Apaak, Clement
PhD student, Archaeology.
My interests in serving on CRUA, SCIA and ISEC are based on my background as an
international student and my desire to see diversity in programs and faculty.
CRUA: As an international graduate student and the current Graduate Issues Officer of the
SFSS I believe my input on CRUA will be valuable. I sat on a similar committees at the
University of Bergen were I served as the President of the International Students Union.
SCIA and ISEC: My position as the current Commissioner for International Students for
the Canadian Federation of Students will serve both SCIA and ISEC well. As a student
who has studied in three institutions on three continents, I know the value of co-operation
and exchange programs between universities. I will help ensure that SFU's relations and
activities both at home and abroad are not at the expense of basic human rights and the
principles of democracy.
SENATE VICE CHAIR
I bring to the Senate many years of experience in leadership across three continents. I
consider myself a citizen of the world and believe in quality education without boarders.
. have represented students on many committees, boards, and in many other capacities. I
have chaired many meetings and have always been a team player. I will work to ensure
that Senate remains a respectable and honest component of our university.

Bourke, Brynn
I am a third year Political Science! Women's Studies major at Simon Fraser. My
interest in Political Science and social justice have led me to advocate for students and
community rights in many different areas. At Kwantlen University College, I served as
Executive Director of Academics and as Chair of the Academic Issues Committee.
Through my advocacy work, I created a food bank at Kwantlen, resulting in stable
assistance for students and designed 6 new representative positions on the Kwantlen
Student Association Board to represent students with disabilities, students of colour,
women, and other constituency groups. I currently work for the Simon Fraser Student
Society as a Member at Large.
It is with great enthusiasm that I submit my nomination for the Senate
Committee on University Priorities, the Senate Committee on Disciplinary Appeals, and
the Electoral Standing Committee. I come to the table with support from the Student
Senator Caucus. I also have experience in strategic planning, shown through my
committee experience on the Kwantlen Appeals Review Committee, Scholarships and
Bursaries, and I held a student society seat on Kwanrtlen Education Council as an
observer. The Senate Committee on University Priorities would allow me to get
directly involved with the workings of Simon Fraser, The Senate Committee on
Disciplinary Appeals would allow me to bring my experience with natural law and due
process to the table, advocating for fairness in institutional appeals for both the
institution and the student. If provided this unique opportunity, I will venture to make
the process more welcoming to students and to bring student input
Fawkes, Tanya
My name is Tanya Fawkes and I am currently a full time student at Simon Fraser
University. I will be graduating in the Spring 2003 semester. After graduation, I am
planning to continue my education in either psychology or social work. Throughout my
post-secondary education I have tried to make sure that I get as many experiences as
possible. I have volunteered and worked for a number of research projects, joined the
rowing club, and volunteered at local hospitals among a number of other rewarding
experiences that go along with a university education.
The most rewarding experience that I had the opportunity to have was a
National Student Exchange to the University of Minnesota. This was by far the most fun
and valuable experience that I have had so far. I learned so much about myself and
others that I feel that if someone does not have this experience during their education,
they are missing out on a huge learning opportunity. Because I found this such an
enjoyable experience, I would like to be involved in some way in maintaining this and
other International Student Programs at our school. I think that being a student senate
member on the either the committee for the International Student Exchange Programs
or the Senate Committee on International Activities is an ideal way for me to contribute
back to a program that provided an invaluable experience during my education. This
type of position would also allow for me to have at least one more unique experience
before I graduate. Thank you very much for your consideration and I look forward to,
hopefully, working with you.

