Candidate Information
Elections at Senate Meeting - Monday, September 12, 2005
Mclnnis, Cohn
Dear Senators,
My name is Cohn McInnes and I am a fourth year Integrative Biology
Student*.
I spent my first
two years at Douglas College where I obtained an Associates in Science Degree and then I
transferred to SFU last fall. I am enthusiastic in all that I do and would really like to be a member
of the Committee to Review University Admissions. I am a fairly decent student with an A-/A
cumulative grade point average and I also like to participate in many extra curricular activities.
Although many of the activities I participate in are off campus, such as volunteering on the
Blackcomb Ski Patrol or volunteering at the Royal Columbian Hospital, I do spend lots of time
on campus with friends running, working out, playing drop-in basketball, and, of course,
studying.
There are a number of reasons why I would like to be on the CRUA. First, I feel that the
admission committee has an extremely important job and needs to be very responsible, especially
as competition for admission increases. There are certain factors, such as the documented high
school grade inflation, where I feel the
1
committee has a challenge to ensure fairness and equal
opportunities to all students. Second, as a transfer student from Douglas College, I feel that I can
bring a fresh perspective to help ensure that the transfer process is realistic and fair for college
students. For example, I am aware that once acollege student has an Associates Degree that
?
admission requirements are quite low. However, without an Associates Degree, which can be
difficult even for strong students to obtain in two years (due to course availability), university
admission may be difficult to obtain. Finally, I am interested in the admission process as a whole
and feel that I would be a great addition to the Committee to Review University Admissions.
I appreciate the time put into reading and considering my application.
Sincerely
Cohn McInnes
*please note that although I am going into fourth year, I am planning to do an honours degree, in
which case, I will be able to fulfill the entire term of the position up to May 31, 2007.

S
Dear Senators,
My name is Xenia Menzies and I'd like to apply for the alternate position on the Committee to
Review Undergraduate Admissions. I think this would be a position which would I would be
well suited for in a number of ways. I am currently entering my second year, and therefore will
be eligible for this position for the entire term, which is not likely of the other applicants. I have
sat on academic and advocating committees within the university as a student representative and
I feel I have gained much from them. In addition, I have a broad based student involvement, as
an elected member of the SFSS Board of Directors as well as a VP in the Business
Administration Student Society and a member of more than three campus clubs. I think this has
allowed me to be involved with a wide range of students and university experiences.
I feel this position is about having an objective viewpoint of the University's capacities and
goals, and complimenting that perspective with an ability to empathize with unusual and
extraordinary circumstances of the individual in question. I hardly can claim to have mastered
those skills but I'd like to be able to develop and practice that balance. I would endeavor to make
all decisions to the best of my abilities. I think that is the best reason to elect anyone for this
position.
Thank You,
Xenia Maren Menzies
