Paul Neufeld
Assistant Professor Reading and Learning Disabilities
Faculty of Education
I am a relatively new member of the SFU community and am interested in
participating in governance at the university level. I am hoping to become a
member of the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee because I
have a keen interest in undergraduate education and, more specifically, I am
interested in learning more about undergraduate awards at SFU.

Al-Natour, Sameh
For the last two years I have been a SAB member. Through my experience with SAB, I
learned a lot about university policy, and the rules governing the appeal process. This
year, I will be serving on Senate for a second term after a 1 year break. I am looking
forward to working with Senate and SAB members. I believe SAB is a good fit for me
because I have both the knowledge and the experience that qualify me to be an active
member of the board.
Atkins, Stella
I have been a member of the Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships, Awards and
Bursaries (SPCSAB) since 1999, and I also bring to the committee my experiences as
graduate chair in the School of Computing Science, from 1997-2000. As graduate chair
of SFU's second-largest research graduate degree program, I was actively involved in
student recruiting, one of the largest issues facing the SPCSAB. Great undergraduates
can become even greater graduate students, and scholarships and awards are major
incentives to attract students to SFU. The committee has to decide which kind of
scholarships are effective and adapt to current needs and demands. I also wish to
promote more women, particularly graduates, in the under-represented Sciences and
Applied Sciences. I wish to continue my service on this important committee.
Chan, Albert
Convocation Senator

Academic credentials from SFU:
Certificate in Liberal Arts (1998)
BA in Political Science (1999)
BBA in Accounting, Finance, and Policy Analysis (1999)
Experience in Senate committees:
Served on committees responsible for adjudication, awards, budget, library, and
planning.
Chang, Jack
It is an honor to be elected as the student senator and to represent the students of
Simon Fraser University. Service and representation are my first and foremost
priorities as the Senator. Criticisms and corrections are highly welcomed. I am looking
forward to working with you and giving my input on the academic governance of our
excellent University.
The committees to which I am requesting to sit on are the following:
1.
SCUP
2. CRUA
3.
SCUS
4. SCEMP
5. SCIA
6.
SCUTL

I am currently the Forum Representative for Business Administration Student

VP Finance of BASS. I am actively involved in other business clubs, such as the
Accounting Student Association, Student Marketing Association, and the Finance club.
SCUP appeals to me because I believe it will provide me with a better
understanding of our academic planning. Currently, we have many excellent programs
for students and I believe that significant improvements can still be made.
As a business student, I understand that the world of business is changing fast,
especially with the last decade where the Internet and technology is ever more so
challenging the conventional. Our programs need to change to adapt to the changing
world, especially the technical programs. I request to sit on SCUS.
I was one of the fortunate few to have been admitted into SFU Business directly
from high school. SFU brings in highly ambitious and intellectual students. However, I
believe many students, who have great potential, will be discouraged to come to SFU. I
believe that SFU can maintain its standards while welcoming many more students with
an open arm. I request to sit on SCEMP.
Under the current rankings on reputation from the Maclean's magazine, we are
not near the spot we take in the comprehensive ranking. I believe our presence in the
international arena should take on a stronger stance. I request to sit on SCIA.
I would like to sit on SCUTL because I have much interest in the ways we can
improve University teaching.
Craig, John
Currently Associate Professor in the Department of History, having joined the
department in 1994, I studied at Carleton University (BA MA) and at Cambridge
University (PhD, research fellow). I am presently Chair of Undergraduate Studies in the
Department of History and have published reasonably widely on early modern English
history. September will see the publication of "Reformation, Politics and Polemics", a
monograph in the St Andrews Studies in Reformation History series.
I have served as a faculty member on CRUA from September 2001 and have,
found the task of applying the university's policies on admissions to the varied cases
that come before the committee to be both stimulating and important. I would be glad
of the continued opportunity to serve in this capacity.
Dempster, Peter
I would like to submit my application for appointment to the Senate Committee
on Disciplinary Appeals (SCODA) and the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies (SCUS). I am currently a fourth year Political Science student with interests in
Law and International Studies. I have sat on various departmental committees
including the appointments committee and the general departmental committee.
I am keenly interested in SCODA for several reasons. I believe the maintenance
of academic honesty and conduct in students is a basic tenant of academic freedom,
originality and fairness.
I
am further interested in the work of this committee as it
pertains directly to my intended futirre studies in Law. Furthermore, I believe I have a
fair grasp on the codes of conduct and academic honesty that are in place at the
university, an asset that would make me a valuable committee member. Also, I am the
student designate to the departmental ad hoc committee on discipline appeals.
I believe I will be a valuable committee member for SCUS for several reasons. As
part of the external review, I was intensely involved in the review of undergraduate
curriculum through my student union. Moreover I am acutely interested in the

