Appendix to Senate Paper S.06-79
Candidate Information for elections at Senate
?
Meeting of June
5,
2006 ?
(Includes statements received as of May 23, 2006)
Gregory, Titus
I am nominating myself to sit as a member of the following Senate committees for the upcoming
year: Calendar Committee (Student Member), Senate Committee on Continuing Studies (Student
Senator), and Senate Committee on University Teaching and Learning (Undergraduate Member).
Here are my candidate write-ups for these committees:
Calendar Committee
I have served on the Calendar Committee for the past two years as a student member. This
committee has had to make difficult decisions regarding the scheduling of the annual reading
break and regarding the scheduling of exams on Sundays. During my tenure, I have striven to
balance the priority of academic mission of the University with the various needs of students,
faculty, and staff. Since this committee meets very rarely, I believe that it is important to have a
continuing student voice who can speak to the past decisions of the committee.
Senate Committee on Continuing Studies
.
?
1 have served on the Senate Committee on Continuing Studies for the past two years as an
alternate student member, and I would enjoy the opportunity to continue to serve as a student
senator member. The work of the Continuing Studies department is extremely diverse, and has
brought the University to many communities throughout British Columbia. I am particularly
interested in encouraging further development of Continuing Studies programs based at SFU
Surrey, to serve the communities south of the Fraser River.
Senate Committee on University Teaching and Learning
I have served on the Senate Committee on University Teaching and Learning (SCUTL) for the
past two years as an undergraduate student member. I have been very encouraged by the
enthusiasm of the members of this committee to promote better teaching and learning at SFU.
During my time on this committee, we have discussed instructor evaluations, standard course
information sheets, online learning, and have reviewed the work of the Learning and
Instructional Development Centre.
As of September 2006, new undergraduate students at SFU will be subject to the new
Undergraduate Curriculum Initiative. It is crucially important that SCUTL keep a close eye on
these students, to ensure that students receive the support they need to complete their W, Q, and
B requirements, and to make any changes that may be necessary to ensure that the Initiative is
successful in its goals.
Halpern, Erica
My name is Erica Halpern, and I am interested in sitting as a student representative on the
Senate Committee on University Priorities (commonly referred to as "SCUP"). My experience
and passion makes me an ideal candidate: I just started my second term on both Senate and the

Page 2
Simon Fraser Student Society Board of Directors. Through senate I sat on the Research Ethics
Board for two semesters. I also was the alternate on the Senate Committee on University
Priorities for a term that ended on May 31St 2006. However, I would now like to be a regular
member of this committee.
The terms of reference and issues that this committee deal with interest me greatly, and
directly relate to the reasons that I decided to get involved within the campus community in the
first place. Through my three years at Simon Fraser University and extensive work on campus, I
have become very familiar with SCUP's important role within senate and the university
administration, and would like to offer my perspective to the committee to ensure the university
is a place in which students can take pride.
Thank you for your consideration.
Janzen, Grant
Hi, my name is Grant Janzen and I am currently a full time member of SCODA and I would like
to be eligible for a re-election.
Lennon, Mary Catherine
To members Senate,
I put forth my name for the Senate Committee on University Priorities for the term of June 1,
2006 to May 31, 2007, as I am interested in sitting on this committee. I think that as a graduate
student I will be able to offer insight into the needs of the growing grad population at the
university.
Further to this, in my own studies as an Education MA student, I focus on Post-secondary
education, particularly on university internationalisation, but also on policies, organisation and
activities. I believe this gives me a solid theoretical background for the practical work of this
committee, and shall enjoy the work as I begin my EdD in the fall.
Lewis, Glyn
My name is Glyn Lewis, I am the Member Services Officer at the Simon Fraser Student Society
and a student senator.
SCIA:
I would very much like to be considered for an at large position on the senate committee on
international activities. I have actively participated in the International Co-op exchange program.
I wish to work with the committee to ensure any international partnership the University engages
into is in the best interests of students and faculty, will benefit the reputation of SFU, and takes
into serious consideration the human rights situation of the said location.
ISEC:
I would very much like to be considered for the student position on the international student
exchange committee. I have actively participated in the International Co-op exchange program. I
wish to work with the committee to ensure students are sent to safe environments, that there are
mechanisms available for eventualities that may arise and the credit exchange students will
obtain is compatible to SFU standards.

