Subject: Terms of Reference Changes ?
Date: March 13, 2001
for Athletic Awards
Below are recommendations for change to the terms of reference for the University funded Simon Fraser
University Athletic Scholarships and the Athletic Entrance Awards for consideration by the SPCSAB.
These changes have the support of the Director, Recreational Services and Athletics, Wilf Wedmann. The
new terms of reference reflect the way in which Recreational Services and Athletics have preferred to
nominate recipients in the past, give the department additional flexibility in the distribution of the awards
and allow the University to more easily comply with CIAU regulations.
Simon Fraser University Athletic Scholarships
Current Terms of Reference:
Two scholarships valued at $1,000 each (disbursed in two $500 installments) are available to
students who demonstrate outstanding and sustained athletic performance. The students must be
registered in 9 credit hours and have a minimum CGPA of 3.50 based on completion of 60 credit

hours at Simon Fraser University. Consideration will also be given to a student who: is an
outstanding member of an intercollegiate team, exemplifies leadership qualities, and contributes to
the enhancement of the athletic specialty of involvement.
The second disbursement of the scholarship will be subject to a student maintaining a 3.50 CGPA
and registration in 9 credit hours.
Recommended Change:
The scholarships should be changed to two awards valued at $1,000 each given in one semester rather than
two renewable awards given in two $500 disbursements. This would avoid students losing a second
disbursement due to insufficient credit hours or changes in grade point average and would allow
Recreational Services and Athletics to better plan and distribute the funding among eligible students.
Proposed New Terms:
Two scholarships valued at $1,000 each are available to students who demonstrate outstanding and
sustained athletic performance on an intercollegiate team. Students must be registered in 9 credit
hours and have a minimum CGPA of 3.50 based on completion of 60 credit hours at Simon Fraser
University. Consideration will also be given to exemplary leadership and contributions to the
enhancement of the athletic specialty in which the student is involved.

Athletic Entrance Awards
Current Terms of Reference:
Two awards valued at $2,000 each (disbursed in two $1,000 installments) are available to students
on the basis of demonstrated leadership along with a good academic standing in the school
program. Students must maintain a 2.00 CGPA and maintain 9 credits hours during tenure of the
award.
Recommended Change:
The awards should be changed to four awards valued at $1,000 each given in one semester rather than two
renewable awards given in $1,000 disbursements. This would avoid students loosing a second
disbursement due to insufficient credit hours, allow better flexibility and distribution of awards among
eligible students, and improve Recreational Services and Athletics ability to ensure that students' awards
remained within CIAU maximums.
Proposed New Terms:
Four awards valued at $1,000 each are available to students on the basis of demonstrated leadership
in an intercollegiate sport. Students must have a 2.00 CGPA and be registered in 9 credit hours
during the tenure of the award.