. development of the undergraduate curriculum, and believe that my experiences over
the past four years as an undergraduate student would be valuable for development of
the undergraduate program. Additionally I have been involved in the recent external
review of our department.
Dunsterville, Valerie
I have a real interest in the Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships, Awards
and Bursaries (SPCSAB) and would very much like to continue serving on it.
I believe that the longer service and experience on this committee provides for
continuity and a knowledge base that will be useful in the decision making expected of
this committee."
Fernandez, Gina
My name is Gina Fernandez and I am a third year student at Simon Fraser
University. I would like to apply to be on senate committees for the upcoming year. In
the past few years, I have been a member of the Environmental Science Student Union,
and Residence Association at SFU. In addition, I have been involved in the Punjabi
Students Association and Indo-Canadian Association at SFU. I have, also volunteered
with various organizations including an extended health care residence, a high school
group of mentally and physically challenged students, a peer counselling team, the
Library Youth Council, the City of Richmond Youth Council, and have been a coach
with an athletics team. Currently, I am employed by the Vancouver International
Airport, in the Customer Service Department. I believe the aforementioned experiences
• have allowed me to become proficient in the areas of conflict resolution, decision-
making, time management and communication. I also possess the ability to learn
quickly, strong interpersonal skills, an open mind, and most importantly, enthusiasm! I
believe these characteristics qualify me as a candidate for the positions.
I am interested in being a member of the
Senate Library Committee and Library
Penalties Appeal Committee
because I was previously employed by the Richmond
Public Library and W.A.C. Bennett
.
Library, and have served on a Library Council in the
past. Consequently, I am knowledgeable about the penalties and processes of the
library and would enjoy the chance to be involved with the Library again.
Throughout my time at SFU, I have become familiar with the issues affecting
students, including disciplinary concerns, and would like to learn more about the
subjects. Therefore, I would like to be a part of the
Senate Appeals Board
and
Senate
Committee on Disciplinary Appeals. I
understand that this position would involve
examining the facts of a situation and challenge me to find solutions to satisfy students.
I welcome this opportunity to be part of a committee that sets precedents for students in
the future years and must carefully consider the outcome of its decisions.
It was my intention to apply for exchange next year, however, due to my degree
requirements, I am unable to go overseas. It is for this reason that I am applying to be
on the
International Student Exchange Committee.
I
would like to be involved in part
with this program. I was previously employed overseas and enjoyed the experience. I
have spoken with advisors in charge of the exchange program and this has familiarized
me with the procedures concerning admissions, providing me with the information
necessary for this position.
?
?
Lastly, it is my desire to be on the
Committee to Review University Admissions.
Though I have been at SFU for three years, I also attended Coquitlam College and

