CANDIDATE INFORMATION FOR ELECTIONS AT
SENATE MEETING ON MONDAY, JUNE 7, 2004
BANSAL, RAVI
Hi my name is Ravi Barisal and I would like to apply for the Senate Committee on Disciplinary
Appeals. Currently I am an executive member of the Psychology Student Union (PSU), and in the past
represented Psychology in the Forum. I have always been involved in community activities ever since
high school and really enjoy working with SFU related clubs and events. I love listening to situations
thoroughly and believe that a decision can only be made after listening to both sides of the story. I want
to represent SFU's students and be more involved with the academic procedures that are established in the
University.
BECHHOEFER, JOHN
Biograph
y
: John Bechhoefer received his PhD in Physics from the University of Chicago and did
postdoctoral work at the Université de Paris (Orsay) and the Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon before
coming to SFU in 1991. His current research includes both soft condensed matter and biophysics.
Statement: I benefited greatly in my own education from international education, and I would like to help
bring about similar experiences for our current undergraduates. As an institution, we also benefit by
having foreign students attend, and it is important to speak up in support of exchange programs in the face
of so many demands on time and resources at SFU. I have been serving on the ISEC committee for the
past two years, and I look forward to being able to serve another term.
. ?
BREDEN, FELIX
Associate Professor, Department
of
Biological Sciences
Statement for Research Ethics Board
I have been a member of the Department of Biological Sciences at SFU since 1993; before that I
was at the University of Missouri-Columbia for 10 years. I work mostly in the evolutionary biology and
genetics of fishes, particularly of natural populations of the guppy and closely-related species from South
America. In terms of service to the academic community, I have been particularly interested in graduate
education. I have been chair of the graduate studies committees at SFU and University of Missouri, and
chair of the Faculty of Science graduate studies committee at SFU. I was recently elected to the Faculty
Senate as a representative from the Faculty of Science.
As part of my participation in Senate, I would like to serve on the Research Ethics Board.
Obviously the Research Ethics Board has to deal with controversial and difficult decisions, balancing
societal good against rights of participants in experiments, and ensuring that research at SFU conforms to
ethical standards. My training in biology has been very broad, from field biology and animal behavior to
genetics and genomics. I am now extending part of my research into analyzing human diversity in
immunoglobulin genes, and how this diversity affects design of therapeutic antibodies and vaccines. I
have also been active in community politics for many years, particularly while in Missouri, and have
experience building consensus on difficult decisions. I feel my diverse interests and experience will give
me the perspective necessary to help make wise decisions on the
REB.
CHOW, BOB
I am a PhD candidate in Educational Psychology program. I am very interested to serve as student-
member on SCIA for the term from June 2004 to May 2006, which conveniently covers the period of my
candidacy in the PhD program.
Briefly, I have the following relevant experiences in international affairs which I would like to bring to
the committee:
International Liaison Consultant (1996-1999), Science Council of British Columbia

