Re: Convocation Senator, statement of interest
Dear Valerie,
Thank you for your letter of May 22 regarding the position available as
Convocation Senator. I have reviewed the information on the SFU Senate web
site and would be interested in letting my name stand for a position on Senate.
I have a strong belief in the value of education and have supported SFU for many
years, as well as U of T where I received my engineering education. As you are
aware, I spent five years on the Board of the Alumni Association, serving as
treasurer and president.
Community service is also an area that I support, having been a member of the
Rotary Club of Burnaby for the past eleven years. In addition to the many
community projects the club supports, we also provide scholarships to high
school graduates from each of the Burnaby high schools and to SFU and BCIT.
If there is any additional information you require, please let me know.
Thank you for your consideration.
Regards,
Peter K. Beynon

Since moving to British Columbia from Ontario in
1975, I
have been associated with SFU in several ways.
First, I experienced a very welcoming and non-bureaucratic stance when I returned to university to take
additional courses. In the
'80s, I
completed a masters' degree in the Faculty of Education. I worked for
the Faculty of Education
1987 - 1994
as
a
faculty associate, sessional instructor and coordinator in the
Professional Development Program (PDP). Since then, I have been a regular contributor to the
Scholarship Fund. Last month, I was accepted into a PhD program in Education, to start in September.
For the last
25
years, I have had strong ties to SFU in a variety of roles. My administrative experience
both at SFU and, during the last
8
years, in the public school system, have developed my interest in the
governance and administration of the university. I would be delighted to have an opportunity to contribute
to the university as a member of Senate.

Re: Senate Election
This letter is to confirm that I am interested in putting my name forward to
be elected to the SI
T
U Senate.
Having examined the Senate web pages I feel that I could make a positive
contribution to the university in this position. I bring experience in a number of
areas that may be of value to the Senate. As a graduate of the university I am
already familiar with the
institution
and its reputation. Fifteen years at Douglas
College, a community college, gives me extensive experience with students who
transfer to SFU. The student feedback is positive and many have gone on to have
successful careers as a direct result of completing their degree(s) at SFU. As a
faculty member I have served on many College wide committees. This adds to the
5 ?
knowledge and experience that I would bring to Senate.
I am dedicated to the best interests of SI
T
U and students. I see the university
as part of a larger community in the role that it plays in education. It is that role as
a member of the larger community that is important in a global world. I am
committed and hardworking and do not mind challenges.
The following is a brief biographical
statement:
Over time I have participated on a number of boards and committees. I was
a member of the Board of Directors on the Burnaby Arts Council; Simon Fraser
Alumni Board and a member of the editorial committee for the Simon Fraser
Alumni Journal; past president of the International Club at Simon Fraser; member
of the organizing committee of the Douglas College Alumni Association and assisted
in the establishment of a Gender Studies program at the College.
As Chair of Political Science for six years at Douglas College, my duties
included supervision of faculty, curriculum development, hiring, implementing
college policy and various functions.
Invited to be on the Dean's governance committee for the re-structuring of
the Social Sciences Department.
9

Also I have been involved in setting up our China program for adult learners
from the government of China. This is a current program in its third year of a five
year program.
Established an International Model United Nations for students. As faculty
advisor for this group many skills are needed for success. Leadership, team work,
managing volunteers, community liaison (example: the Ismaili Community
participation), special guest speakers (ambassadors, government officials both
provincial and federal), international contacts (Chinese Embassy in Ottawa and the
Egyptian cultural center in Montreal), sponsors for the project (the Grizzlies, B.C.
Hydo, Telus, Alcan and many more).
As a direct result of the Model United Nations conference at Douglas College
we have been able to make four trips to Cairo, Egypt. Our students have competed
successfully in the Egyptian MUN held at the American University in Cairo. A
number of our resolutions have been sent on the United Nations in New York.
I am committed to student success. The Senate would provide me with the
opportunity to serve SFU and the community. I feel that my community College
experience combined with extensive travel would be an asset to the Senate.
Thank you for this opportunity.
Yours Sincerely.

