Report to Senate from the?
Committee to Review University Admissions?
2000 - 2001 Academic Year
The Committee to Review University Admissions (CRUA) reviews appeals from both graduate
and undergraduate applicants who feel aggrieved by the decision of the University to apply a
particular admission, readmission or transfer credit policy in his or her specific case when special
circumstances are present. An individual who wishes to appeal must submit the appeal in
writing, specifying the special circumstances to be considered. All appellants have the option of
appearing for an in-person hearing at a CRUA meeting or of having a representative appear on
their behalf. In 2000 CRUA held seven meetings: three for Fall, two for Spring, and two for
Summer. In 2001 the Committee held seven meetings: three for Fall, two for Spring, and two for
Summer.
A total of 89 appeals were heard by the Committee for the 2000 academic year: 48 for the Fall,
• ?
15 for the Spring, and 26 for the Summer. Of all appeals heard 18 were sustained and 71 were
denied. For the 2001 academic year: a total of 57 appeals were heard. 36 in the Fall, 15 in the
Spring, and 6 in the Summer. Of all appeals heard 18 were sustained and 39 were denied. On
occasion CRUA may deny a student but give conditions under which a student may be admitted
to a future semester. All numbers included in this report and the attached tables reflect decisions
made at the hearings and do not include subsequent admissions of students based on criteria set
by CRUA.
The Committee received one appeal from a student for graduate programs in 2000-2001.
There are two charts attached. The first reports by semester the number of appeals received and
the decisions made since Spring 1999. The second chart reports the academic standings of those
appellants admitted by CRUA.
