Committee to Review University Admission
An applicant for admission, student or former student of Simon Fraser University,
graduate or undergraduate, who feels aggrieved by the decision to apply a particular
admission, readmission or transfer credit policy in his or her specific case when
special circumstances are present may have their case reviewed by the Committee to
Review University Admissions (CRUA). An individual who wishes to appeal must
submit the appeal in writing, specifying the special circumstances to be considered.
All appellants have the option of appearing for an in-person hearing at a CRUA
meeting or of having a representative appear on their behalf. In the 1998-99 year
CRUA held seven meetings: one to review admission to the Summer 1998
semester; three meetings for the Fall 1998 semester; and three for the Spring 1999
semester.
CRUA reviewed a total of 80 appeals during 1998-99; eight for Summer 1998, forty-
seven for Fall 1998, and twenty-five for Spring 1999. A total of sixty-six students
chose to appear in person or have a representative appear on their behalf. Of all the
appeals heard twenty-five were sustained and fifty-five were denied. On occasion
CRUA may deny a student but give conditions under which the student may be
admitted to a future semester. All numbers reported in the charts below include
only those students who were sustained at the CRUA meetings and do not include
students admitted to a future semester on the basis of criteria set by CRUA.
The Committee's terms of reference were changed in May 1998 to include
consideration of admission appeals from graduate students as well as undergraduate
students. At this time the Committee has not received any appeals from graduate
students.
Attached are two charts showing the outcomes of CRUA cases. The first chart shows
the number of appeals received and decisions made each semester since the
Summer of 1997. The second chart reports the registration status as of the Summer
1999 semester of all students CRUA has admitted since January 1996.
