In accordance with Item 5 of the Terms of Reference for the Senate Committee on

University Priorities:

"5. To be responsible for the operation of the system of external review of

academic units set out in the Senate Guidelines for External Reviews."

I am writing to advise Senate that I have initiated four external reviews for the

2001/02 academic year. The Senate Committee on University Priorities received this

information at its May 16, 2001 meeting as document SCUP 01-50 (attached).

For the 2001/02 Academic Year

For your information, in accordance with the Senate Guidelines for External

Reviews for Academic Units, I have initiated external reviews for each of the

following units for the 2001/02 academic year:

Criminology

History

Philosophy

Women's Studies

M P M

I have agreed to postpone the external review for the Department of Economics

until Fall 2002 to facilitate the transition between Chairs.

I have also agreed to postpone the external review for the Canadian Studies

program. Over the course of the next. few months I will be reconsidering the value

of the external review process for this unit at this time.