2
• International Business Training Program Manager (1997-2000), Human Resources Development
Canada
• Director, Trade Intelligence (1993-1996), British Columbia Trade Development Corporation
• 20 years international working experience covering Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, and
Nigeria
• An MBA in international business
I would be very pleased to have the chance to be of service to the committee.
COPELAND, LYNN
I have participated in the Senate Committee on University Honours for the past year and two
years previously. I have been an ex-officio member of Senate for six years and was also a member of
UBC's Senate for six years as librarian representative. In my role as University Librarian and having
worked in the SFU Library for some thirteen years, I believe I bring a broad perspective of the
University's foci and values to SCUH.
The conference of honorary degrees and other honours on leaders in scholarship, culture,
community and business is an opportunity to pay tribute not only to the recipient, but also to the values
and commitments represented by the committee. It is also an opportunity to reflect SFU's values and
commitments. As such, it is important that the group of honorees each year be a broad group of the
highest quality and I will work within the committee to ensure these goals are met.
DOYLE-JONES, CAROL
Statement of Interest for a position on the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee (SGAAC)
My name is Carol Doyle-Jones and I am a Master's candidate in the Education department. I attended
Trent University and Queen's University, both in Ontario, and was involved in various sports teams as
well as their respective Education Student Associations. My most notable career choices have included
journalism, coaching and teaching. I have taught for eight years in both elementary and high schools and
have, therefore, contributed to and organized various events and committees. Through my current posting
as a grade seven teacher, I am involved in organizing such events as graduation and Outdoor Education
week, as well as being a part of such committees as Awards and Scholarships. I have also been a
UNICEF volunteer for five years. I am now focusing my volunteer time on Simon Fraser University
where I hope to become involved in various areas of university life. Although my life is a busy one, I feel
it is important to create connections in our place of learning in order to make informed decisions for
ourselves and others, and I am willing to take the time to be actively involved. Thank you for your kind
consideration.
DUNSTERVILLE, VALERIE
I have served on Senate since 1981 and have been on SCUP and SCIA for some years now and
would like to continue to serve SFU by remaining on these committees. The experience I have gained
while working on these committees will, I believe, be useful in my ongoing work with them.
o.
S
EASTON, STEVE
A.B. Oberlin, A.M. and Ph.D., Chicago), professor of economics, SFU since 1975.
My broad areas of research have been international trade, international finance, and economic
history although I have also worked more narrowly in the economics of education, the economics of law
and the economics of sports. Publications can be found on my web site: http://www.sfu.cal
—easton.
While at SFU I have served on innumerable committees at the departmental, faculty and university levels,
and have been associate chair, graduate program chair and undergraduate program chair many times.
My interest in Senate Policy Committee on Scholarship Awards and Bursaries (SPCSAB) arises
naturally from the more than 20 years I have served on the Senate Graduate Academic Awards
.

3
S
Committee (SGAAC) as a member from Arts. During that time I have had the opportunity to see a variety
of policies and programs ebb and
flow.
As part of a general theme of changing student needs and SFU
student recruitment in a changing financial environment, my hope is that I can use this experience to
benefit the development of our programs.
My interest in the issues about which the Senate Committee on Enrolment and Management and
Planning (SCEMP) is concerned goes back to 1979 when I served on an ad hoc President's committee to
see how we could change our recruitment of grade 12 students. I have recently participated in a similar
sort of exercise with members of the Registrar's office, and the Academic VP. Economists are by
vocation and avocation interested in constrained choice. With tuition likely to play a more substantial role
in university finances in the future, SFU can no longer rely on student application and enrolment as a
passive entity from which we select the best. Times have changed and for at least the next century we a
likely to be making choices continually affecting enrolment. We should plan now to institutionalize our
student recruiting with this kind of a horizon in mind.
The Senate Committee on University Priorities (SCUP) may be a place in which my institutional
experience can be helpful. We are likely to find that new funding arrangements for the institution will
place new stresses on our goals. As an economist, trading-off among alternatives is something that I
appreciate and understand. There are seldom cases in the University in which everyone agrees that we
have enough resources. Having taught at two private sector institutions as well a public sector university
outside of Canada during my academic career, perhaps I bring additional perspective to this committee.
EL-NASHAR, SAMER
I am a P
year student at Simon Fraser University and am applying for the following boards:
Diverse Qualifications Adjudication Committee (DQAC), Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships,
• ?
Awards and Bursaries (SPCSAB), Senate Undergraduate Adjudication Awards Committee (SUAAC),
and the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies (SCUS).
Biography and Statement:
My name is Samer El-Nashar. I was born in Beirut, Lebanon and have lived in the U.S. and
Canada for the past 20 years. I graduated from Queen Elizabeth Senior Secondary in 1998 and was
enrolled in the French Immersion program where I graduated with honor standings. Towards my final
years of graduation, I was President of my grad class, received several scholarships and awards, and was a
member of the Optimist club, and won several public speaking competitions. I volunteered extensively
at walk-in clinics in Surrey, at the Surrey Memorial Hospital in the geriatrics unit, at UNICEF and the
local newspaper The Leader. After graduating high school, I attended Simon Fraser University in the
General Sciences program. I took several science courses in Kinesiology, Chemistry, Physics,
Biochemistry, Math, and Biology for my first couple years while attending S.F.U. I then started
exploring other disciplines such as English, Spanish, Linguistics, Psychology, Statistics, Economics,
Business, Marketing, Computer Science, Music and Visual Arts. I found my passion in Visual Arts,
where I excelled in Studio practice and Art and Culture studies and soon realized my new major.
Hopefully, I will be graduating with a B.F.A. in Visual Arts in Spring 2005 specialising in sculpture,
video and installation work with certificates in Liberal Arts and Health Science.
Since having entered into the School of Contemporary Arts, I have continued to volunteer
extensively and take on several leadership roles. I was Treasurer of the Visual Arts Student Union at
S.F.U., where I helped raise funds for the Annual Student Art Show at S.F.U., Seattle trip, the 4" Year
Grad Show, equipment for the Visual Art Studio, the S.F.U. Visual Art Publication, the Art and Culture
Student Union and their first annual Student Show. I also participate in several shows and exhibitions in
and around S.F.U. I am a member of the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Young Associates, I am a
S
member of Video-In and currently assist them with the marketing and public relations of the newly
created video screening called Cue-Up for emerging artists and producers from S.F.U., U.B.C., and
E.C.I.A.D. I also volunteer at the Surrey Art Gallery as an Assistant for artists and in the marketing
division. Currently, I am the President of the Visual Arts Student Union at S.F.U. and have received two
consecutive Service Awards from S.F.U. School of Contemporary Arts and continually help to promote
the Arts in and around S.F.U. I am passionate for the Arts and strive for excellence and continual