SGarcia,
Background
I am a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Arts, pursuing a double major
in Sociology and Geography. Since I transferred to SFU (January of 2000), I
have been involved in diverse organizations on campus such as the Simon
Fraser Public Interest Research Group (SFPIRG), the Simon Fraser Campus-
Community Radio (CJSF) and the Sociology and Anthropology Student Union.
Currently, I am the President of the Simon Fraser Student Society. I am
interested in promoting the principles of public, universally accessible, high
quality post-secondary education and meaningful student participation in all
aspects of university governance.
Request for an appointment to the Senate Committee on Agenda and Rules
As the President of the Student Society and a Senator, I want to insure
that students have input in determining the agenda of Senate. My past
experiences in determining agendas and following policy include working as the
chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Student Union and the facilitator of the
SFPIRG Board of Directors. Currently, I am the chair of the Executive of the
is ?
SFSS.
Request for an appointment to the Senate Calendar Committee
The calendar is a very important resource for students. In my time here, I
have become well versed in the use of the SFU Calendar. I am seeking
appointment to CC to provide a student perspective of how to make the calendar
more accessible and even more useful for students.
Jackson, Margaret
Professor of Criminology and Director, Institute for Studies in Criminal Justice Policy
I have been a member of Senate for two years. In that time, I have served on the
Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee (SUAAC), the Senate Committee on
Continuing Studies (SCCS), and the Senate Committee on International Affairs (SCIA).
I feel the proper implementation of the terms of reference for the Senate Committee on
• ?
Agenda and Rules (SCAR) are important for the good order and governance of Senate.
I would thus appreciate the opportunity to serve on that committee to assist in that
process.

MacMillen, Mavis
I am interested in standing for election as a graduate student representative (at-large)
on two Senate Committees, the SGAAC, and SCIA.
I am a part-time Masters student in the School of Communication, researching the
effects of patenting life-forms on biodiversity and health care in developing countries,
and examining the various trade agreements that govern patents on life-forms and
genetic material. I have a particular interest, therefore, in development as an
international activity, and I believe I have something to contribute.
I have already served a term on the SGAAC, and would certainly be willing to serve
again, as I found it a very interesting experience.
Poletz, Taira
I am
currently registered as a 4th year Communications student in the Faculty of
Applied Sciences at SFU. In my student career I have also taken numerous courses in
International Relations and Political Studies as I have a keen interest in.global politics.
After I graduate I hope to pursue a masters degree in Marketing, with the intention of
getting involved in the UN or working with an international organization.
1.
Committee on International Activities
I am interested in international activities and policy development, and have spent time
oversees and in the USA for personal study of various cultures. I have a background in
international relations and political studies and feel this enhances my awareness and
understanding of issues involving the world and how it relates to our university. In the
future I hope to be involved in making changes and an impact on our world through
working in conjunction with the United Nations or another form of international
organization.
2.
Diverse Qualifications Adjudication Committee
I have a keen interest in serving and helping those who have extenuating
circumstances. I have served on various advisory committees which deal with public
welfare, such as the Citizens Advisory Committee (in conjunction with the RCMP) in
Saskatchewan. I feel I am qualified not merely in terms of technical skills, but in terms
of character as I am a good judge of character and circumstance, and am able to make
fair decisions in a timely manner. My personal background and travel experiences
flavour my desire to serve on this committee and help others in need.

Tyab,
It is with great enthusiasm that I submit my nomination for the Senate Committee on
University Priorities and the Committee on Enrollment Management and Planning. I am
honored to have been chosen by my fellow students to fulfill the important responsibility of
Senate representative. I am a fourth year Political Science student specializing in
International Relations and theory. At the Langara Students Union I was a representative
on the Education Council, the body analogous to Senate at Langara College. As the
University Relations Officer for the Simon Fraser Student Society, I am strongly
committed to widening the scope of the democratic participation of students.
Committees
SCUP
I am familiar with strategic planning processes, setting goals, objectives and developing
priorities in a variety of different settings. I played a key organizing role in both the
Corporate Influences Working Group and the U-Pass Working Group. As a result of my
efforts these working groups developed excellent planning and organizing processes. I
look forward to assist with the planning and organization of the University as it faces new
challenges.
SCEMP
As a transfer student from Langara College I will be able to provide a unique perspective
for dealing with issues surrounding enrollment. In the new political climate, universities
• ?
and students face the challenge of increasing enrollment without a similar increase in
funding. The challenge of dealing with competing demands and treating the various
stakeholders of the university in an equitable manner while working with scarce resources
is of utmost importance.

