Additional Candidate Statements (rec'd after May 31, 2005)
?
for Senate Committee elections at June 13, 2005 Senate Meeting
Dear Senators,
I am now entering my second term as the Faculty of Science Representative for the SFSS. I have
been a Student at Large on the SUAAC for several months as well. I am also a newly elected
Student Senator.
The library offers one of the most important services at SFU. In this respect I believe that
maintaining this service as best as possible is something that, as a student, I feel responsible to
do. Due to my involvement in the SFU community I will be able to bring a broad perspective to
the committee each time we meet. Due to this I will hopefully be able to support the library and
its objectives in a way that will benefit students as best as possible.
Further, due to my experience with Senate Committees, and with the SFSS I am aware of
the constraints that are put on bodies such as the Senate Library Committee. I have made it a
point to ensure that I am timely, as well versed as I can be and I take into account what fiscal
constraints pertain to the body that I'm involved with.
My interest in the library as a service and willingness to represent students in a fair manner
makes me a very appropriate candidate to be a member of the Senate Library Committee. I hope
that you consider my experience and willingness to be active in the SFU community when
choosing the next Senate representative to the Senate Library Committee.
Sincerely,
.

B.Sc., 1st class Honors in Chemistry, Minor in Mathematics, Simon Fraser
University, 2004.
Undergraduate awards: Gordon Shrum Entrance Scholarship and others
Postgraduate awards: NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship (Master's),
2004-2005; NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship (Doctoral), 2005-2008:
Coming from a large family, I am sensitive to the difficulty of financing a
student's post-secondary education and the importance of scholarships,
awards and bursaries in aiding individuals to overcome financial barriers to
post-secondary education. As an undergraduate I assisted recruitment of
potential scholarship winners. Now that I have graduated I am seeking other
ways to give back to the university that played a significant role in my
success. I feel that my own experiences are well matched to service on the
Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries (and the
Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee), and I hope that I will be
able to aid both the University and award recipients in that capacity.

?
June 13, 2005 Senate Meeting
Johansen, Elinor
My name is Elinor Johansen, and I am a dedicated advocate for students. I have just recently
completed my first term as a student Senator and was reelected for a second. This past year, I
have been a vocal member of Senate, championing students' interests and concerns. I very much
want to continue this work through the committees of Senate. These committees are an
important venue to express the concerns of students in the decision making process. Both my
experience as a student Senator as well as my time volunteering with and working for the
Student Society have instilled a desire to become actively engaged in the University. Beyond
this, I have in the past been active in the University community as an Orientation Leader, a
member of the Residence Community Standards Board, and an executive of the Political Science
Student Union.
I have greatly enjoyed participating in Senate and its committees, and hope to bring my
experience and enthusiasm forward for another year.

Leslie, Dan
Personal:
My interest in University started as a keen motivation to excel in the field of my interest.
Soon after I arrived, however, my interest broadened. The narrow academic vision I had set out
for myself was shattered by the personal experiences that University life afforded me. Over time
I've become heavily involved in the student society and the CMPT DSU, with the intent to
spread the powerful experiences I encountered as a first year student.
Senate Appeals Board:
I suppose my interest in becoming a member of the Senate Appeals Board stems from my
belief that without vigilance, fairness and equity will pass to the wind. As a member of the SAB I
hope to bring an objective understanding to the process. Too often in my life I've seen
complicated situations dismantled readily via a razor of simplicity, when life itself demands a
deeper investigation and a more complicated solution to the sometimes difficult situations it
places us in.
Senate Library Committee:
To be honest, in the past I've hardly used the library. I had little concept of what went on
in it's silent halls, or what services the staff and facilities could provide. Over the last year,
however, I've opened up to it, and in the process become aware of the various plans and projects
for making the library an attractive facility for student use. In my interactions with the CMPT
. DSU it's been a priority to myself that we continually assess how we can attract more active
members into the fold, and how we can keep ourselves relevant. I think this drive would fit in
well with the Senate Library Committee.

Steele, Stephen
Statement of Interest - DQAC vacancy
I support the policy aims of this committee and would like SFU to remain accessible to students
from all backgrounds.
Wu, Diane
Hi. My name is Diane Wu and I am currently in my third semester towards a major in
Computing Science. I am currently on the CSSS (Computing Science Student Society) executive
as Vice President of Activities. I also currently chair the ChicTech committee (a program from
the Women in Computing Science club). I would like to get more involved, which is why I'm
interested in this position. I'm a rather organized person and have very good time management
skills.
I am interested in being on the Senate Library Committee, because I was in the Library Club in
high school and am familiar with library administrative details. I also really appreciate the
services given by the library, and would love to contribute my part.
Also,
I am interested in being on the Diverse Qualification Adjudication Committee. One of the things
I love the most about university is the diverse backgrounds and talents that resides within the
student body, and I believe that students should have a fair chance at an education even if they
did not excel in high school. Thus, I would love to be on this committee and help to give students
with diverse qualifications a fair chance at a post-secondary education.