4
exploration of other disciplines to better my understandings of issues and people in the community and
society at large. I am eager to use the skills I have acquired over time to better Simon Fraser University
and my learning experience in any way possible. Serving on any of the boards I have selected would be
an honour and will only strengthen both my learning experience at Simon Fraser University and the
school.
ETI'YA, AVIV
PhD Student, Department of Geography
Senate Library Committee
Senate Graduate Adjudication Awards Committee
Senate Appeals Board
International Student Exchange Committee
I am interested in the mechanisms that drive the university and I know that I have past experience
in handling them. I was an elected representative at my previous university both in the student union and
in the teaching support staff union. I would like to broaden my knowledge to other areas beside my
subject of study. During most of my studies I worked full time in areas that are somewhat different from
my area of expertise with a mutual benefit for me and others.
GREGORY, TITUS
Statement: Senate Committee on Continuing Studies (SCCS)
I would like to sit on the Senate Committee on Continuing Studies because I think that our Continuing
Studies program is one of our university's best features. Unfortunately, many 'ordinary' full-time students
don't know much about the many varied programs that are offered. I hope to increase the visibility of
Continuing Studies within the wider university community. I am a former Senator and Governor, and I
am presently beginning a one-year term as University Relations Officer for the Student Society.
Statement: Senate Committee on University Teaching and Learning (SCUTL)
Universities have several great purposes: teaching, research, community service. However, in many
universities, research has overshadowed teaching. SFU's strong tradition of excellence in teaching needs
to be supported and enhanced. I hope to improve access to teaching workshops and seminars by
university faculty and teaching assistants, and support teaching evaluations of faculty and T.A.'s. In
addition, as an SFU Surrey student, I am familiar with the benefits and hazards of new learning
technologies, and would bring this perspective to the committee.
Statement: Calendar Committee
I am a third year Information Technology student from SFU Surrey, and I am currently the University
Relations Officer for the Student Society. I have had experience sitting on numerous university
committees, both at the departmental level and through the Senate and Board of Governors. I believe that
I would be a useful addition to the Committee.
HSIAO, WILLIAM
My name is William Hsiao, a third year PhD student in the Department of Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry (MBB). I am writing to express my interest in applying for a position on senate
committees. Two of the positions are of specific interest to me - graduate student representative to the
Senate Graduate Adjudication Awards Committee (SGAAC) and representative to the Senate Appeals
Board (SAB). I believe I have suitable experience and qualifications to serve either of the positions well.
Throughout my undergraduate degree in McGill University, I served as a student representative to
numerous faculty committees and was elected to several executive positions on student societies. As a
result of my involvement, I was awarded the McGill Scarlet Key Leadership Award in 2000. Of special
relevance to the SAB position, I was a student representative to the Committee of Student Standing of the
Faculty of Science where I heard appeals from students on their academic standings. Since I came to