Michelle Kemper
For
SCODA
I feel strongly that serving on Senate is a
serious responsibility, which includes
undertaking the important work of its
various committees. I wish to bring the
perspective of "mature and returning
students" to my work on Senate.
Currently, I'm a fourth year Political Science major, working towards a
minor in Labour Studies and Business Administration.
My past experience and activities include:
• BC Chairperson, Canadian Federation of Students, 94-95;
• Executive member, Camosun College Student Society, 92-93;
• Employee, BC Coalition for Public Education, 1996;
• Member, Langara College Board of Governors, 95-96;
• Member, SFU Diverse Qualification Applicant Committee, 2002;
• Ministerial Assistant to BC Cabinet Ministers of Transportation and
Highways, Women's Equality, and Energy/Mines/Northern Development,
96-00; and,
• Government Relations Consultant, 2000-present.
My past advocacy experience allows my to ensure students have
meaningful representation in the operations of our University. Specifically,
SCODA is an important venue for the principles of natural justice to be
• upheld. Students rely on this committee to ensure penalties for dishonesty
and misconduct are fairly imposed. My past experience will aid in ensuring
that students trust the decision-making processes of our institution.
I thank you in advance for your support.

Joel Warren
Dear colleague Senators,
I feel I will be an asset to the Senate committee on disciplinary appeals if
elected. I was once put through a disciplinary process in another
institution which arose from false accusations and trumped up charges.
had to battle for myself on grounds of equity and and legality. The process
was long and drawn out but in the end my appeal overturned the original
decision.
What I have learned from this experience is a working understanding of
natural justice and procedural fairness and a much better understanding of
administrative tribunals. I am true to my values of fairness and
impartiality but I am also a strong advocate of students and their
situations. My senses of justice and analysis will complement one another
well in this position.
I have been a Student Senator for the past year, and despite scheduling
conflicts I was able to assert myself as THE critical Student Senator asking
insightful and tough questions on issues of contention. I was the Student
Representative on the Search Committee for the Associate Vice-President
Policy, Equity, Legal, and I was the University Relations Officer for the
Simon Fraser Student Society.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Joel Warren, Student Senator

SCUP:
I have completed one term with SCUP and have attended whenever my teaching schedule
allowed. I make an effort to contribute to most discussions of the committee, but have
particular experience in the areas of multi-disciplinary programs, distance education,
continuing studies, international programs, consulting services, student advising, and the
HC campus. These experiences supplement my disciplinary education in statistics,
mathematics, and science. I would like to continue to work with this important Senate
committee to help steer SFU toward a vigorous future.
SCIA:
My interest in this committee derives from my experience with the Indonesia
project, and also from a long-standing interest in foreign travel and multi-culturalism. I
have completed one term on this committee and feel I now know the rules well enough to
make a useful contribution. I would like a chance to continue for one more term on this
committee.
SCEMP:
This committee has a very important job - to decide on the enrollment targets
each semester, with the constraints being the funding per enrolled student and
the maximum number of students funded. In addition, the allocation of new enrollments
to the many categories of admission requires a consideration of both political and
statistical issues. I hope to continue on this committee to help make these decisions in a
way that is fair to the many competing units.

was long and drawn out but in the end my appeal overturned the original

Muneer Esmail
Dear Members of the Senate:
RE: Request for an appointment to the Senate Committee on Continuing Studies (SCCS).
S
My name is Muneer Esmail, and I am a graduate student in the Department of Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry. When I joined SFU last September, I did so with two goals in mind:
I. To complete my doctoral work so that I can eventually take up a career in teaching and academia.
2. To become an active and contributing member of my university.
Over the past semester, I have had the privilege of serving on the SCCS. My commitment to the pursuit of
knowledge has proven a tremendous asset because it has helped me identify with the goals of the Senate
Committee on Continuing Studies. The SCCS serves a vital function at the University by overseeing the
development of continuing education credit and credit-free programs. At the heart of the SCCS are the
criteria it uses to assess the numerous proposals for continuing education programs. These criteria, which
are critical for ensuring the highest standard of education, are currently being expanded and redefined in a
more rigorous style. I would very much like to see these changes through and hope you will consider re-
appointing me to the SCCS.
Danny Chen
Finding something to occupy myself is always interesting, especially something new and challenging.
Prior to the April voting, I was intensively involved with the SFUTA (Taiwanese Association) - an on-
campus non-profit student organization of 700 plus members. My duties as the President of the club gave
me a lot of opportunities to learn things that are not taught in lectures nor at work. After sixteen months
of leading the SFUTA, I decided that it was time for me to do more for my friends and fellow students on
campus. The positions in the Senate and the Board of Governors were perfect choices; it looks like I have
found something new and challenging again!
-SCODA-
Nobody is perfect, and every person makes mistakes. I had been in tough corners before and I can
understand how there can easily be many sides to a story. Having had to deal with more than my fair
share of troubles when I was younger made me realize how important it was to have someone taking the
time to fully understand and see the situation in multiple angles. This is not to say that I see
everything sympathetically; there are still going to be obvious offences that will need to be dealt with
sternly. However, if this committee permanently has someone onboard who can relate to bad situations, it
would not only benefit the committee but also the students.
-SCUTL-
Undergraduate studies are the fundamentals to every university student. It is important that students
receive the right information and teaching, because different programs will ultimately help students find
their specialties. It is also important for the school to know how students feel about different programs. I
can reach out to a lot of students of Asian background because I can convey the schools ideas and
thoughts to them in languages that they are familiar with, as well as collect their valuable feedback to the
Senate.

