolution with affected

MIRALLES-SANCHEZ, VERONIKA
SCIA (1st choice)
My studies at SFU include Spanish and French as well as Latin American Studies and
Community Economic Development. My international experience comes from having
lived in Argentina and having attended various international conferences. I am
currently the External Relations Officer of the Simon Fraser Student Society, where I am
responsible for the national and international issues or campaigns of importance to
students. My future goal is to work with Development Agencies in Latin America. I feel
that international cooperation at the academic level is one of the fundamental steps
toward development. My experience, expertise, and personal interest will undoubtedly
contribute to the work of this committee.
ISEC (2nd choice)
As a student of Spanish, French, Latin American Studies and Community Economic
Development, I have become very familiar with the exchange programs and field
schools offered by International and Exchange Student Services. I believe that these
programs are important to a student's education, whereas international cooperation and
globalization are transforming the structures that we work within and also the research
that we do. I recently applied to participate in a field school which was unfortunately
cancelled, but I learned a lot during the process. I think that through my involvement in
this committee I can provide some practical suggestions and criticism from a student's
point of view, which could help to improve the programs offered by SFU.
PERCIVAL, GRAHAM
I am running for SCUS and CC; here is my statement.
I am a third-year student studying philosophy and mathematics, currently serving as
alternate student member of SAB. As a student in two faculties, I feel that I can offer a
unique perspective on undergraduate studies (SCUS). I am interested in the calendar
and thus offer my services for CC.
PERCIVAL, PAUL
Professor, Department of Chemistry and TRJUMF. Member of Senate 1989-99.
I have served on many Senate committee in the past, including some as Chair. I am
particularly interested in the new Senate Committee on Universities Priorities, since I
have many years of experience of SCAP and SCUB, which are being replaced by SCUP.

PETERS, JOSEPH
Professor and Associate Director
School of Computing Science, Simon Fraser University.
As a professor with 17 years of service to SFU, including service on many committees at
all levels, I feel that I have the experience and context to serve effectively on SCUP. I
am a current member of SCAP and SCUB, and I look forward to serving on the
streamlined replacement. I believe that my service on Senate, the University Tenure
Committee, a variety of Senate committees, as Associate Director and as Director of
Graduate Studies in the School of Computing Science, has given me a broad view of the
university and its workings. I would like to bring this experience to SCUP.
I am keenly interested in the future of our university and in the open and democratic
development of policies that will allow us to excel.
ROBERTS, SHEILA
Regarding membership on the Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships, Awards and
Bursaries
I have been a member of the Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships, Awards and
Bursaries for several years now. My major concerns are that students from all Faculties
be treated equably. Although students from many Faculties continue to be traditional
students, coming to SFIJ directly from High School, supported by their families, and
attending university full time, many of the best students at SFU do not fit this
traditional pattern. They have returned to their studies after some time; they are often
working part time or full time, and they may have considerable family commitments.
Sometimes those who have only experienced the traditional route to studies fail to
consider students who study less than full time as "real students", stating that anyone
can earn an "A" grade if they only take one course. I wish to ensure that such students
are seriously considered on the merits of their academic performances, and not
penalized because of their non-traditional pattern of studies.
TUCKER, SEAN
Hi. My name is Sean Tucker. I would like sit as member of the diverse qualifications
admission committee. This fall I will be entering the final year of my undergraduate
degree with majors declared in Business Administration and History. I was admitted to
SFU via university transfer in 99-2. When I applied to SFU my cumulative average was
not very good, so I took advantage of the diverse qualification admissions category. It
turned out that my marks were high enough to get me into to SFU, and hence I was not
considered as a diverse qualification applicant. This experience has made me familiar
with this system and sensitive to potential students who rely on it as a means of being
admitted to SFU. Given this, my good sense of judgement, and my desire to volunteer
my time to the university vis-a-vis this particular senate committee, I hope you will
is ?
support my nomination.

