At its November 8, 2006 meeting SCUP reviewed and approved the terms of reference
for the Community Trust Endowment Fund Chair.
Motion
That Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors the terms of reference
for the Community Trust Endowment Fund Chair.
Rationale
The Community Trust Endowment Fund has been established in perpetuity with income
generated by the UniverCity development on campus. Earned income on the
Endowment will be used each year to support the endeavours of the Endowment, and,
in the first instance, to fund major interdisciplinary research programs at SFU.
The CTEF Chair holders will be individuals who have distinguished themselves at a high
level in their fields of research. Their research must complement and support the
interdisciplinary research plan of the CTEF-funded program.
The attached terms of reference have been reviewed for consistency with applicable

Overview
The Community Trust Endowment Fund has been established in perpetuity with income generated by the
UniverCity development on campus. Earned income on the Endowment will be used each year to support the
endeavours of the Endowment. The first
$3.5
million earned income will be used to fund major
interdisciplinary research programs at SFU at the level of up to
$500,000
per annum for a maximum of five
years, renewable.
Purpose and Objectives
These interdisciplinary research programs will have the following goals:
?
To enhance SFU's research intensity and distinctiveness.
• To support the implementation of the University's Strategic Research Plan, particularly with regard
to promoting interdisciplinary research.
• To attract and support outstanding students through the provision of graduate fellowships,
particularly students who will enhance the University's research capacity and whose education will
be enhanced by a research-intensive experience.
The hiring of new, continuing faculty with outstanding records in research and graduate teaching would be
wholly consistent with the goals and aims of the CTEF. It is proposed that faculty appointments supported by
the CTEF should carry the title of Community Trust Endowment Fund Chair (CTEF Chair).
Terms of Reference of the CTEF Chairs
CTEF Chairs will be appointed through searches external to the University.
The Chair holders will be individuals who have distinguished themselves at a high level in their fields of
research. Their research must complement and support the interdisciplinary research plan of the CTEF-
funded program.
The CTEF Chairs will be actively engaged in graduate student supervision and in graduate and
undergraduate teaching. The CTEF Chairs will mount a forefront research program that attracts major
research funding from the national granting councils and other appropriate sources.
The CTEF Chairs will provide academic leadership in their fields, not only within SFU but also regionally,
nationally, and internationally.
The term of the Chair is for the duration of the funding of the CTEF research program.