Valerie Dunsterville
Lay Senator
I have a genuine interest in the committees on which I have been serving and would like to continue on
them. I believe that longer service and experience on these committees provides continuity and the
opportunity to understand the issues SFU faces. I also hope that as a result of the experience, I am in a
better position to support Senate in its decision making.
Gina Fernandez
My name is Gina Fernandez and I am a fourth year student at Simon Fraser University. I would like to
apply to be the regular undergraduate representative of the
Senate Committee of Disciplinary Appeals,
Diverse Qualifications Adjudication Committee, Senate Committee of Undergraduate Studies, and
Senate Committee on University Honours.
Currently, I am the alternate undergraduate representative
on the Senate Committee of Disciplinary Appeals. Though I find this position rewarding, I would
welcome the opportunity to be more involved in the senate committees. In addition to SCODA, I am the
current undergraduate representative on the Senate Library Committee.
My
time on this committee has
familiarized me with the procedures of the Senate Committees and has motivated me to become active in
other Senate Committees at this university. I would find it interesting to be a part of the committee that
recognizes exceptional individuals by awarding University Honours, SCUH. DQAC appeals to me
because my background includes extensive training in dance, music and other activities, and I believe this
provides me with a solid background for this position. I would like to be a part of SCUS, in particular,
because I have a wide range of academic interests and consequently, have taken a variety of
undergraduate courses. I feel this gives me the appropriate background for this position. In addition, I
transferred to SFU from another institution and therefore, I am quite knowledgeable about policies
concerning credit transfer.
My
past work experience includes employment with the Vancouver International Airport in the Customer
Service Department, and this has allowed me to become proficient in the areas of conflict resolution and
decision-making. My participation in the Senate Committees at Simon Fraser University, and current
employment with the Airport Medical Clinic has refined my time management skills. Also, my
experience in dealing with the public has been diverse, including mentally and physically handicapped
students and extended health care residents. I have extensive experience working with teams, as I was a
member of the City Youth Council of Richmond, Library Youth Council, and a peer counselling team in
Richmond. As well, my leadership qualities were enhanced during my time as assistant coach of an
athletics team in Richmond. I believe these aforementioned skills and qualities are essential to a
committee member and therefore, I would like to be considered for these committees. I know my open
mind, enthusiasm, ability to learn quickly and proven competence in interpersonal relations, make me the
right candidate for these positions.
Amit Kumar Goel
I, Amit Kumar Goel, an international graduate student at SFU am in my 5
0
' semester and have been
involved in various volunteer activities on campus including two senate committees . Hence, this is my
second nomination for the Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships, Awards & Bursaries (SPCSAB) and
Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee (SGAAC). I have been consistent in attending and
participating in these two committees and wish to continue to do so.