Dear Convocation Senators:
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to run for Senate. It was a nice surprise to
receive your call, and I look forward to learning your decision. As requested, I have
included a short biography and a statement of interest.
Biography
I joined Contemporary Communications in April 2002 as a public relations account
executive, specializing in community and media relations, writing and editing,
sponsorships and event management.
My diverse communications background encompasses television broadcasting,
advertising, publishing and social marketing campaigns. During my career, I have
successfully applied my community and media relations expertise to gain public support
for initiatives ranging from technology to environment.
Prior to joining Contemporary Communications, I was responsible for science and
technology events and publishing activities at the Science Council of BC. I was
instrumental in organizing the Science Council's annual science and technology awards
S ?
dinner for more than 700 guests, and for producing a new on-line monthly newsletter for
the science and technology community.
I also developed and implemented community and media relation programs for the
Greater Vancouver Regional District to educate residents about choices for preserving
and improving the region. I developed social marketing campaigns to encourage business
recycling and water conservation; organized and promoted the annual Farm Open House
Day event to demonstrate the importance of agriculture in Greater Vancouver; and raised
awareness of air quality initiatives, liquid waste management projects and green space
protection programs.
I received a Bachelor of Arts (Major in- Communication, Minor in Political Science), and
certificates in Liberal Arts and Cooperative Education from Simon Fraser University in
2000. I am a regular volunteer of the Friends For Life Society, and a communications
committee member of the International Association of Business Communicators and the
Canadian Public Relations Society.
While at SFU, I was a radio show host at CJSF, a regular contributor to
The Peak,
and
co-founder of the Hellenic Student Association. I was also the
1995
Dean of
Communications scholarship recipient. Throughout high school, I was recognized with
numerous awards, bursaries and scholarships, including the provincial scholarship, post-
secondary education stamps, John Norquay Elementary School scholarship, VanCity
scholarship, Gina Francilia Citizenship Cup, W.J. Burnett Trophy,
1994
Oddfellows
United Nations Program, and the French Immersion Bursary Program.

Where I am today is in large part due to the opportunities I was offered at SFU. The
cooperative education program in communications allowed me to gain paid work
experience that I would not have otherwise gotten. Because of this valuable program, my
resume and confidence attracted the attention of employers, allowing me to quickly
secure a position in my field once I graduated. In addition, the Dean of Communications
scholarship I received in my early university years was also of great assistance.
SFU is a terrific university, with excellent programs, teachers and culture, and my five
years there left a lasting impression on me. In return, I am a proud supporter and alumnus
of the communications department and the university, and I would be honoured to serve
SFU as a Senate member.
Becoming a Convocation Senator would allow me to provide hands-on support for the
university. I am interested in bringing fresh ideas to the table on initiatives, teaching and
research, and using my experiences to assist Senate in furthering the mission and
objectives of the university.
One of the assets I would bring to the position of Convocation Senator would be my
familiarity with the university. Having graduated two years ago, the university
experience, culture and programs are still very fresh in my mind. The learning curve in
this respect would be minimal.
?
0
Another asset would be my committee experiences. I am presently a communications
committee member of the International Association of Business Communicators. At my
former job, I was also instrumental in organizing and managing the nominations
committee for the Science Council of BC awards in science and technology.
Finally, I am an energetic and outgoing individual with excellent writing and speaking
skills. I'm sure all of these assets will come in handy for interesting and lively senate
discussions. I have the time, energy and passion to fulfill the duties of this position, and
am confident that you will be proud toelect me as your fellow Convocation Senator.
Thank you for considering my nomination,

Hello Valerie
It was very nice to hear from you.
As requested here is my short biographical statement, a statement of interest, and related
experience.
All of my post secondary education is from SF0 or directly related to SF0. I hold a BA in
Commerce from SF0 - 1974. I have a CA degree - with all of my accounting courses taken at
SF0 - after obtaining my BA. I hold an MBA from SF0 - 1996. My project is one of several
currently detailed on the SF0 Business Administration web site. The CA and MBA were earned
with a measure of academic excellence.
My most recent work experience includes the following: Corporate Controller and Assistant
Secretary of McDonald, Dettweiler & Associates Ltd. 1984 - 1990. Vice President of Finance
& Administration, Northwest Digital Ltd. 1990 - 1991. President of Exburn Management Inc.
1991 - 1997. Vice President of Finance and Administration & Director, Raisio Chemicals,
Americas - 1997 - 2001. Overall I had responsibility for six companies in six countries
throughout North and South America. CFO, Architectura Planning Architecture Interiors Ltd.
2002 to present.
I have a great deal of experience working with SF0. From 1989 to 1993, and 1997 to 1999,
.
1 was a member of the Alumni Board. From 1989 to 1992, I was the Vice President of the
Alumni Board. In 1992 - 1993 I was President of the Alumni Board. In these various
capacities I served on the Search Committee for the new President (Dr. John Stubbs) . I
chaired the Chancellor Selection Committee that nominated Dr. Joe Segal. I also served on
many, many other committees. More recently, I have worked with the Athletic Department.
When I was with Raisio (1997 - 2001), I was instrumental in granting financial awards to
both the men's and women's soccer programs of SF0. Additionally, via Raisio, we sponsored
the Raisio Cup - an annual soccer competition between the men's soccer teams of SF0 and
UBC. I, with the assistance of Dr. Jack Blaney, enabled this game to be featured annually
on a double header with the Whitecaps. I am currently doing a very limited amount of
committee work with the men's soccer programs.
I have a great deal of interest in SF0 and its community involvement. Clearly this is
demonstrated by my association with this institution in many capacities over the past
thirteen years. My personal belief is that we, in our capacity as Alumni, Community or
Business leaders, should contribute or püt effort back into our educational system in
order for the best possible opportunities be made available for future generations. I
know the University, I think I understand most of its challenges, and I have a very strong
financial background. Consequently, I know I can make a very positive contribution to the
University Senate.
Please let me know if you require further details.