accordingly, had to go through the lengthy admission process. This has made me
aware of the procedures concerning admissions and has provided me with background
knowledge. I am interested in further familiarizing myself in this area.
Gerwel, Wojtek
I am a fourth year student from Poland majoring in economics and political science,
with unconstrained interest in social science as a whole. I am applying for the following
committees:
SCODA - Senate Committee on Disciplinary Appeals
SCUP - Senate Committee on University Priorities
CRUA - Committee to Review University Admissions
SCUS - Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
ISEC - International Student Exchange Committee
Through my potential participation in the above committees I would like to be
able to discover new dimensions of what I now perceive the role of university education
to be. I hope that the thus acquired knowledge can prove useful to me in a prospective
setting of making a positive change in the structure of Polish educational institutions.
However, I believe that my contribution to those committees would not be restricted to
my drawing of personal benefits from them, but, more importantly, would be
conductive to the enhancement of their functioning. Although I admit that my academic
experience is very limited, I think that in a way it is also relatively unique, in that it has
evolved in at least three distinct educational systems: of Canada, France and Poland. I
think that I could draw on this experience in all of the aforementioned committees, and
particularly in SCUP and SCUS, where, I feel, it is especially important to be receptive
of acquiring an always-broader perspective on issues under investigation.
I am particularly interested in working for ISEC. In my opinion, SFU should
strive to allow as many of its students (and, in fact, faculty) as possible to benefit from
multiple forms of exchange. With this in mind, I support the International Office's
current policy, of encouraging students to "go away" and enhancing their spectrum of
opportunities. Through the ISEC, I would like to work towards establishing the
University's wholehearted support of this improvement and thus an even more
energetic expansion of the program.
Gill, Alison
I am writing to indicate my willingness to stand for Vice-chair of Senate. I have acted as
Chair in various capacities within the university system, notably as Chair of the
Department of Geography since 1997 and of various departmental committees prior to
that. I also serve as Chair of the Faculty of Arts Equity Committee. Outside the
University I have this year served as Chair of a SSHRC Research Grants Adjudication
Committee. These appointments have given me the opportunity to develop my skills as
a Chair in a variety of contexts.
Goel, Amit
I, Amit Kumar Goel, an international student at Simon Fraser University (SFU)
come from India. Prior to joining SFU, I graduated from Pantnagar University, India
with B.Sc. (Fisheries science) and later on completed my masters degree (Aquaculture)
in Asian Institute of Technology (AlT), Bangkok, Thailand. During my study period at
AlT, I had the privilege of being the General Secretary for the Student Union.
?

. Furthermore, including the Student Relations Committee of the Board of Trustees of
AlT, I had also represented the graduate students at various forums, and thus could
extend my services to student community. Also, during my study at AlT, I had the
privilege to spend four months in University College Cork, Cork, Ireland through the
Post-graduate technological Studies (PTS) programme of the European Union. The PTS
Program was designed to reinforce Europe-Asia links particularly in human resource
development and planning. This also provided an excellent opportunity to have a close
view on socio-cultural aspect of Irish/Western life style.
These experiences from different countries and universities have enriched me in
many ways and I would like to further these abilities and improve my leadership skills
that I have engrossed over the years. I wish to utilise these skills to be put into the
appropriate use. Hence, I would like to present myself as a candidate for the senate
committees.
ISEC
The most international students who come from the developing countries need financial
support by SFU. They come here in totally different socio-economic environment and
face different challenges in day-to-day life.
Likewise, when Canadian students go abroad for study or for internship need great
support. They require help on social and cultural frontage, health issues etc. Most of
the times, support doesn't come in time, and so the late executions are a chronic
problem.
Representing views and putting forward the issues of student could help to make their
life smoother.
SPCSAB
As gathered, the number of students is rising every semester and the proportionate
contribution to scholarships and bursaries is declining at Simon Fraser University. In a
report issued by SPCSAB stated "students at all academic levels require additional
financial support through bursaries, and they, therefore, fill an essential need for
students." However, there is no mention in SPCSAB reports of how this increase in
need will be met. Thus, it is of immense importance to deal with issues related to
funding for graduate students, who largely, if not exclusively, depend on the financial
support from the university.
Grimmett, Peter
Professor of Education and Director of the Institute for Studies in Teacher
Education at Simon Fraser University.
Before joining SFU, I was Director of the Centre for the Study of Teacher
Education at UBC. arch interests focus on how practitioners derive the requisite
professional knowledge and skills to do their work competently. I study how teachers
are affected by processes like reflection and action research, etc., and by the socio-
political-cultural contexts in which they do their work.
I have served as President of the Canadian Association for Teacher Education
and currently serve as the Associate Editor of two journals,
The Journal of Curriculum and