Having studied at various international institutions prior to joining SFU, I have vast experience in student
related issues and challenges and academic institutional management. At Asian Institute of Technology
(AlT), Bangkok, Thailand, I had the privilege of being the General Secretary for the Student Union and
representing students to the Student Relations Committee of the Board of Trustees. These experiences
have enriched me in many ways and I would like to further these abilities and improve my leadership
skills. Therefore, I would like to present myself as a candidate for the senate committees.
Peter Grimmett
Professor of Education and Director of the Institute for Studies in Teacher Education at Simon Fraser
University.
Before joining SFU, I was Director of the Centre for the Study of Teacher Education at UBC. arch
interests focus on how practitioners derive the requisite professional knowledge and skills to do their
work competently. I study how teachers are affected by processes like reflection and action research, etc.,
and by the socio-political-cultural contexts in which they do their work.
I have served as President of the Canadian Association for Teacher Education and currently serve as the
Associate Editor of two journals,
The Journal of
Curriculum and Supervision
(published by ASCD in
Alexandria, VA) and
The Journal
of
Education for Teaching
(published by Carfax in the UK). I also
served on the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Education
Committee for three years—one year as chair—and am presently a member of the Canada Research
Chairs' Program College of Reviewers. Recently, I was a key-note speaker at international conferences in
• Kansas City, MO., Lahti, Finland, Tel Aviv, Israel, Ottawa, Montreal, and Chicago, IL. In May 2000, I
received an honorary doctorate from the University of Tampere, Finland, in recognition of my
outstanding merits as a researcher and educator in the areas of professional development and teacher
education. In total, I have published 36 refereed journal articles, written seven books and 34 chapters in
books, and also gained close to a million dollars in research funding (mainly from SSHRC) and produced
two professional videos. In the last two years I have undertaken major work for the province of British
Columbia, studying patterns of teacher supply and demand, developing policy to address a possible
shortage of educators.
I have been a member of Senate for two years. During that time, I have served on the Senate Committee
for University Priorities (SCUP), dealing with budgetary matters, academic unit reviews, and academic
strategic planning, the Senate Committee on University Honours (SCUH), and the Senate Policy
Committee on Scholarships and Bursaries (SPCSAB). I also served on the Vice President, Academic
search committee in 1999-2000 and have been the chair of the Education Faculty Tenure Committee for
six years.
Thus, I bring considerable experience to the work of SCUP. Having served on SCUP for the past two
years, I am ready and willing to continue my service in the important area of establishing university
priorities.

Kamal Gupta
Professor (Ph.D., EE, McGill, 1987)
School of Engineering Science
Statement: (SPCSAB): Student scholarships are critical to attracting good quality students to SFU. At the
same time, these scholarships form an important financial factor from a student's perspective. I am
deeply interested in these issues. I am also a candidate for NSERC's (post graduate) engineering
scholarship committee. I am hoping that the latter would provide me with some global perspectives that I
can then bring to the SFU scene.
Statement (SCEMP): SFU is currently facing significant issues in the face of continual tight budgets for
last several years. At the same time, there are opportunities for growth in certain disciplines such as
engineering and computer science. I advocate a balanced approach to many of these issues, guided by
ideals of scholarly excellence and enhancing SFUs research
reputation.
Brief Background
My research interests are in Computational Robotics and a key aim of my research is to develop
algorithms that enable robots to have autonomous capabilities to function in their environment. My
research is documented in twenty one journal papers, over fifty refereed conference papers, several book
articles, and an edited book, published by John Wiley. I am a co-chair of IEEE Robotics and Automation
Society's Technical Committee on Motion and Path Planning.
I have served on several departmental and inter-departmental committees including Chair of the
Undergraduate Program Committee in Engineering Science. I have also served n a large number of
international scientific committees; most recently, I have been on the Program Committee of 2000, 2001,
and 2002 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.
Cohn H. Jones
Candidate for SCIA
Background: Long-standing Chemistry faculty member who has served as Chair of Chemistry(79-88) and
Dean of Science(88-99);actively promoted international activities in Science in Indonesia, Cuba and
Chile; served on SCIA as a Senate representative some years ago and from 1999 to 2001 was a non-
voting member of SCIA in my capacity in international relations. I believe that there are many areas
where the universities international activities can be significantly strengthened and would welcome the
opportunity to work through SCIA in pursuing these improvements.
For example:
only 80 to 100 SFU undergraduates out of some 18,000 head count participate in exchanges in each
year. We must do a much better job of supporting our undergraduates in study-abroad activities.
only 60 to 80 students each year participate in field schools, with most field schools operating well
below the 20-25 recommended range. Ways must be found to make it easier for students to participate by,
for example, setting the SCIA-approved budgets for these field-schools at a more reasonable level.
on-campus services for the 700 or so international students are minimal and SCIA should assist in
addressing this shortfall.
international development and education projects should be strongly linked to academic departments
and faculties and to the universities academic objectives. Such linkages have existed in some but not all
projects in the past.