5
. SFU, I held several executive positions on the MBB Graduate Caucus and was elected as the student
representative to the MBB Private Scholarship Reviewing Committee (2003) where we chose the
recipients of the MBB internal awards. These positions are testaments of my trustworthiness and my
ability to deal with confidential information. I currently hold two major external graduate scholarships
(from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and the CIHR) and am unlikely to apply for
additional scholarships. This will minimize conflict of interest if I became a member of the SGAAC,
which is my first choice.
Now, two sentences describing myself: I think you'll find that I'm easy-going and easy to work
with. I am always respectful, usually cheerful, and occasionally intelligent. Thank you for your
consideration.
IZADI, HADI
PhD Candidate, Engineering Science
I began graduate studies at SFU in Engineering Science in May 2003. I obtained my B.A.Sc.
from UBC, and my M.A.Sc. from the University of Waterloo.
I have been an SFSS Forum representative of Engineering Science Graduates since February,
2004 and have been recently re-elected as SFSS Forum representative. During my short time as SFSS
Forum representative, I have coordinated with the ENSC Graduate Student President in order to create
monthly meetings for all ENSC Grad student executives and ENSC Grad Reps (e.g. Forum, GIC) to
better communicate our position both internally within the department, and externally to the student body
at-large.
I have also been an executive of the Muslim Student Association of SFU, where I worked with
the SFSS (in particular wit6h Opast SFSS President Wade Dorvault), to plan a fundraising dinner for
. earthquake victims in Barn, Iran (Spring 2004). External to SFU, I am presently participating in a peace
initiative to engage Palestinian and Israeli youth. Our goal is to promote understanding and compassion
in youth, while providing them with the skills to become future leaders in the struggle towards peace and
justice. Please see http://www.creativepeacenetwork.ca
I am interested in becoming a Senate committee member due to my strong belief in community
service and justice.
JAMIESON, ROSS
I have been a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser
since the year 2000, having come here from a post-doctoral fellowship at Trent University. I have been
involved archaeological research in Ecuador for ten years now, and am currently running a SSHRC
funded field project in Riobamba, Ecuador. My research focuses on the Spanish colonial period.
I believe I am well qualified to sit on the International Student Exchange Committee. I have
participated in Canadian research projects in Mexico, Cameroon, Peru, and Ecuador, and was myself a
student in the United States. I have extensive experience with the adjustments students fact in attending
post-secondary institutions in other nations. I have served as an informal mentor for both Canadian
students in many foreign situations, and to students from other countries enrolled in Canadian institutions.
I would be pleased to be able to participate in the process of selection and management of students for
Simon Fraser.
JOHANSEN, ELINOR
.
My name is Elinor Johansen and I am a first term Student Senator. I am entering my fourth year
of a Political Science Honours Degree, with intention to pursue a minor in Economics as well. My area
of research for my Honours essay, which I am currently in the process of writing, is an examination of
policy theory, which will then be extended to examine and critique health policy in Canada. I have been
involved in building the SFU community, through living n Residence and as a member of the Residence
Community Standards Board, as an Orientation Leader in 2002, and as an at-large member of the

6
Constitution and Policy Review Committee of the SFSS this past year, a position I will be continuing into
the upcoming year. As well, I will be participating in "The Urban Experience" Semester in Dialogue in
Spring
2005.
I am interested in the Senate Committee on Agenda and Rules because I feel that it is important to
ensure that the policy suggestions that are considered by Senate have made their way through the
appropriate committees, and that relevant considerations are brought before the Senate from any
constituencies and channels, in a way that upholds the processes of the Senate. This is necessary to
ensure that appropriate dialogue occurs and maximum benefit is derived from the Senate. As an alternate
on the Senate Committee on University Priorities, I would seek to ensure that the priorities of the
University are indeed appropriate to the functioning of the University. The Senate Committee on
University Honours provides an opportunity to promote the University in a fashion that is consistent with
its goals and its agenda.
JOSEPH, ANDREA
Statement of Interest
I would like to serve on the Senate Committee on University Teaching and Learning as a graduate
student representative. I hold two BAs (English and Political Science) from SFU, where I have been
studying since 1994. Currently, I am an MA student in the Department of English.
My interests in university teaching have led both to a graduate career as well as to my position as
Program Coordinator at the Learning & Instructional Development Centre. In both my academic work
and my work as a staff member at SFU, I have been involved heavily in teaching and learning in higher
education. I have been a teaching assistant and attended instructional development workshops put on by
the Department of English and the LIDC. As an employee, I have organized these types of workshops
and programs. I am invested deeply in this field and will bring all my experience, both as a staff member
and as a student, to this Committee. Thank you very much for your consideration.