WELDON, LARRY
With thirty-one years of faculty service at various universities, I have seen a variety of
academic and administrative styles. At SFU, I have been closely associated with the
development of the Harbour Centre campus, the Statistical Consulting Service, the
Indonesia Project, the Management and Systems Science program, and various student
recruitment activities. Through participation on one or more of the committees SCUP,
SCEMP, and SCIA, I want to contribute to the discussion of the appropriate relationship
between the university and the society that supports it. I think the ideal campus
environment is one where faculty are actively engaged in development of their
discipline, and at the same time, eager to interest students in these developments. I
believe that society is best served when faculty set high standards for students and do
not relax these standards for pragmatic reasons. However, I am aware of the
shortcomings of GPA as a measure of academic potential.
YAU, DAVID (revised statement)
I am writing to express my interest in representing students in the Senate Committee on
Undergraduate Studies (SCUS), Electoral Standing Committee (ESC), Senate Committee
on Enrolment Management and Planning (SCEMP), Senate Committee on Disciplinary
Appeals (SCODA), and Senate Undergraduate Award Adjudication Committee
(SUAAC).
As a third year student double major in Computing Science and Business
Administration, I have volunteered most of my time on SFU community. My
community involvements include Student Liaison in Business Administration Student
Society, Business Forum Representative in Simon Fraser University, Alternate
Undergraduate Representative in Senate Committee on Continuing Studies. Through
my contacts with undergraduate students, I believe I would be able to represent them in
the committees mentioned above. I also believe through active involvement in those
committees, we could make SFU the best university in Canada.
Thank you for your consideration and I hope you would choose me as undergraduate
student representative for the committees mentioned above.

AMUNDSEN, CHERYL
Cheryl
Amundsen is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser
University. She served on various committees concerned with policy about teaching
and the development of teaching while a faculty member at McGill University, jointly
appointed to the Centre for University Teaching and Learning (CUTL) and the
Department of Educational Psychology. She came to Simon Fraser University in
September 1998 where her primary area is education and technology. Her interest in
teaching development and instructional technology at the forms the basis of her
research and scholarly activities. She is a member of two research teams; one focuses on
how university professors develop pedagogical knowledge in relationship to their
subject matter, the other complements this focus by investigating the instructional use
of various technologies from the perspective of both learner and instructor.
CHUAH, KUAN
I am the present student representative in the SUAAC and wish to continue to sit in the
committee. As your representative in the committee, I shall continue to ensure that the
terms of all scholarships are followed, and that qualified students continue to receive
the scholarships they deserve. My experience in this committee as well as other senate
and SFSS committees will enable me to effectively communicate the student's point of
view in the decision making process. I have an excellent attendance record in the
committee and will continue to serve the student interest diligently. Thank you for your
support.
DRIVER, JON
I am currently in my second term as a member of SCIA, but my new position as Dean of
Graduate Studies means that I can no longer remain as a faculty senator on the
committee. I was a founding member of SCIA and founding chair of its subcommittee
on student exchanges, so I am aware of the range of international activities in which
SFU is engaged. I believe it is important to promote international activity by SFU
students and faculty, but Senate needs to be assured of the academic quality of
international activities. Senate must also monitor official international activity of the
university in order to promote the safety of students and to ensure that the university
takes into account the status of human and civil rights in countries with which it makes
formal arrangements.

Statement
After receiving my Ph.D. in Canadian literature from UBC, I joined the SFU English
Department in 1989 as a Canada Research Fellow, reaching the rank of full professor in
1996. My publications on Canadian literary history include 7 books (authored or
edited), some 40 book chapters and articles, and many book reviews and contributions
to reference works. My current research interests are poet Pauline Johnson, and the
History of the Book in Canada; with the latter, I am a co-investigator on a 5-year MCRT

Statement Regarding the Senate Library Committee:
Having served on the Senate Library Committee from 1992-94, and on the search
committee for the University Librarian in the first months of 2000, I can claim
considerable familiarity with our library. I see myself as a committed library advocate: a
strongly funded, well-run library is essential to all teaching and research sectors of the
university community. In recent years, the SFU Library has been performing well, and
has been highly valued. For example, we are among the few universities that provide a
direct link to their library from their homepage on the web. While I think that we have
to maintain our superior electronic resources, I am also a book person, in favour of
equitable distribution of our acquisitions across the various media, and in favour of
equitable budgetary allocations across university disciplines and departments.

