Proposal for a Co-operative Education Program in the Faculty
of Education
Why
an Education Co-op?
Currently Simon Fraser University offers Co-op programs in all faculties except
Education. Many of the co-op placements (e.g. Science World, the Vancouver
Aquarium, SFU's Mini University) provide excellent learning opportunities for students
interested in teaching and education, and many more co-op opportunities are being
developed specifically in the areas of ESL teaching both locally and in foreign countries.
At the moment, these jobs are going to co-op students who have a background in a
specific discipline area (e.g. science students and Science World), but not necessarily in
Education. There is a great opportunity to broaden the learning experiences of
undergraduates in the Faculty of Education through offering the option to participate in a
Co-operative Education program as they progress through their degree.
The idea of a Co-op Program in the Faculty of Education would mean that we could bring
together students who have a desire to be teachers within a broad cross section of
organizations that have related opportunities. Since the positions are in the area of
"education" it makes sense that Education students have an opportunity to fill them annd
someone who has a background and interest in education could be an ideal candidate for
such positions.

Background:
Target Audiences:
• Pre-PDP students who choose to work during their degree, and for whom this
experience would be relevant to their longer term goals.
• Pre-PDP students who would like an opportunity to get paid experience working
as a "teacher" not just volunteering.
• Students who do not have an interest in teaching K-12, but hope to be a teacher or
trainer in other areas. i.e.) develop training programs for the workplace; dance
teacher; daycare coordinator; ESL instructor, public educator, etc.
• Students that would like to travel and get an education. They could teach ESL
while they experience different cultures.
• Foreign students that have come to SFU for a degree, and could teach ESL in their
own countries when they go home - a teaching co-op would be a good
educational experience.
• Post-PDP students who would like to finish their degrees with an International
Experience. (this refers to International ESL teaching offers)