SCUTL application for graduate student representative
I am currently on leave from my lab instructor position in Criminology in order to pursue an
M.A. in Education (specializing in educational technology). I am interested in ways of implementing and
assessing technology to support and improve student learning. I believe that technology is a tool, and the
benefits of using technology in education will have the most impact if technology is used with an
appropriate educational strategy (e.g. in order to prevent plagiarism, education and technology are
necessary).
As a graduate student on SCUTL I would gain a better understanding of instructional policies,
procedures, and services at SFU. My experiences from being an instructor and a graduate student has
given me both theoretical and practical knowledge that will allow me to make informed contributions to
the instructional issues that are addressed by SCUTL. During my undergraduate degree, I sampled
courses from every faculty which would enable me to appreciate both the uniqueness and similarities
when looking at grading standards, teaching evaluations, and other issues within the committee's
mandate.
LAURIDSEN, KRISTI
MA. PhD Candidate - Faculty of Education
I am currently a PhD student in the Curriculum Theory and Implementation program in the
Faculty of Education; my dissertation focus will be in the area of gifted education. I hold an MA in
English Literature and a professional teaching designation from SFU; I have been teaching secondary
school for the past nine years, currently on a part-time basis while working on my doctoral studies.
Recent scholarships I have been awarded include the Simons Foundation Doctoral Entrance Scholarship,
an SFU Graduate Fellowship, and the CFUW Alice E. Wilson Award. This year, I have served on

7
. planning committees for a youth symposium held at SFU and the Women in the Academy symposium; I
am currently the acting secretary for the Education Graduate Students' Association and am running for
EGSA co-chair in the May elections.
My personal interests include travel (I have traveled extensively in Europe and Canada and also
visited Cuba and Hawaii), a variety of athletic pursuits, and creative writing. Returning to student life
after nine years in the professional workforce has been a rejuvenating chance for me to balance pursuit of
these interests with my academic work; I have been reminded of the enriching opportunities offered by
the SFU community, and my interest in committee work stems from my desire to "give back" to, and
participate actively in, that community. In my personal and professional history, I have taken on
numerous leadership and managerial roles (including, for example, serving as English Department Head
and Advanced Placement Coordinator at each of the two secondary schools where I've held positions and
directed the Gifted and Talented program at Pitt Meadows Secondary School for six years). I would
value the opportunity to contribute and learn as an SFIJ committee representative.
McINNES, MARCIA
Hi, my name is Marcia McInnes and I will try to keep this short because I know how long SFSS
meetings can last! I am an undergraduate student who is studying human geography and French
linguistics and who is currently completing the PDP program. I will be at SFU next year to take more
courses in order to complete my French and History requirements and possibly an honours degree in
Geography. I am interested in a Senate position for one of the three committees. I am interested in being
on the International Student Exchange Committee (ISEC) because of a somewhat related personal interest
in the Canadian immigration policy. I am also interested in being a part of the Senate Library Committee
(SLC) or the Diverse Qualifications Adjudication Committee (DQAC) because I want to learn more about
. how SFU operates and advocate for positive change. I am familiar with the general workings and policies
of the SFSS as I was the French Student Union Forum Representative and a member of the U-Pass
Working Group. I am also active and social around SFU and have played on the ultimate Frisbee team. I
am hard-working, friendly, and responsible.. Please consider me for one of these positions.
McKINNON, STEPHANIE
Statement of Interest
My name is Stephanie McKinnon and I am beginning my fourth year of an English and
Humanities Joint Major program. This is my first term as a Student Senator and I am excited to be
continuing my involvement in the university community. In the past, I have been involved with the
English and Humanities Student Unions, the SFSS Forum as the English Student Union Representative
and the Finance and Administrative Services Committee as a Forum Representative. I have also
participated in the Vagina Monologues and been an executive member of the Golden Key Honour
Society. I am currently on the organizational board of the West Coast Poetry Festival and in the fall I will
be participating in the "Art and the Community" Semester in Dialogue.
I would like to be on the Senate Committee on Disciplinary Appeals because I eventually want to
pursue a career in law and I feel that this committee in particular reflects my interests. I feel it is
important for students to have representation on this committee that is committed to defending their rights
and to hearing their side of the story. Further, it provides an opportunity to uphold the policies of the
university in a fair and just manner. As well, I would like to be considered for the position on the Student
Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee. As a recipient of a National Shrum scholarship myself, I
believe that I would be able to judge other students deserving of both merit and financial need based
scholarships. Moreover, this committee would provide me with the opportunity to give back to the
program from which I have benefited so greatly.
OSIKA, SARAH
This statement is meant to accompany my application to the Diverse Qualifications senate position.