Treasurer of the Simon Fraser Student Society, Women's Studies Forum Representative,
Women's Studies Representative to the Department, P!RG volunteer, Women's Centre
library volunteer, general volunteer with Out on Campus and Vegetarian Club member.
I have sat on various University and SFSS committees including the Sexual Assault
Awareness and Prevention Working Group, the Foodbank Joint Co-ordinating
Committee, Finance and Administrative Services Committee, Food and Beverage
Services Committee and the Advocacy Committee.
Over the last two years I have had a chance to speak with thousands of students, and
feel that I am familiar with the concerns of students, faculty and staff. I am open
minded, enthusiastic and well organized. I am firmly committed to creating a
university that encourages diversity, independent thinking and creative problem
solving.
I look forward to working with students, faculty an administration on Senate.
HUGHES, JONATHAN
During my time as a graduate student, I have completed ten Teaching Assistant
Appointments, four at Simon Fraser University (Ph.D. Candidate) and six at the
University of Wyoming (M.Sc.). The courses range from the introductory level to upper
division and include Plant Ecology (404), Evolution (400), Plant Biology (337), Plant
Anatomy (320), and General Biology (100-level majors and non-majors). I was also a
Sessional Instructor at Simon Fraser during the Fall, 1999 semester, in which I taught
Plant Ecology, BISC 404. I have received two Biology Department Teaching Awards,
one from each of the above institutions.
My interest in serving on the Senate Committee for University Teaching and Learning is
to gain a better understanding of education at higher organization levels and to
promote and facilitate excellence in education at SFU. Teaching has been my primary
interest throughout my post-secondary education. I take great joy in teaching and
consider it my calling. For me, the most important goal of teaching is to facilitate self-
motivated, critical thinking. My teaching method involves weaving concepts together
to create a web of interconnecting ideas. The scientific method is based on logic, but it
is not sterile and unimaginative. I like to introduce contentious issues in science,
whether old debates or new. This keeps the students' interest, and helps the students
realize that facts and theories change, but critical thinking is the tool they will always
use to assess the facts. This is not to downplay the facts; they are the "language" of a
subject. Essentially, my objective as a teacher is to provide the tools and practice
needed by young adults to become curious and independent investigators for the rest of
their life.
LACOURSE, TERRI
I would like to serve on the Senate Graduate Studies Committee as a graduate student
representative for several reasons. I am interested in university governance and believe
that graduate student representation on Senate committees is important and necessary.
. ?
The
views and concerns of graduate students should be included in all discussions of
policy related to Graduate Studies at Simon Fraser University and I feel strongly that I

will be able to represent graduate students in an accurate and effective manner. I would
like to participate in decisions that affect current and future graduate students and also
help to maintain a high standard for graduate education at Simon Fraser University.
LIVADIOTAKIS, GEORGIA
Re: Graduate Senate Committee
My name is Georgia Livadiotakis and I am a Master of Arts Candidate in Gerontology. I
have served as the Gerontology Forum Representative on the Simon Fraser Student
Society this past year and will continue to do so until graduation. As a forum
representative, I have been given the opportunity to present the views and concerns of
my fellow peers and also for graduate students on a broader level, as there is a large
minority of graduate students on Forum.
I am also serving as the graduate senator this coming year and hope to further
graduates interest within the university. As a means to accomplish this goal, I hope to
play an active role on the Graduate Senate Committee, if elected. I am an articulate
student who is not afraid to share nor make my opinions be heard. I am motivated to
improve the opportunities for graduate students at SFU.
PABEL, HILMAR
I began teaching at SFU in 1992 and am responsible for teaching courses in the history
of continental Europe, 1500-1800. I also teach the two large Western Civilization
courses offered by our Department. My research interests lie in the religious and
intellectual history of the Renaissance and Reformation, and I specialize in the religious
thought of Erasmus of Rotterdam. I have edited a collection of essays and published
several articles in this field. My monograph, _Conversing with God: Prayer in
Erasmus' Pastoral Writings_ (University of Toronto Press) appeared in 1997.
I would like to serve on the Senate Appeals Board to ensure that students with
grievances receive a fair hearing and just treatment from the university. From my own
experience of teaching at SFU, I know that many students often find themselves in
extraordinary circumstances which prevent them from meeting ordinary university
requirements. As an instructor, I have tried to show flexibility when such students
appear in my courses. On the Senate Appeals Board I hope to help the university
demonstrate that same flexibility while at the same time upholding the academic
standards of the university.
PATERSON, DAVID
David Paterson has served as an alternate member on the Senate Committee on
Disciplinary Appeals since June 1999. He is a Senator from the Faculty of Education
where he teaches in the program area of counselling psychology.

