I am pleased to submit the Annual Report of the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies for the year 2000-2001.
The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies is the committee charged by Senate
with the following statement of purpose:
1. Taking into consideration the needfor coordination and development of
undergraduate programs within the University, SCUS shall:
a) review and make recommendations to Senate on curriculum changes of a
major nature and general matters affecting the curriculum;
b)
review and approve, where appropriate, all proposed new courses, course
deletions and program revisions of a minor nature. These changes shall be
reported in summary form to Senate.
2. To recommend to Senate grading, examination, standing and continuance policies.
3. To recommend to Senate policies on undergraduate admissions, re-admissions, and
credit transfer and where necessary, to provide general direction to the Registrar's
Office in the
interpretation
of such policies.
4. To consider and decide on policy
recommendations concerning undergraduate
course registration and course withdrawal procedures and on the administration
of
undergraduate and student records.
5. To consider and recommend to Senate policy recommendations from the Committee
to Review University Admissions.
6 To consider and recommend to Senate policy recommendations from the Diverse
Qualifications Adjudication Committee.
It is of interest to note that the last annual report from SCUS seems to have been
submitted sometime in 1987. This report covers the period May 1, 2000 to April 30,
2001. In the current reporting period, SCUS has held 9 meetings.

Substantive issues dealt with by SCUS in the past year were as follows.
Duplications
Courses taken at Simon Fraser University for which a student has already
received transfer credit from another institution will now count within the current
limit of five duplications.
Admission requirements
SCUS recommended to Senate revisions to the B.C. Secondary School courses
required for admission to SFU. SCUS received a significant amount of feedback
from educators about the proposed revisions prior and subsequent to Senate
approval.
Residency requirements
Proposed changes to Residency Requirements (transfer credit) were forwarded to
Senate for approval. Although subsequently approved by Senate, the
implementation of the changes has been postponed until the university has
selected and implemented a new Student Information Management System.
New regulations for Associate Degrees in Arts and Science
SCUS approved new regulations for the transfer credit assigned to Associate
Degrees holders in Arts and Sciences from BC or Yukon community colleges.
WE Proposal
SCUS approved a proposal revising the procedures associated with withdrawals
for extenuating circumstances. The revised procedures would allow WEs to be
dealt with more expeditiously and consistently, and are intended to lessen the
workload for Chairs and Directors. The proposal has been forward to the Vice
President Academic for consideration of funding related staff positions in Student
Services.
Exchange credit grade requirement
A proposed change to the grade requirement for SFU exchange students seeking
credit for courses taken at partner universities was recommended to Senate.
In addition, SCUS approved a long list of curriculum changes, and recommended a
number of major changes to Senate for approval.
SCUS will watch with interest the work of the ad hoc Committee to Review the
Undergraduate Curriculum, and plans to make a submission to that committee in the near
future.
