At its December 15, 2004 meeting SCUP reviewed and approved the terms of
reference for the Tom Buell BC Leadership Chair in Salmon Conservation and
Management, which is now forwarded to Senate for approval.

The Tom Buell Leadership Chair in Salmon Conservation and Management is endowed
by a memorial gift from the Tom Buell Foundation and by the Province of British
Columbia through the Leading Edge Endowment Fund. The Chair will be responsible for
engaging in world-class research in wild pacific salmon and complementing the existing
salmon research activities at Simon Fraser and other institutions.
The Chair will be situated in either the Faculty of Applied Sciences or the Faculty of
Science in the School of Resource and Environmental Management or the Department of
Biological Sciences, depending on the research interests of the Chair candidate. The
chair holder will be an established scholar with a record of achievement consistent with
appointment to a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair.
The term of this appointment is from
5
to 10 years and is renewable. Appointment and
renewal shall require the approval of the relevant TPC. The applicable policy is A10.06.
Income from the endowment will be used for the Chair's salary (negotiable) and benefits
with the remainder available to the Chair for research.
The teaching load of the Chair will normally be
50%
of the standard teaching load in the
department or school in which he or she is appointed.