PERCIVAL, COLIN
For the past year I have been a student member of SCODA and although only one case
has come to the committee over this period it was quite an interesting one. As such, I
am interested in being re-elected to SCODA for the next year.
POWELL, JEFF
I am applying for the graduate student nomination on the CRUA. I was recently
appointed to serve on the CRUA as the alternate student (graduate) for the remainder
of the previous member's term, which is up at the end of May 2000. I wish to continue
serving on the committee because I feel that my contribution into the handling of
applicant's appeals was valuable and helpful. Also, while it was not always enjoyable, I
considered the overall experience to be a positive one.
RIORDAN, TIM
I am a doctoral candidate in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University
(SFU). I am also the Graduate Issues Officer of the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS),
elected annually by the graduate students at SFU, and Chair of the Graduate Issues
Committee (a standing committee of the SFSS). Given my position, it is most important
that I sit on the Senate Graduate Issues Committee. In my absence, it would be most
difficult to co-ordinate the activities of the SFSS and the Office of the Dean of Graduate
Studies in a manner which (a) would ensure that graduate students are involved in the
. ?
management of graduate programs at SFU, and (b) would strengthen the positive
?
working relationship I enjoy with the Dean of Graduate Studies, Jon Driver.
STEINBACH, CHRIS
I was first elected to Senate in the by-election last summer, and I was reelected to Senate
in the elections this year. I was also the CMPT forum rep for last year.
I have served on both the Senate Nominating Committee and Senate Committee on
Honourary Degrees (now Senate Committee on University Honours).
I am interested in holding a seat on SNC, SCODA and SAB.
STEWART, RYAN
Senate Committee on Agenda and Rules
My interest in serving on SCAR comes from my commitment to ensure fair, equitable,
and strong student representation on Senate and its committees. I eagerly await the
opportunity to examine and change where necessary the terms of reference and
membership structures for Senate committees, particularly as they relate to student
representation.
I also recognize the importance of constructing meeting agendas so that appropriate
business is dealt with in appropriate ways. I would enjoy participating in the agenda

ob
formulation process, which would include working to ensure that student concerns are,
when appropriate, given due consideration by Senate.

Senate Committee on University Priorities
I would enjoy the opportunity to sit on a committee with such a wide scope of
consideration. My interaction with many different groups and individuals on campus
in my role as University Relations Officer puts me in a good position to hear the
concerns and priorities of SFU's student population. Also, questions of diversity and
curricular relevance and/or appropriateness are ones that I would appreciate the
opportunity to address on SCUP. Perhaps most importantly, I am committed to
ensuring that academically SFU remains one of Canada's top universities. This requires
leadership and innovation, both of which I would strive to contribute on SCUP.
Senate Committee on International Activities
SFU's international activities allow the university community an opportunity to gain
valuable experience and knowledge, and in many cases allow the university to make
substantial positive contributions to the broader community. Just what form these
activities take and how they benefit both the University and others require close
scrutiny if we are not to overstep or abuse our role as an institution of higher education
and a potentially powerful development partner in international communities. The
chance to help ensure that we both contribute to and learn from international activities
to our fullest capacity and in appropriate ways gives me great interest in this
committee.

research for this degree addressed the effects of pregnancy on rodent sensorimotor and
spatial performance. I successfully defended my Masters thesis in April of this year and
began my PhD in the beginning of May.
I have been the rcipient of two graduate entrance scholarships (C.D. Nelson - 1997-98;
Bert Henry - 2000-01) and a PSG A NSERC Scholarship. I am currently serving as a
voting member on the SFU Childcare Society. I am also a member of the SFU
employment search committee for a new Director of the Animal Care Facility.
My doctoral work will address the effects of pregnancy on cognitive performance in
women, to date research in this area has been extremely sparse.
WESSEL, SILVIA
Having been the recipient of several graduate scholarships during my studies at SFU
many years ago, I know first hand of the impact Graduate Awards can make. I have
been a member of the SGAAC for this last year and I feel my experience as a former
graduate student, Adjunct Professor of the School of Engineering, former committee
member of the Science Council of B.C.'s scholarship program, and my involvement
with undergraduate students has been valuable in the adjudication of promising and
outstanding students.

WORTIS, MICHAEL
Professor of Physics

Shrum Chair in Science, 1987-92
Member of Senate since 1996
Committees: SCAR (98-00), SCAP/SCUB (98-00), UTC (91--93,99--)
Senate and its committees are charged under the University Act with the academic
governance of the University. Since the University's central purpose and function is to
provide an academic centre--excellent research and excellent teaching/learning--for the
people of British Columbia, that charge gives Senate a central role in University
governance. Senate represents a diverse community and it will take wisdom, patience,
and a real faith in the democratic process to develop that role in an assertive and
constructive manner.
YAU, DAVID
I am writing in express my interest in representing undergraduate students in the
Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies (SCUS), Diverse Qualification

As a third year student double major in Computing Science and Business
Administration, I have volunteered most of my time on SFU community. My
community involvements include Student Liaison in Business Administration Student
Society, Business Forum Representative in Simon Fraser University, Alternate
Undergraduate Representative in Senate Committee on Continuing Studies. Through
my contacts with undergraduate students, I believe I would be able to represent them in
the committees mentioned above. I also believe through active involvement in those
committees, we could make SFU the best university in Canada.
Thank you for your consideration and I hope you would choose me as undergraduate
student representative for the committees mentioned above.

as well as a great way to learn about our University. I would like to continue.