8
I am in my 9' semester at SFU as a psychology major in the Faculty of Arts. I have been an
active member of the Psychology Student Union since I began at SFU and was the president for the last
two semesters which has introduced me to the administrative side of the university.
I am interested in the senate position because I would like to learn more about how the university
works "behind the scenes". I have worked in SFU Admissions as a temporary clerk typist and office
assistant under Kirk Heber since January of this year. I believe I am qualified to help make diverse
qualifications decisions because of my experience in admissions and my familiarity with the
application/admission process and the DQ procedure. I also speak to hundreds of students and can
answer most admission-related questions and give good advice on what the DQ committee is looking for,
having seen how the system works.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
OU, GEORGE
I am a Molecular Biology and Biochemistry student going into my third year at SFU. I enjoy
participating in extracurricular activities, especially committees in which I can contribute in serving
others. Diverse Qualifications Adjudication Committee and Senate Library Committee are two such
committees through which I may serve my fellow schoolmates. This is why I would like to sit on
committees as a student representative.
In the past two years, I was involved in a few events at SFU as a volunteer; Terry Fox Run,
Scientific I, as well as a volunteer for the Golden Key society at various occasions. In addition, I just
recently received the position as the treasurer of the Golden Key Society. My most notable
extracurricular experience came from my high school life where I took an active role in the Students'
Council in one of the largest high schools in the province, Burnaby North Secondary. Working with a
group of fine students and serving such a large school population gave me invaluable leadership and
decision-making experience. I believe my past experience would be an asset to the committee. ?

POUR VALI, REZA
Election Statement
I am a 4" year Molecular Biology & Biochemistry (MBB) student at SFU. Throughout the years
of my education at SFU, I have been heavily involved in various activities both on and off campus. I co-
founded the MBB Student Union in 2001, organized annual Christmas charity drives, established a
bursary, and held informative seminar series at SFU. I have also served on
six
SFU Senate committees in
the past two years: SUAAC, SPCSAB, SLC, LPAC, SNC, and CRUA. I am also an appointed Tribunal
Member of the University Board on Student Discipline (UBSD). Furthermore, I have served as the
student representative on our departmental curriculum committee (DUCC). Off-campus I volunteer at
Burnaby Hospital's emergency & children's clinic, Feilburn Care Centre, Queen's Park Care Centre, and
Canadian National Institute for the Blind. My career goal is to become a physician.
I recently won the 2004
Volunteer Vancouver Leaders of Tomorrow Award,
which is likely
the most important volunteer leadership award in BC for people aged 18-25. I am also a past winner of
SFU Alumni Award for Student Leadership,
and the
Judy Kelly Humanitarian Award.
I am thrilled
about giving back to SFU by continuing my involvement in SFU Senate Committees. I would like to
stand for
re-election
to SNC and SLC/LPAC; I would also like to stand for election to SCCS and
SCUTL. My past experience with SFU Senate Committees and various boards and organizations would
serve as an invaluable asset to optimize my performance in the aforementioned committees. I believe in
dedication, commitment, contribution, and teamwork. Thank you for giving this candidacy your
consideration. ?