(published by Carfax in the UK). I also served on the Social Sciences and

conferences in Kansas City, MO., Lahti, Finland, Tel Aviv, Israel, Ottawa, Montreal, and
Chicago, IL. In May 2000, I received an honorary doctorate from the University of
Tampere, Finland, in recognition of my outstanding merits as a researcher and educator
in the areas of professional development and teacher education. In total, I have
published 35 refereed journal articles, written seven books and 34 chapters in books,
and also gained more than half a million dollars in research funding (mainly from
SSHRC) and produced two professional videos. In the last two years I have undertaken
major work for the province of British Columbia, studying patterns of teacher supply
and demand, developing policy to address a possible shortage of educators. As recently
as May 22, 2001 in Quebec City, I addressed a policy forum of the Council of Ministers
of Education focusing on the future of teacher education in Canada.
I have been a member of Senate for one year. During that time, I have served on
the Senate Committee for University Priorities (SCUP), dealing with budgetary matters,
academic unit reviews, and academic strategic planning. I also served on the Vice
President, Academic search committee in 1999-2000 and have been the chair of the
Education Faculty Tenure Committee for five years.
Thus, I bring considerable experience to the work of SPCSAB (closely connected.
to the budgetary work of SCUP), that of setting policy that relates to student
scholarships, bursaries, and awards at SFU. I see policy as a framework in which we
embed the values of our university in ways that provide for coherence and continuity
while permitting the kind of flexible arrangements that enable institutional
responsiveness to the needs of students in a changing world.
Hanlan, Lee
Senior Lecturer
Department of Chemistry
I have been a member of SAB (as a Faculty Alternate) since September 1996, for
the past year acting as Vice-Chair, and would like to continue for another term. I believe
that the Senate Appeals Board has an important function in providing students an
avenue to appeal decisions, which they may consider to be unfair, that have been made
by Faculty, Departments or other administrative group. I've enjoyed working with the
committee in the past and would continue to work with the members to ensure that
each student's case is looked at with fairness and within a consistent set of criteria.
Jensen, Britta
I have been a student at SFU since the fall of 1997 when I started my university
career in pursuit of a BA. In my first two years I took courses in anthropology, english,
political science, and history among others and declared an extended minor in
Archaeology. However, when I took my first earth sciences course I knew that I had
found what I was looking for and declared it as my major. After changing my degree to
a B.Sc. and thus adding several years onto my degree, I decided to make the best of my
extended time here and proceeded to join SPANC (The Society of Post-Apocalyptic
Neo-Catastrophists), the Earth Sciences Student Union. The following year I was
elected in as the department representative to the SFSS Forum. During this year I
grew to feel that I had a lot to offer the Society and the students it serves, that in my
position on forum I couldn't fully realise. So I decided to run for President, which I
achieved, starting my term in office May 1st of this year. ?

. 1 ran for Senate because I felt that it was important for students to have a
representative that is well versed in the issues facing them and our public institution as
a whole, while not hesitating to speak up. I believe that this committee is one of the
most fundamental of the Senate, it,s terms of reference cover some of the most
important dealings of the university, ones which can greatly effect the student body of
SFU. This is why the student representative on this committee must be determined to
do their best, which is what I intend. To be a member of this committee will also be of
great benefit to myself as President of the SFSS since it will help in getting a better grasp
of how the university works and what its abilities and limitations are as a public
institution. With this knowledge I will be able to better help other students in
understanding why the university works the way it does and how to work with the
university in improving what we have.
Khare, Nitin
This is to formally nominate myself as a regular for:
1.
Senate Committee on Disciplinary Appeals
2.
Senate Appeals Board.
- 3. Committee to Review University Admissions
I am a Business Administration Student doing a double concentration in
Accounting and Management Information Systems. I am in my 4th year. I am also
enrolled in the Chartered Accounting co-op program with KPMG. I have served on the
. Dean Search Committee for the Faculty of Business, as President of the Association of
Collegiate Entrpreneurs, and am currently involved in the Student Host Volunteer
Program with Business and Career Services Center. My past work experience includes
working at KPMG for co-op and as a Resident Assistant in SFU Residences. Currently I
am at school full time.
I am interested in serving on these committees because I would like to expand
my involvement in the University to a broader level. I have served in various capacities
associated with the Faculty Of Business. I feel experiences such as serving on the Dean
Search Committee has allowed me to acquire the skills necessary to participate
effectively in a team atmosphere. In addition, my experience as a Resident Assistant
has taught me problem solving and problem analysis skills which would help in
dealing with committee issues. Finally, my work experience as an auditor at KPMG has
provided me with analytical skills useful for decision making. I would like to build on
these individual experiences by serving for the senate at SFU. These committees are of
interest to me and I would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about them.
Thank you for you consideration.
Pabel, Hilmar
I am seeking election to the following Senate Committees: SPCSAB, SUAAC,
SAB.
My commitment to students at SFU is, as it should be, solidly rooted in teaching.
Of course, the process of education and the work of the university goes on outside as
well as inside the classroom. In 2000-2001, I enjoyed working on the SAB, making sure
that students' requests for special consideration received a fair hearing. I would like to

