M.A. Program Change
The department has streamlined the MA program as a result of the External
Review data that MA completion times were unusually long, and at the
direction of SCUP. The revised program adopts the University requirements
for coursework for a thesis based M.A. These changes affect the following:

• Thesis (to provide a clearer indication of expectations of scale and
completion time)

Department of Philosophy
(i)
The department has recommended the removal of language in the Calendar
describing the co-operative program with UBC as the level of co-operation has
diminished.
(ii)
M.A. Program
a)
Addition of option: Specialized Thesis Option. The new Specialized Thesis
Option is intended for students who have a particular project and supervisor in
mind, and especially students with interdisciplinary interests.
b)
The program introduces area distribution requirements. These are Value
Theory, Metaphysics and Epistemology, History of Philosophy, and are
intended to round out a student's education.
Other editorial revisions.

(iii) Ph.D. Program
a)
Area distribution requirements are introduced in Value Theory, Metaphysics
and Epistemology, Logic/Formal Studies, History of Philosophy with exam
requirements in each area rather than comprehensives.
b)
Course requirements are reduced to 11 courses from 12 courses.
C) ?
Requirements for the "Thesis Proposal and Seminar" are changed to
"Dissertation Prospectus".
d) ?
"Thesis" is changed to "Dissertation", and Preliminary Dissertation
Examination added.
Other clarification and editorial revisions
(iv) Admission to graduate programs
Reference to University regulations is made more specific and only those features of
the department's standards which differ from or clarify the University standards are
mentioned. The importance of the Honours degree is downplayed as such degrees are
not universal.