SCHELLENBERG, BETTY A.
Department of English
Statement of Interest for Senate Committee on Agenda and Rules (SCAR)
I began my professional life as a high-school teacher of Science and Biology. Since earning my
graduate degrees, however, I have been working in the discipline of English as a specialist in eighteenth-
century literature and print culture. I have done considerable administrative and service work in my own
department (I am currently Chair of the department, and have been Associate Chair), on committees such
as the DTCs of other departments and the SPCSAB, and in national scholarly organizations. I am
interested now in gaining a broader perspective on the University and on its place in the community
through service on Senate.
As a member of SCAR I would aim to maintain the broadest possible view of the good of the
University, and of the role of Senate in pursuing that good. I know that I would learn a great deal through
this committee about the structures that enable Senate (and any complex decision-making body) to
function. At the same time, I bring to SCAR considerable experience in conducting group business at the
department level. I take particular interest in the challenge of designing processes which will allow
maximum transparency and participation, while enabling the work of the group to move forward.
TIERNEY, KEITH
In consideration for a position serving as a graduate student on the Senate Appeals Board, I have included
my background and experience, below.
Candidate background
In brief, I completed my BSc in Jun. 1996 (Biology, SFU), worked with Dr. Chris Kennedy until
beginning my MSc with Dr. Tony Farrell in Jan. 1998, began an MBA (UBC) in Aug. 2000, and returned
. to SFU for PhD studies Jan. 2004. My studies at SFU have included examining the impact of wastewater
tailings from Suncor Oil in northern Alberta on surrounding ecosystems, the effects of Exxon Valdez
crude oil on Pacific Herring at the Bamfield Marine Science Centre, and the effects of pulp mills in BC on
wild fish stocks at Pacifica Papers pulp mill and the Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery in Port Alberni. I
have worked with First Nations, leading a team of five and mentoring one youth. My Ph.D. research is
focused on the impact of current-use pesticides on salmonid olfaction and olfactory-mediated behaviors,
like migration. My aspiration is to become a professor in a Canadian post-secondary institution, which
will allow me to educate, perform research, and contribute to Canada.
Interest and experience
In 2002 I was elected to the board of directors for ALDA (www .alda-bc.org), the Adult Learning
Development Agency. I consider this to be one of my more worthwhile pursuits. ALDA is a non-profit
organization that has existed in Vancouver since 1988 to help identify learning-disabled adults, train them
to cope with their condition, and place them back into the workforce. I contribute to ALDA by serving as
secretary to the board. I would greatly value a chance to contribute to the Senate Appeals Board, and feel
I am qualified to do an excellent job. Since I hold an NSERC scholarship for the next two years, I will be
able to dedicate time to serving on the committee.
MCTAVISH, ROB
Rob McTavish is a doctoral student in Education at Simon Fraser University as well as a Program
Director in the Centre for Distance Education. His responsibilities in the Centre for Distance Education
include directing the use of instructional software and technologies, supporting and assisting faculty in the
development of distant education courses, and participating in national and international projects.
S
Interests include the use of computers at all levels of education and the pedagogical design of online
courses. Research he has conducted involves cognitive load and interface design, online distance
education tools and support issues, and pedagogical models for online education.
We are fortunate to have such a forward thinking and innovative library system here at SFU. To
facilitate optimum impact the library needs to foster relationships with each of the academic areas to
ensure features employed and new policies or procedures are known about and used by students. As a

10
representative I believe I could not only help direct the library as part of a committee but also act as a
spokesperson for their initiatives and services to my fellow students.

Statement of interest ?

This will be my second year of nomination for the SCODA. I see Academic Honesty as the major
subject of concern in SCODA. Having taught the first year program in Biology for 29 years, I have seen
my share of questionable student activities. I see two problems at present : first, the SFU Code of
Academic Honesty is not impressed on new and current students nearly enough. This must be done during
our high school recruitment programs and in every course introduction. Also, our students come from
diverse countries and cultures that may have different tolerances to dishonest behavior. We need to
inform all students of our policy, demand that it is adhered to and warn of the consequences for
violations. Second, we need to encourage Faculty to report cases of academic dishonesty for disciplinary
action. It may be time consuming but it is essential for the reputation of our university. It is also important
that although our reputation has suffered in the media due to several high profile cases of academic
dishonesty, we should not elicit knee-jerk reflexes to every alleged case of academic dishonesty reported
to the university. Above all, we should, like the rule of law, assume innocence unless guilt is proven.
WALTERS, BRENTON
Hi there,
My name is Brenton Walters and I am a 3' year political science/history student here at SFU. I
have been involved in various boards at the college level previous to my experience here and hope to
continue in the future. I ran in the election for student senators and was selected by my fellow students to
represent them on the Senate. I am very interested in the governance of this institution and would like to
contribute my time and energy to this body and the following committees for which I have put my name
forward:
Senate Committee On Disciplinary Appeals, regular member
Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
Senate Committee on University Priorities, regular member
Senate Committee on Agenda and Rules
Senate Library Committee and Library Penalties Appeal Committee, alternate
I have experience sitting on a board much like SCODA at the North Island College, and believe
that I can be properly critical and objective while engaged in appeals. SCUS is of particular interest to me
as an undergraduate with two years left on my degree and concerns about the quality of education we will
be able to offer to students in the coming years. SCUP of course is extremely important, as is SCAR:
both require a heavy time and energy commitment I feel I am capable of. They are important to ensure
that SFU and the Senate, respectively, function efficiently while upholding the values of the university
community. Finally, the SLC and LPAC require a student alternate, a position that I am willing to fulfill,
if it is required.