continue my association with the SAB and expand my service to the university and to
students by serving on the SPCSAB and the SUACC.
Faculty should do more than teach. They should also be involved in rewarding
and promoting talent. It has been my pleasure to recommend students that I have
taught in my History courses for essay prizes, scholarships, and other awards. I would
now welcome the opportunity of being involved with the application of policies and
procedures that help recognize the achievements of SFU students in all disciplines of
higher learning.
Peters, Joseph
Professor and Associate Director
School of Computing Science, Simon Fraser University.
I am currently a member of Senate, SCUP, and the Senate Committee to Review
and Develop Undergraduate Curricula. I have just finished a two year term as a
member of SCODA and I served as chair of SCODA during the second year. I recently
chaired the Senate Committee to Revise Student Conduct Policies. I have also served on
the University Board on Student Discipline and as chair of the departmental discipline
appeals committee in Computing Science. I would like to continue my involvement
with the implementation of the new Student Conduct Policies by serving on SCODA for
another term.
Prior, Dorian
I would like to let my name stand for election to the Diverse Qualifications
Adjudication Committee. I first became involved with the committee in January of 2001
when a friend of mine on the committee told me about it, and recommended that I put
my name forward for election. I found the process to be quite rewarding because of the
fact that the committee's mandate is to give those people who would otherwise not be
able to attend SFU the chance to prove themselves and the ability to meet their goals.
This ability to positively affect the lives of other people is one of the most uplifting
experiences that I have had at SFU.
I would sincerely like to continue on as a member of the DQA Committee so that
I can continue to contribute to the Simon Fraser community. Thank you,
Steinbach, Chris
I am currently seeking the student seats on SAB, SCODA, and SLC.
I am interested in helping to ensure that appeals are heard fairly and that
everyone receives due process. I am also interested in working to maintain the best
library that we can, and helping to work through the changes that we are facing in the
library, particularly with a robotic library system.
I have an understanding of Senate and Senate committees obtained from personal
experience which will help me to serve as best I can. I served as a member of Senate for
two years, and in that time I served on several committees including: SCAR, SCUH,
CRUA, SCODA and SNC.
I also have more experience with deliberaticve bodies due to the year I served as
the Computer Science Forum Representative to the Simon Fraser Student Society.
I hope to continue my service to SFU and I hope that you will vote for me for the
committees that I am running for.

Sugarman, Jeff
Assistant Professor of Education
Statement for SPCSAB
My scholarly work is in the theory and philosophy of applied psychology. I am
interested in the future of our university as a community of scholars, and in the
development of policies that will help us attract the most promising and capable
students. I also believe it important to have policies that attempt to ensure that awards
are adjudicated equitably and that the interests of all faculties are fairly represented. I
am now in the third year of my appointment to the Faculty of Education, and would
welcome the opportunity to learn more about, and participate in, policy decisions at the
university level.
Tansey, Caralyn
Position Sought:
Student Senator Representative to the Senate Nominating Committee (SNC)
Statement:
I am writing this to express my interest in becoming a Student Senator
Representative to the Senate Nominating Committee (SNC). I am currently the
Treasurer of the Simon Fraser Student Society. As an elected representative of the
student population here at SFU, I realize the importance of having strong, involved and
highly committed persons to advocate on behalf of students for students, interests. I
have been involved in the Student Society over the last year, sitting on the Board of
?
• ?
Directors (Forum) as the department representative for the Humanities Student Union
as well as sitting on several committees dedicated to the effective running of the
• Student Society. My volunteer work at the Simon Fraser Student Society has allowed
me to interact with thousands of SFU students both on and off campus and I feel that I
have a clear vision of many of the goals and struggles that students are engaged in
during their studies.
The reason why I would like to sit on the Senate Nominating Committee is very
• simple; to ensure that student voices are heard on all Senate Committees and that the
concerns of students are not over-looked. It is of the utmost importance that the
students who are elected into Senate Committees are responsible, diligent, and
informed as well as concerned for and involved with the needs of students. It is
essential that those who represent student voices on Senate and Senate Committees are
committed to transforming student needs into concrete action. I believe that my
willingness to listen to the concerns of all students and my dedication to the student
movement will allow me to be an effective Student Senator and a valued asset to the
Senate Nominating Committee.
Tucker, Sean
Hi. My name is Sean Tucker. I am running in this election as an incumbent for
the Diverse Qualifications Admissions Committee. Presently I am in my final year of
my undergraduate degree with majors in Business Administration and History.
I was admitted to SFU via university transfer in 99-2. When I applied to SFU my
CGPA was low, so I took advantage of the diverse qualification category. It turned out