My name is Peter Liljedahl. I'm a doctoral student in the Faculty of Education focusing on the learning of

I chose the SAB because I feel strongly about the University's responsibility to listen to the particulars of
individual cases and to weigh those particulars in parallel to the established policies. The SAB is one of
the vehicles of this process.

investigations into activities including harassment, abuse and fraud, audits, multiculturalism and
curriculum development. I have had extensive experience in all facets of management and administration
in a large urban school district. During my years on the Senate I have served on the Senate Committee on

Faculty: Business
Year: 4
I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read my bio and consider my name for election to SCUS and
SCODA. I am currently a fourth year business major with plans to complete concentrations in
management information systems and finance and still possibly complete an honours degree.
However, I do feel that academic life involves more than reading a few books, taking a few exams, and
making a few friends. As corny as it sounds, I feel that the one who gets the most out of school is the one
who puts the most into it. This is my primary reason for wanting to participate on these committees. In the
following two paragraphs i will elaborate on the two committees i have the most interest in and wish to be
elected to.
SCUS is a committee i would like to join because after three full years of post-secondary education, i feel
that i have a good set of experiences and a solid base of knowledge upon which I can offer suggestions
and constructive comments regarding our curriculum.
SCODA is a committee i would like to participate in because i believe i can offer fair judgments as it
pertains to other students. I have a proven background of giving sound advice and analyzing situations in
a critical but just matter.
I believe that my business background will provide a sense of diversity to these committees as business
students tend not to take as active a role in these scholastic committees as students from other faculties.
Hopefully, that asset will set me aside from the other candidates.

Finally, as almost a footnote, I will be travelling across Europe until the beginning of the school year.
Therefor, i will not be able to attend any meetings in the summertime. However, i am very willing to
work through correspondence. I will be constantly checking my email and hope to hear from someone
telling me that i have been elected.
Graham Percival
Graham Percival is a fifth-year undergraduate student pursuing an honours in philosophy, an extended
minor in music, and a minor in mathematics. He has served on SAB for two years as alternate student
member, and on SCUS and the Calendar Committee for two years as student member.
The breadth of Graham's courses has given him experience in many different approaches to
undergraduate studies, prompting his interest in SCUS and the Calendar Committee. He has enjoyed
being active on those committees for the past two years and sees no reason to stop now.

Statement
I strongly believe in the participatory democracy model of University governance. The University Act
clearly gives Senate the authority and responsibility to determine academic policy. Senate and its
committees provide the opportunity for faculty and other members of the university community to advise
and monitor the activities of administrators, whose role it is to implement academic policies. I have both
the experience and commitment to take an active part in this process.

Joseph G. Peters
Professor, School of Computing Science
During my 19 years at SFU, I have served on many committees at all levels. I am currently a member of
Senate, SCUP, and the Senate Committee to Review and Develop Undergraduate Curricula, and I am
chair of S CODA. I recently chaired the Committee to Review the Student Conduct Policies, and served
on SCIA, SCAP, and SCUB.
I am keenly interested in the future of our university and in the open and democratic development of
policies that will allow us to excel. I believe that effective communication is essential to achieving this
goal and I have worked hard to establish contacts in many departments across the university. I feel that
my experience has given me a broad view of the university and its workings. I would like to continue
contributing to the governance of the university by renewing my membership on SCUP.
My main research interest is mathematical modelling of communication networks. I have published
approximately 30 refereed articles and supervised 11 M.Sc. and Ph.D. recipients. I have been on the
organizing committees for several conferences and workshops.
Randy Peg Peters
PhD candidate
Humanities Department, SFU
I am letting my name stand for the Senate Appeals Board. Last year I served as a member of the SCODA
(Senate Cttee on Disciplinary Appeals). I am currently a graduate student in the Humanities department. I
have finished all my course work and have begun writing my dissertation which is on the Platonic
philosophy of George Grant. As a Special Arrangements student I have proved myself to be self-
motivated and hard-working. I have also taught as a sessional instructor at SPU for the past two years and
know how important it is that the students are treated fairly. As I have the time this year to commit to
something like this, I believe I could be a real asset to the board.
I am married and have four daughters - all under the age of 6! I love it! I enjoyed training for triathalons
and sailing with my family in the summers. I volunteer with my wife in our local parish helping do pre-
marital counseling.
If you have any further questions please contact me. Thank you for the opportunity to serve my
community in this way.
Reza Pourvali
Dear Senate members,
My name is Reza Pourvali and I am a Molecular Biology & Biochemistry (MBB) major with a
cGPA of 4.17. My goal at SFU is to achieve academic excellence through quality education, and
meanwhile give back to university and community by unique volunteer service and leadership. I was the
recipient of a Gordon M Shrum entrance scholarship in 2000, and have been on SFU's Honour Roll since
last fall. I am also a member of Golden Key International Honour Society and have received the society's
medal and scholarship. Currently I am a Research Assistant in Dr. Baillie,s renowned Genomic Lab at