Statement of Interest - SCIA
The internationalization of SFU is increasing. I am interested in serving on SCIA to ensure that the goals
and objectives of our international activity maintains a clear rationale for SFU's involvement. Global
politics require that we carefully detail our international activities and carefully consider who from SFU
will participate, their roles and responsibilities and most importantly, the academic and non-academic

12
benefits to be realized by SFU. I am interested in serving on SCIA to ensure that, as we embrace and
prioritize our international initiatives, we do so within the context of our core academic and research
missions on the Burnaby campus.
Statement of Interest - SCUP
The University is engaged in a period of significant growth. A number of new issues and initiatives have
significant implications for the future. New campuses, new degree programs, course accessibility,
initiatives in health research and education, academic and research space, technology, and host of other
issues, reflect the increasingly broad scholarship and evolving academic interests at SFU. I am interested
in serving on SCUP to ensure that, as we embrace and prioritize these initiatives, we maintain a clear
vision of our core academic and research missions.
ZHANG, MN
I am Xin Zhang, a Ph.D. student in Chemistry Department at SFIJ. I am interested in joining the
International Student Exchange Committee (ISEC). I would like to take the opportunity to learn new
things and to serve the SFU community. I am an international student. After spending more than two
years in my lab, I decided to learn something that I couldn't learn from the chemistry lab. I volunteered
as chemistry departmental steward in TSSU from Sept. 2002 to Oct. 2003. I was elected as TSSU Trustee
I in Nov. 2003 and I have fulfilled my Trustee duties successfully since then. I have organized the hiring
procedure for TSSU privacy officer and the TSSU spring election for Executives in the spring semester of
2004. I also joined SFU International Buddy Program from 2003-3 to 2004-1, in which I was a local
buddy to help an international student. I improved both my communication and organization skills
through these activities. I am self-motivated and cooperated. I have great working passion and actively
undertake my duties. The most important is I am glad to serve SFU community.

HARDER, DERRICK
Statement for DQAC and SCUS
My name is Derrick Harder, and I am a third-year student studying History and Labour
Studies. I would like to stand for re-election as a student at-large on both the Diverse
Qualification Adjudication Committee and the Senate Committee for Undergraduate
Studies. I have sat on DQAC since May 2003 and SCUS since November 2003, and am
proud of a spotless attendance, preparation, and participation record. I have always
endeavored to bring issues of concern between both the Student Society and the senate
committees to ensure the transparency of governance at SFU. I look forward to continuing
to represent students on both committees to the best of my abilities.
SU, JACK
Statement of Interest
My name is Jack Su, majoring in Kinesiology. I am interested in applying for the Senate
position of student member on the International Student Exchange Committee. Since my
first year in Simon Fraser University, I have been actively involved in SFU World
University Service of Canada (WUSC) local committee as an executive member. On
campus, WUSC promotes international development issues and is responsible for the SFU
Student Refugee Program (SRP). Through the SRP, SFU sponsors one to two refugee
students per year to continue their higher education. I am also a member of SFU Red
Cross club. My interest in health from a global perspective has led me to participate in an
internship in Malawi this summer through WUSC. I hope to gain an eye opening cross-
cultural experience that will help me achieve a better understanding of what life is like in
a developing country compared to life in Canada.
Through my involvement with WUSC, I work closely with SFU International to
implement the SRP on campus. Furthermore, my experience in Malawi and my
background as an immigrant from Malaysia will provide me a critical perspective on
International Exchange programs. Thank you for your consideration.