that my marks were high enough to get me into SFU; hence I was not considered as a
DQ applicant. This experience and my one-year of service on the committee have made

me familiar with this system and sensitive to potential students who rely on it as a
means of being admitted to SFU. Given this, my good sense of judgment, and my desire
to volunteer my time to SFU, I hope you will support my nomination.
Van Aalst, Jan
Following are statements of interest for three senate committees. I should point out that
I am already a member of the Senate Library Committee (SLC), finishing in 2002.
Senate Nominating Committee
Since Rina Zazkis will complete her term on this committee, a senator from the Faculty
of Education on the committee is desirable to ensure that this faculty is adequately
represented on the senate when vacancies become available. I do not have prior
experience in this kind of work, but welcome it as an opportunity to get to know more
members of my faculty (and in the university).
Senate Committee on University Honours
Celebrating our successes and strengths is vital to the life of the university, and I can
hardly imagine service to the university that would be more gratifying, although I
know the deliberations are often difficult. As a graduate student at the University of
Toronto, I served twice on award committees to evaluate applications to competitive
research assistanceships, and think that this preparation will be useful to the work of
the senate committee.
Senate Committee on Continuing Studies
I was a physics instructor in the continuing education department at Ryerson
Polytechnic University for five years, so a significant part of my career so far has been in
continuing studies; I also have taken (credit) courses via continuing education.
Education faculty (like others) recognize the importance of lifelong learning, so I see
continuing studies as an area within the university to which I should apply myself.
Warren, Joel
My name is Joel Warren and I am one of the new Senator elects. I am looking
forward to working with Senate to continue building upon our past successes and
towards creating new and innovative initiatives. The committees which I am
nominated to are: Senate Committee on University Priorities, Senate Committee on
Undergraduate Studies, and Senate Appeals Board.
Presently I am working towards a joint major in Economics and the
Environmental Specialty of Geography, and I am one course away from attaining my
Liberal Arts Certificate. I have been a student at SFU, mostly since 1996. Last summer I
chose my academic path and I have been a full-time student since. Upon my return, I
decided to become an active member in the SFU community. Up until this semester, I
have been an active member of the SFPIRG Collective. I am the new University
Relations Officer for the SFSS. I have had experience with the future plans of this
campus as a member of the Burnaby Mountain Development Working Group, and, as
University Relations Officer, I am now the annual Chair of this Group.
I have built good, solid working relations with people from a diverse cross-
section of our community, encompassing most academic disciplines at both the
undergraduate and graduate levels. Many of them would attest to the valuable ideas
and commitments I bring to discussions regarding the future prospects and potentials
of this University. SFU has been rated First among Comprehensive Universities by

MacLean's Magazine numerous times. The continuity of this trend is a goal to which I
am firmly committed.
I believe there are a plethora of opportunities to include innovative and
free academic theory with hands-on interdisciplinary practise thanks to the upcoming
community development. Urban planning, environmental studies, technology, and
businesses might provide various educational and field experience for students. We
may help pioneer sustainable development and environmental technologies such as
solar power, fuel cells and natural sewage treatment facilities. We have the opportunity
to realise what is taught through our Community Economic Development Program.
New spaces may be created for various lecture series, creating new project possibilities
for education studies; new theatre space may provide new opportunities for the fine
arts. I feel that my long-term visions make me a viable candidate for SCUP, and SCUS.
I hold strong principles regarding fairness of process and I thus feel myself to be an
adequate candidate for the Senate Appeals Committee. Thank you for your
consideration of my nomination to these committees.
