Committee to Review University Admissions (CRUA)
Calendar Year 2004
(January to December)
The Committee to Review University Admissions (CRUA) receives appeals from applicants to
undergraduate and graduate studies who have been denied admission to Simon Fraser University, but who
believe that they have special circumstances that the University should consider in evaluating their
admission submission.
An individual who has been denied admission and wishes to appeal must submit an appeal in writing, to
CRUA, specifying the special circumstances to be considered. All appellants have the option to appear in-
person, or to have a representative appear on their behalf, at the meeting when CRUA reviews the
applicant's appeal. In 2004, six meetings took place: one in Spring, one in Summer, and four in the Fall
Term. Two of the four Fall meetings were dedicated to the review of a Graduate Program appeal, which is
a rare occurrence for the Committee.
In the 2004 calendar year, a total of 16 appeals were heard,
5
were sustained and 11 were denied.
The past few years have seen an overall decrease in the number of appeals to CRUA. This year, the
Committee recorded a decrease of 22
(57%)
appeals from last year (2003), a 46% decrease from 2002, and
a 71% decrease from 2001. This year's decline may be due, in part, to a drop in the required grade point
average to enter the University. That is to say, fewer students were denied entry and therefore fewer
appealed the decision.
The graph below illustrates the number of appeals received and the outcomes for Spring 2001 to Fall 2004.
S
The attached table reports the current academic standings of those appellants admitted by CRUA. In
certain circumstances CRUA may deny a student but give conditions under which a student may be
admitted to a future semester. The graph and table reflect decisions made at the hearings and do not
include subsequent admissions of students based on criteria set by CRUA.
