SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
MEMORANDUM
To:
Senate
From:
A. MacKinnon, Chair
Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
Subject:
Curriculum Revisions
Faculty of Business Administration -
(SCUS Reference: SCUS 02-12)
1^ko .p"
Date:
April 12, 2002
For Information
Acting under delegated authority, at the April 9, 2002 meeting, SCUS approved the following
curriculum revision in the Faculty of Business Administration:
. deletion of BUEC 333 from the Upper Division Core for the Business Administration
Major and Joint Majors (with the exception of the Joint Major and Joint Honors with
Economics.)
Rationale
The Faculty of Business Administration has identified a need to modify the required quantitative
course sequence of BUEC 232, BUEC 333 and BUS 336. The current sequence, which has a
theoretical orientation, does not meet the needs of the majority of Business Administration
students. Overall, too much material is covered, and presented in a manner which is too
theoretical for the average business students. In many cases, not enough realistic business
examples and <<hands-on)) computer experiences are provided.
To address these issues, an integrated, two course, required sequence has been created. The new
courses have a strong applied business orientation and make extensive use of EXCEL. There are
three fundamental objectives for the modified required course sequence:
1.
Unify the student's ability to approach quantitative business related problems by
integrating methods and applications throughout the course sequence;
2.
Place emphasis on realistic business examples and the process by which a manager
might analyze a problem;
3.
Provide students with the skills to analyze business problems with tools they have
acccess to and will use in their careers.
The two revised courses - BUEC 232-4 and BUS 336-4 - were approved in December 2001.
