Terms of Reference
At its July 7, 2004 meeting SCUP reviewed and approved the terms of reference for the
Jack and Nancy Farley University Professorship in History, which is now forwarded to
Senate for approval.
Motion
That Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors the terms of reference
for the Jack and Nancy Farley University Professorship in History.

Terms of Reference
The Jack and Nancy Farley University Professorship in History ("the Farley
Professor") is established by the Jack and Nancy Farley Endowment. It is situated in
the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and is dedicated to the study of history, which
will be understood to include studies of the past, including the recent past, carried out
within the several departments and programs of the Faculty of Arts and Social
Sciences.

her/his discipline at SFU and increase its profile within the broader academic com-
munity. S/he will engage in research in History, conceived inclusively to include both
social science and humanities interests and methodologies. The research and teaching
responsibilities of the Professorship will focus on the interpretation of individuals,
groups, events, institutions, artistic expressions, and/or other historical phenomena in
their social and intellectual contexts.
The term of this appointment is 5 years, renewable once to a maximum of 10
years.
1)
Relevant Policy: A10.06. Appointment and renewal to the Farley Professorship
shall require a recommendation from the relevant TPC (A 10.06 (sections 3.8, 3.2,
3.6)). The Dean will recommend a candidate from existing members in the
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, subject to the nomination, appointment, and
renewal procedures of Policy A 10.06. In unusual circumstances, external
candidates may be considered. Note: the six letters of reference must be external
to the University.
2)
Stipend: A stipend of approximately $20,000 per year plus benefits shall be pro-
vided from the Endowment. Depending on the status of the Endowment, a re-
search grant may be awarded.
3)
The Farley Professor will normally teach
75%
of the standard teaching load in the
department or school in which s/he is appointed.
4)
Fund administration: The Jack and Nancy Farley Endowment (#422202) will be
held by Simon Fraser University. The administrator of the Fund will be the Vice
President—Academic, or his/her designate. The capital of the Endowment Fund
will be held in perpetuity with a portion of annual earned income reinvested in the
Endowment to protect its value over time. A portion of annual earned income (see
Endowment Management Policy GP 20) will be used each year to support the

activities of Farley Professorship, including teaching and research.

In the event that circumstances make the specified use of the Endowment Fund no
longer practicable or desirable, the Board of Governors of Simon Fraser
University is hereby authorized to make any changes it may deem necessary in the
terms or use of the Endowment Fund. Such changes, however, are to be in
keeping as far as possible with the original spirit and general intent of the
Endowment Fund. This agreement may be amended by mutual consent of the
donors and the University.
