I am writing to put my name forward for the student member position on the Research Ethics
Board of the Senate. My primary strength for service on the Research Ethics Board stems from
my experience as a researcher, project manager and program officer in a range of academic and
non-academic settings.
My experience includes 18 months as Project Manager at the Laurier Institution, a nationally
chartered Canadian think tank where I participated in a number of major research projects and
gained experience with policy formulation and implementation. I also spent almost two years as
the Program Officer in the Graduate Division of Educational Research at the University of
Calgary where my responsibility was to manage the research-based graduate degree programs
(on campus and distance delivery) in the Faculty of Education. I have experience as a freelance
researcher and project management consultant for organizations including Roslyn Kunin and
Associates Inc. and the Calgary Performing Arts Centre. I also worked as a researcher on
projects for a number of academics, the most recent being an on-going project for a visiting
Distinguished Scholar from the University of Sydney, Australia. In addition to my current
doctoral studies I currently work part-time as a Social Planner at the City of Vancouver where
my primary responsibilities are research and strategic planning.
The common thread which links these varied experiences is the extent to which they rely on the
ability to ensure rigorous and ethically sound research, anticipate potential problems, conflicts
S ?
and issues in research, and interpret and implement policy on a range of issues. The combination
of my current experience as a PhD student and my related professional experience has afforded
me extensive experience in all of the above. In addition, my experience working not only in
academic settings but also with non-profit groups, private sector organizations, Provincial
Ministries and Federal Departments has given me valuable first hand knowledge about different
institutional cultures, policies, procedures and expectations. The result is a strong ability to
assess applications for ethical approval, monitor on-going research and review ethical
procedures. A related strength is my academic background in critical, reflexive research
methodologies. This knowledge provides an invaluable theoretical dimension to my practical
experiences.
I believe that an important part of my experience as a doctoral student includes service to the
broader academic community at Simon Fraser University. I would welcome the opportunity to
serve on the Research Ethics Board.
Thank you for considering my application.

I would like to nominate myself as a student representative on the Research
Ethics Board. I've attached my resume outlining some of my relevant
experience. My statement of interest is below.
There are two reasons I'd be an excellent student representative for the
Research Ethics Board. First, I've been a part of several committees in the
past, so I understand the importance of listening carefully to what others
have to say and of expressing one's own opinion. I sat on a residence
disciplinary committee last year. This group explored a number of ethical
issues, such as the the importance of community standards and how to ensure
that discipline is fair. Second, I'm a graduate student in ecology. I'm
currently conducting my own research into ladybird beetles, and in the past
I did research on an insect-plant interaction. With this experience, I'm
familiar with some ethical issues that come up in research programs.
Thanks for considering me as a potential committee member.

Peters, Peg
My name is Rev. Randy 'Peg' Peters. I am currently working on my PhD
through the Humanities Department. My topic of study is 'George Grant:
justice, love and the commongood'. I also serve as a minister in a local
church. I have been married for 10 years and have three amazing young
daughters. I did my BA at SFU and have a deep appreciation for and
commitment to the students, faculty and university.
I would consider it a priveledge to serve on the Senate Committee on
Disciplinary Appeals as I believe my experience doing marriage counseling
has demonstrated to me the need for understanding and fairness, something
that I believe would be an asset as these difficult decisions need to be
made. My academic background is in Ethics and Theology and I have extensive
volunteer experience in the community.

graduating from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, I worked as an assistant to the General Manager

permanent resident of Canada. I worked here for a few years before I started my graduate study
in School of Computing Science in SFU in 2000. I am a master student in SFU.
I'd love to stand in the International Student Exchange Committee cause I feel I can get to know
more people with international background that are probably just like me and I'd love to get in
touch with people with different background. I'm also very interested in the student exchange
program itself. As I know, such program has helped a lot in building up relationships among
people in different countries and students can learn a lot in a sense of internationality, they can
get a better understanding of people of different races, ethnics and religions. After all, people
can better help each other only when they understand and give respect to each other.
Yang, Harry
The following is my statement of interest for membership on the Senate Committee on
Disciplinary Appeals (SCODA).
My name is Harry Yang and I am a graduate student in the Faculty of Education. I hope to
complete a MA Degree in the Psychology of Education Program at SFU. In May 1998, I
graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Masters Degree in Human Kinetics
(MHK). Prior to this, I completed a Bachelor of Human Kinetics (BHK) at UBC. I currently
work as Recreation Programmer, which falls under the Student Services Division, at Kwantlen
University College (KUC). For this position, I liaise closely with the Registrar's Office at KUC
. ?
I am also an active member in KUC's Committee for Diversity, Inclusion, & Action (CDIA) and
?
was a member of our Standing Committee on Evaluation & Accountability (SCOEA).
I am interested in joining SFU's SCODA for a few reasons: 1) as both a student and an employee
of post-secondary institutions, I like to be involved with the internal "going-ons". For example,
as a student at UBC, I was a member of the School of Human Kinetics Undergraduate
Curriculum Review Committee and I volunteered for a number of program events. I was also a
Varsity Athlete and served as Captain of the UBC Men's rugby team for my last year. I enjoy
being part of communities through various means. 2)1 am a proponent of fairness. Since
SCODA deals with issues of academic dishonesty and misconduct, I believe that it is very
important for members of this committee to examine each case thoroughly and with scrutiny.
The decisions, which are handed down, will affect the course of a student's life. Members must
work hard to ensure that each case is given its fair shake. I believe that I can contribute with my
work ethic and determination.
Thanks for your consideration.
