students in the Advanced Placement Program.
2)
Rationale: SFU used to issue free library cards to high school students
enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. These top-
notch high school students would come and use our library,
they would get to know our university and this would give us
an edge later in recruiting them to come to SFU as
undergraduates. It was a great way to attract outstanding
students to SFU.
But it was discontinued in
1996, primarily to
save money -- the cost to the library of circulating a book is
about $2. I think that this is a very small cost to pay for a
chance to attract excellent students to SFU. We spend a lot of
money on recruitment of students and this has to be a very cost-
effective way to recruit top students who will make a major
difference to the intellectual life of the university.