SFU, and my funding comes from an NSERC Undergraduate Research Award. Service to university and
community is of extreme importance and value to me. I am the Vice-President of MBB Student Union
where I am responsible for running the executive and helping with all events. In addition, I am the
Student Representative in MBB Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. I work very hard to reflect the
concerns and feedback of approximately 200-300 students that I represent. Through my involvement
with MBBSU and DUCC, I have developed invaluable leadership and teamwork skills, and a deep desire
to help make SFU the best university in every aspect. Moreover, I have developed effective
communication and public speaking skills through my involvement with MBBSU, DUCC, and Faculty of
Science student recruitment. In addition to acting as a tour guide and mentor, I have given a number of
presentations to large groups of students at SFU and high schools across lower mainland. My service
definitely extends beyond SFU: I am a volunteer at Feliburn Care Centre where I assist the elderly in
many ways. I received Fellburn,s Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding volunteering in 2001. I am
also a volunteer in the Emergency Department of Burnaby Hospital where I assist patients and family
members at a time of stress and need. I am honoured to be the winner of 2002 SFU Alumni Association
Outstanding Student Leadership Award.
My goal in life is to make a difference in the world by leadership and education. My goal is to
make my university, my community, and my world a yet better place. I have spent every moment of my
service to SFU with a deep satisfaction and a strong belief in what I was doing. For me, nothing is more
pleasing, more impressive and more rewarding than to see that my work is benefiting my university. I
strongly believe that SFU,s Senate and various Senate Committees are a very important part of our
dynamic university. Much of SFU,s reputation and success is due to the hard work of people like you. I
am very interested to serve on the aforementioned senate committees, and am excited about serving my
university in a new way. I believe in teamwork, respect for ideas of others, and a positive and
. ?
enthusiastic attitude. I believe in SFU and its people. If elected, I will do my best to serve my university
in the best possible way: a desire which is very close to my heart.
Jennifer Siegfried
Jennifer Siegfried is a third-year undergraduate student in the Faculty of Arts, Department of English.
She has been a student at SFU since January of 1999 after transferring from UVic, and she has been
studying the Arts and Sciences with great interest. It was only recently that she decided to pursue a Major
in English, possibly with a view to doing an MA in the future. Jennifer has also nearly finished a
Certificate in Liberal Arts. Currently, she also works full-time at the University/Industry Liaison office in
Strand Hall.
Jennifer's interest in the Diverse Qualifications Committee mirrors her academic interests: she feels that
instructors at SFU should have a demonstrated dedication to an interdisciplinary approach to teaching
pursuant to SFU's mandate for a broad-based education. Her diverse academic background is testament
to SFU's success thus far; Jennifer would like to see that this continues to be possible for other students.
Jennifer's interest in the Senate Library Committee and Library Penalties Appeal committee stems from
her academic interests. As an English student, Jennifer is naturally interested in the library, and wants to
learn more about its workings beyond her immediate experience with it. Sitting on this Committee should
provide a good opportunity for her to gain additional knowledge related to her field, while simultaneously
allowing her further involvement with another facet of the University.
