Report to Senate from the?
Committee to Review University Admissions
2002 Calendar Year
The Committee to Review University Admissions (CRUA) reviews appeals from both
graduate and undergraduate applicants who feel aggrieved by the decision of the
University to apply a particular admission, readmission or transfer credit policy in his or
her specific case when special circumstances are present. An individual who wishes to
appeal must submit the appeal in writing, specifying the special circumstances to be
considered. All appellants have the option of appearing for an in-person hearing at a
CRUA meeting or of having a representative appear on their behalf. In 2001 CRUA held
seven meetings: two for Spring, two for Summer, and three for Fall. In 2002 the
Committee also held seven meetings: two for Spring, one for Summer, and four for Fall.
An extra meeting was held for Fall 2002 to review two appeals for admission to programs
at the Surrey campus.
For the 2002 calendar year a total of 30 appeals were heard, 7 were sustained and 23 were
denied. This is a decrease of 27 appeals from 2001 and
59
from 2000. A decrease in the
number of new admissions to undergraduate studies for the 2002 semesters has decreased
the number of appeals heard by CRUA. Students required higher grade point averages to
enter, have usually received a final denial notice earlier, have had the opportunity to
received better information regarding their standing with the University, and, therefore,
made other arrangements.
The table below reports the number of appeals received and the outcomes for Spring
2000 to Fall 2002. The second table, attached, reports the current academic standings of
those appellants admitted by CRUA. In certain circumstances CRUA may deny a student
but give conditions under which a student may be admitted to a future semester. The
attached tables reflect decisions made at the hearings and do not include subsequent
admissions of students based on criteria set by CRUA.
