Dear Dr. Clayman:
As the founding and current Directors of the SFU-UBC Centre for the Study of
Government and Business, we wish to inform you of certain important developments related to
the CSGB.
Since 1996, the CSGB has been supporting research and teaching initiatives in the area of
government and business through a variety of means, including seminars and conferences, a
working paper series, the UBC Election Stock Market, public policy luncheons and by hosting
distinguished visitors. The Centre has also been an important mechanism in contributing to
contact between scholars at both universities interested in business and government. Michael
Phelps, the former CEO of Westcoast Energy, has now made a large financial gift to UBC to
fund research and teaching in the area of government and business. His generosity will go a long.
way toward making Vancouver a centre of excellence in the field.
To take advantage of this gift, we believe it makes sense to fold the current CSGB into a
new centre, which is yet to be named. While the new entity will reside at UBC, it is our
intention to continue to work together on the kinds of projects we have shared over these past six
years. And we expect to do even more with the additional financial resources that have become
available. We also expect that academics at SFU who have been associated with the SFU-UBC
CSGB will continue to be members of the new centre.
