Candidate Information - Elections at Senate
S.M. 4 November
2002
Muis, Krista
I, Krista Muis, am interested in the position of student representative for the Research
Ethics Board Committee (REB). Since I have been a PhD student here at SFU, I have
participated in a variety of committees in order to gain valuable knowledge and insight
with regards to various aspects of a university. Serving on this committee will only
enrich my experience here as a PhD student, and further prepare me for my future
career. After I have completed my PhD, I plan to obtain a position at a university as an
assistant professor. I believe that participating on a number of committees will only
benefit me by preparing me to serve effectively and efficiently on committees in the
future.
I am particularly interested in being student representative for the Research Ethics
Board Committee. I have always had a keen interest in conducting research, the various
research methodologies, and the ethical considerations one needs to be aware of when
conducting research. I have taken a variety of research methods courses and courses
specifically focusing on ethical considerations when conducting research (readings
included "Beyond regulations: Ethics in human subjects research" King, N., Henderson,
C, & Stein, J, [Eds],
1999;
"Ethical principles in the conduct of research with human
participants" APA,
1982). I
have also had the opportunity to teach an undergraduate
research methods course (Educ
222)
and a graduate research methods course (Educ
864),
both of which had one section devoted to ethical considerations. I believe that my
interest and knowledge in research and ethics in conducting research will be an asset to
the REB. I also believe that I will benefit from being a student member as I will gain
valuable information as to the underlying processes that occur for ethics review. For
me, this is a perfect opportunity to experience "theory into practice".
Please consider me for the position of student representative on the REB. I look forward
to hearing from you.

Pourvali, Reza
Dear SFU Senate members,
I am a third year Molecular Biology & Biochemistry (Honours) student, with
an A+ GPA. Throughout the years of my university education, I have strived
for academic excellence as well as dedicated service to my university and
community. I am the Vice-President of our departmental (MBB) Student Union.
I helped with establishing the MBB Student Union, and helped organize many
events: seminars/forums on bioethics and GMF, Christmas Food Drive to help
the homeless, and more. I also helped establish the MBB Student Union
Bursary to help students with financial need. In the past, I have been the
Student Representative in our Departmental Curriculum Committee (DUCC). In
addition I am currently a member of 3 SFU Senate committees: Senate
Nominating Committee, Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee
(SUAAC), and Senate Policy Committee on Scholarship, Awards, and Bursaries
(SPCSAB). Being a member of SFU Senate committees was a wonderful
experience: I could further improve my volunteer and leadership skills, and
meanwhile give back to the university in a new and effective way. I am very
much willing to extend my service to the university by participating in yet
more Senate committees. In addition to service to university, I volunteer at
Burnaby Hospital and Feliburn Care Centre. Recently, I won the 2002 SFU
Alumni Association Outstanding Student Leadership Award (one of SFU's major
leadership awards).
My interest to serve the Research Ethics Board stems from the fact that I am
a scientist. Obviously, ethics is of tremendous importance in scientific
research. As I mentioned before, I have helped organize a series of
seminars and forums on bioethics, Genetically Modified Foods and more. I
have learned much from those seminars, and would like to help with
regulation of research through the Research Ethics Board. In addition, I
have worked in many SFU research labs as a Research Assistant; I have worked
at a biotechnology company as well. Like many other students, I spend a lot
of time in the SFU library and use the library resources (textbooks,
journals, etc.) regularly. Library is indeed of great importance to every
student. I am willing to get involved in SLC/LPAC, and help make our
library and its services even better. Finally, since undergraduate
admissions and awards policy & adjudication are similar in many aspects, I
would like to get involved in CRUA. I believe this is very helpful since I
am currently a member of SUAAC/SPCSAB.
Thank you for giving this Election Statement your consideration.
