. PROPOSAL FOR THE CREATION OF A CERTIFICATE IN LABOUR STUDIES AND FURTHER
DEVELOPMENT OF THE LABOUR STUDIES MINOR
The Labour Studies Certificate
The Certificate is proposed by the Director of the Centre for Labour Studies, recently established in the
Department of History. It is designed to appeal generally to students with an interest in labour studies,
but especially to non-traditional students who have positions in trade unions, industrial relations, and
related fields and wish to further their education in this area.
Labour Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines work, work culture, organizations, and issues
from social, cultural, historical, political, and economic perspectives. The Labour Studies certificate
draws upon the departments of history, political science, sociology/anthropology, women's studies,
economics, communications, geography, and philosophy to provide students with a range of skills and
a broad base of knowledge that will deepen their understand of labour and labour issues in the
contemporary workplace.
Other provinces have similar programs, but this certificate will be the only academic, university
• program of its kind in BC. It will allow eligible students from Capilano College's labour studies
program to continue their education at university and will provide opportunities for people to return to
university in a program designed to meet their needs.
The Certificate will consist of 24 credits; LBST 101-3 and LBST 301-3 are required with the
additional 18 credits are to be selected from the list of courses on the following page.
