Subject: BC Ministry of Education course: Calculus 12
Recommendation For the Acceptance of Calculus 12
1.
On the basis of the detailed description of this course provided by
the BC Ministr y
of Education, one can say that this course in both
content and expectations is equivalent to SFUs MATH 151 and UBCs
MATH 100. It is therefore recommended that it he accepted as a course
for universit y
entrance.
2. Because of the variabilit
y of school assessments and the lack of a
provincial exam it is recommended that no transfer credit be awarded
for Calculus 12. Students passing the UBC-UNBC-SFU-UVic Calculus
Challenge Exam ma
y
receive credit and a grade for MATH 151 if they
choose to do so --- this would continue the practice of the past two
years. Exemption from MATH 151 as a program requirement will not
?
normally be granted on the basis of the completion of Calculus 12
unless the student has taken. and achieved a satisfactory grade in.
the Calculus Challenge Exam.
3.
For the revised admissions policy being implemented in 2002, Calculus
12 should he placed in list
3.

Note: The department of mathematics at UBC has for some years been
promoting the Calculus Challenge Exam as an alternative to various
advanced placement examinations in mathematics. We have been
cooperating with them and host the examination every other year.

Year 2002 admission requirements for BC grade 12s
Highlights of changes
• one course (4 credits) added to course requirements
• allows a wider range of courses, especially fine and performing arts and social studies
• allows Programme Cadre grads to qualify without also taking English 12
• includes a computer/information technology course, where previously (except for AP or IB) none was accepted&emdash;almost all major
universities recognize/encourage students to take high school computer science
• allows a choice between the 'principles and 'applied' streams in mathematics
• allows forests and lB environmental systems as sciences (primarily for non-science students)
These new admission requirements are also available in pdf format. (PDF: 32KB / 2 pages)
2001 grads
• These course requirements are effective for admission to our Spring semester 2002.
• Anyone who graduated in 2001 or earlier will be under the former requirements.
AP and lB
Certain courses have Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) near-equivalents which are acceptable - a chart is available from
SFU Admissions.
French
Many Grade 11 and 12 courses are taught in French in addition to English,
