Subject: INT 12 replacement - memo etc.
In 2004 we were advised by the Ministry of Education that the course
INT 12 Information Technology 12 would be discontinued at the end of the 2005/06 school year.
This is a provincially-authorized course which SFU applicants may use as a
List 3 science group elective to satisfy the fifth grade 12 course
requirement for university admission. It has been regularly counted in the
admission averages of many applicants.
In the place of INT 12, a number of related new provincially-authorized
courses are available to BC/YT schools.
ICTC 12 Applied Digital Communications 12
ICTM 12 Digital Media Development 12
ICTP 12 Computer Programming 12 ICTS 12 Computer Information Systems 12 ICTh 12 Information &
Communications Technology Survey 12
and their French language medium equivalents:
ICTCF 12 Conims numnerique appl 12 ICTr' 12 Devt inedias nulTeriques 12
ICTPF 12 Program par ordinateur 12
ICTSF 12 Systems informatiques 12
• ICTXF 12 Tech info & coinms explorat 12
Course design is modular. There are Gr 11 equivalent courses, but there is
no strict prerequisite structure.
These courses may be offered optionally in 2004/05 and 2005/06 (current year
and next year) and with full implementation by 2006/07, when INT 12 is no
longer valid.
In order to determine whether the new courses should be used for admission
to SFU, the Faculty of Applied Sciences and School of Computing Science were
consulted. The Integrated Resource Packages for the new courses were made
available. In early September 2004, the Associate Dean gave an unofficial
response - prior to consideration by FAS committees - ICTP 12 and ICTh 12
looked like promising courses for List 3 Science and Fine and Performing
Arts groups respectively. In the meantime, FAS was engaged in the process
of a formulating an overall revision to its entrance requirements (now
almost complete).
The following response was received on 25 May from Dr. B. Bart, School of
Computing Science:
"Our UPC has reviewed the IT 11/12 documents and the committee felt that
these were "strong documents" with "sensible choices" in their curriculum.
In its implementation, it was felt that teachers might be ill-equipped to
teach the VB, Java, C++,
uia
etc required of them. It was suggested that --
.
SFU's School of Computing Science could offer Grade 11/12 teachers
courses/workshops on such topics, in coordination with the PD program of the
school boards."

I submit this to SCUS as a recommendation that the 10 new courses listed
above be accepted as suitable List 3Grade 12 courses (no provincial exams)
for university admission.
I am assuming that they should be in the sciences group.
We requested and received some comments from a school that offers 3 of these
courses. I will share these comments with SCUS members, if they would be
useful.

Hi. Nick,
Our UPC has reviewed the IT 11/12 documents and the committee
felt that these were "strong documents" with "sensible choices"
in their curriculum.
In its implementation, it was felt that teachers might be ill-
equipped to teach the VB, Java, C++, UNL, etc.. required of them.
It was suggested that SFUs School of Computing Science could
offer Grade 11/12 teachers courses/workshops on such topics, in
coordination with the PD program of the school boards.
Please keep us apprised of any further developments with the
high school computing curriculum.
Sincerely,
Brad Bart.
