Report to Senate from the ?
Committee to Review University Admissions ?
the 1999-2000 Academic Year
The Committee to Review University Admissions (CRUA) reviews appeals from both
graduate and undergraduate applicants who feel aggrieved by the decision of the University
to apply a particular admission, readmission or transfer credit policy in his or her specific
case when special circumstances are present. An individual who wishes to appeal must
submit the appeal in writing, specifying the special circumstances to be considered. All
appellants have the option of appearing for an in-person hearing at a CRUA meeting or of
having a representative appear on their behalf. In the 1999-2000 year CRUA held seven
meetings: three to prior to the Fall 1999 semester, two prior to the Spring 2000 semester, and
two prior to the Summer 2000 semester.
A total of 87 appeals were heard by the Committee for the 1999-2000 academic year: 45 prior
to Fall 1999, 15 prior to Spring 2000, and 27 prior to Summer 2000. Of all appeals heard 20
were sustained and 67 were denied. On occasion CRUA may deny a student but give
conditions under which a student may be admitted to a future semester. All numbers
included in this report and the attached tables reflect decisions made at the hearings and do
not include subsequent admissions of students based on criteria set by CRUA.
The Committee did not receive any appeals from students for graduate programs in 1999-
2000.
There are two charts attached. The first reports by semester the number of appeals received
and the decisions made since Spring 1997. The second chart reports the registration status of
those appellants admitted by CRUA as of particular semesters as indicated.
