Re: President's Performance Review Committee
By way of introduction, I am a doctoral student in Education, entering the third year of my
program. I am pleased to have been nominated to serve on this committee as a graduate student
representative. I am interested in being considered to serve on this committee.
Believing strongly in the value of contribution to the life of the university on many levels, I have
been a co-chair of the Education Graduate Student's Association, and am currently co-chair of
SFU's Diversity Working Group. As well, I volunteer as a trainer for Diversity Awareness
Workshops. I have been involved in organizing many events within the Faculty of Education
and for the Diversity Working Group.. Through my involvement in university affairs at the
student level, I hope I will be able to bring the perspectives of students in carrying out this
review and also make a useful contribution to this committee.

Re:
Nomination
for position of
Graduate Student
at Large on the Committee to Review the
Performance of the University President
Prior to Re-appointment
I am forwarding this statement in support of my self-nomination for the position of Graduate
?
?
S ?
Student at Large on the Committee to Review the Performance of the University President Prior
to Re-appointment.
I am a masters candidate in the University's School of Interactive Arts and Technology.
My interest in serving on the committee stems from a number of factors. One is my involvement
in representing the concerns of graduate students to—and through—the Graduate Issues
Committee of the SFUSS; the chair of that committee has endorsed the putting forward of me for
this position. Another factor is my keen interest in ensuring the best and most productive
relations between the School of Information Arts and Technology and the University at large,
which of course implies an interest not only in the former, but also the latter.
My expertise in performance reviews comes from industry experience; in the previous decade
and the early part of this one, I worked in the software and web application development
industries as a team lead, manager, and executive, up to the level of vice-president, product
management. My experience in those domains included working with NCompass Labs, a
successful SFU spin-off that was eventually acquired by Microsoft. In those capacities, I was
closely involved in the hiring and performance reviews of team members and executives at all
levels, up to and including CEO.
Please note that while I am very interested in being a part of this process and willing to devote
my time and energy to making it successful, I may not be available for the December 17
meeting, as I may be out of town at that point in time; the other prospective meeting times should
not pose a problem for me.
Thank in advance for your consideration of this.

Senate Meeting on November 1, 2004
PERCIVAL, Paul W.
Professor, Department of Chemistry. Initial appointment in 1979.
Member of Senate 1989-99 and 2000-present. Vice-Chair of Senate 2003-2005.
Relevant Committee Experience
During the past 25 years at SFU I have served on a great variety of committees at the
departmental, faculty and university level, including search committees for senior academic
administrators (deans and vice-presidents). In addition, I have taken part in external reviews of
academic units at SFU and elsewhere.
Statement
I strongly believe in the participatory democracy model of university governance. Senate and its
committees provide the opportunity for faculty and other members of the university community
to advise and monitor the activities of administrators, whose role it is to implement academic
policies set by Senate. The President is the head of the administration and it is appropriate that
Senate be part of a review of his performance in office. I have both the experience and
commitment to take an active part in this process.
PATRICK SMITH
I am currently a fourth year honours economics student, with further education and career
goals in the same field. Student life is definitely the centrality of my life, but it is by no means
the extent thereof. In between study session, I maintain an active, outdoor lifestyle, and work
part-time as a cook at a local golf club. I am also a news junky and a musician. Diversity is an
important theme for me, which helps in decision making, as I am able to see many sides of
whichever issue is at hand.
As far as being eligible to sit on the Senate Committee on Disciplinary Appeals, I feel I
can be an assertive, fair decision-maker. Of course, as an undergraduate I have no formal training
in law, but, whenever the opportunity has been available I have enrolled in law-related classes,
including "Introduction to Canadian Legal Systems" and "Economics and Law." My interest in
law extends beyond credit-hours: I stay current with world affairs such that extensive political
reading has given me at least an elementary grasp on regional, national and international law
forums.
My views and reasoning can be an asset to the Committee. As academic dishonesty
appears to becoming a momentous issue in the universities, I would welcome the chance to help
universities
and
students resolve allegations in a fair, rigorous manner.