McCollum, Brett
Ph.D. student in Chemistry.
B.Sc., 1st class Honors in Chemistry, Minor in Mathematics, Simon Fraser University, 2004.
Undergraduate awards: Gordon Shrum Entrance Scholarship and others
Postgraduate awards: NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship (Master's),
2004-2005; NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship (Doctoral), 2005-2008.
Senate Committee on Academic Integrity and Student Learning and Evaluation
Technology continues to advance and so does the inventiveness of a minority of students who
choose to ignore SFU's policies on academic integrity. As a former undergraduate and current
doctoral student at SFU, maintaining the value of a degree granted by this institution is important
to me. I hope to be given the opportunity to share my experience with this committee as they
work to ensure that there are sufficient standards promoting honesty in course work and
evaluation processes.
Senate Committee on Enrollment Management and Planning
SFU has a reputation for producing superior graduates. Part of this success stems from our
admission standards. As the university continues to grow it is important to maintain our
expectation of excellence. Additionally, while increasing the number of annual master's and
doctoral graduates is a goal of the university, it is important that the resources for graduate and
undergraduate students are not spread too thin. I hope to be able to serve on this senate
committee and help maintain the equilibrium between enrollment increases and academic
performance.
Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships Awards and Bursaries/Senate Graduate Awards
Adjudication Committee
Coming from a large family, I am sensitive to the difficulty of financing a student's post-
secondary education and the importance of scholarships, awards and bursaries in aiding
individuals to overcome financial barriers to post-secondary education. I have enjoyed my one
year term serving on this committee and desire to continue in this role.
Menzies, Xenia
Senate Committee Student At Large - Statement of Interest
Dear Senators,
I am applying to three Senate Committees for the upcoming term. I intend to be not only a full-
time student during this term, but also a full-time member of the Simon Fraser University
Community. I have varied and significant experience on campus, ranging from a Dean's Search
Committee to a term elected to the Student Society's Board of Directors. I am committed to
making a positive contribution to this institution in my time here. I only hope that you will allow
me the privilege of doing so on your committees.
Senate Committee on University Honours
I would like to sit on the Senate Committee on University Honours because I feel it is one which
builds connections with our community at large and the Academic Community as a whole. I feel
that honours should be bestowed in alignment with our vision and our mission statement and

Page 4
those values which Simon Fraser University holds most deeply. I would like to see more
innovators and leaders recognized at SFU through University Honours. I believe this is a bond
that ties them to the University community and one which both parties value.
I have served the University on the Dean's Search Committee for the Faculty of Business and the
TD Canada Trust Award for Teaching Excellence. I also represented students most recently as
the Faculty of Business representative to the Simon Fraser Student Society's Board of Directors.
I have close ties to the Business Administration Student Society, where I have held a term as a
VP Inter-University and continue to contribute my time and ideas. I am also a member of half a
dozen various clubs on campus. These ties and experiences will allow me to bring a broad view
as a student-at-large on the Committee on University Honours.
Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
I would like to sit on the Committee for Undergraduate Studies because of my enthusiasm and
interest in the curriculum of Simon Fraser University. In my time here, I have taken courses
which interest me most, and have always sought out those classes which were most intriguing in
my field.
I would encourage and promote such courses and curriculum as the China-SFU dual degree
program, the semester in dialogue and courses in leadership and creative thinking. I find that
innovative classes where students can interact and engage with their professors and peers are not
evident as they could be at SFU. I am aware that the University is developing more interactive
curriculum and I applaud these initiatives. While some already do exist, they are often not
promoted enough to the student population. I would seek to bridge that gap while encouraging
even more such programs to exist.
Senate Committee on University Teaching and Learning
I have a keen interest in University Teaching and Learning. I have sat on the TD Canada Trust
Excellence in Teaching Award Committee. I've seen the methods used to asses teaching for
awards and I have many suggestions and many questions to bring to a committee with the charge
of continuously bettering the Teaching and Learning of this institution.
I have sat on the Dean's Seach Committee to the Faculty of Business. I found the experience to
be eye opening about, both the assessment of professors, and the emphasis placed on teaching
and learning at our University. The assessment methods seem to be incongruent with the
capacity to identify good teachers. This is a problem that I understand many Universities struggle
with. Yet, I believe that alternate methods can, and should be, looked at and encouraged for our
University to thrive. I have had many amazing professors in my time at SFU, yet I have found
the assessment process not to be reflective of their efforts. I have also experienced situations
where there seemed to be no avenue for students to express their dismay with either professors or
teaching assistants. Through my experience at SFU, I have learned these avenues now. Yet, I feel
the average student has little opportunity to learn of them, nevertheless, utilize them.
In addition, I have a personal attachment to such a committee as I've been a teacher on a much
smaller scale myself. I've been an instructor in the Army Cadet Program for four years. The last
two of which, I have been training and assessing other instructors. I've passed national teaching
exams and received awards.
I believe that Simon Fraser University has amazing professors and teaching assistants
whose contributions should be furthered and assisted by this committee.

Scott, Jennifer
Statement of Interest
I am currently completing my master's degree in the English department at SFU; I will be
entering the PhD program in September of 2006. I have been a teaching assistant for English 105
(Introduction to Fiction) as well as English 104 (Introduction to Prose Genres). I completed my
undergraduate degree at the University of Winnipeg, where I had the opportunity to be involved
in several departmental committees: I was the student representative on the departmental hiring
committee; I also acted as a department liaison while fulfilling my role as student representative
for the English Students' Association.
During my undergraduate degree, I worked outside of the academic environment, which
provided me with professional experience in a corporate workplace. I also served as a volunteer
on many professional committees for both my company and for my union, acting as a district
vice-chair, the workplace health and safety representative, as well as the national women's
committee representative for my region. I also volunteered at the NEEDS Centre for War-
Affected Families, acting as an English Second Language Teaching Assistant for the refugee
women's English Language class.
Because I will be part of the Simon Fraser community for the next four years, I am
interested in realizing a better understanding of the overall structure of the university. I feel that I
will bring my years of non-academic professional experience as well as the professional
academic work I have already had the opportunity to undertake with me as Graduate Student
Representative for the University Senate Committee, as well as the Graduate Student
. Representative for the Senate Library Committee (Alternate). I am committed to both teaching
and academics, and I look forward to the opportunity to increase my experience and knowledge
by working with the Senate.
Warawa, Rachelle
Currently, I am pursuing my Master of Science in Population and Public Health in SFU's new
Faculty of Health Sciences. I began my graduate studies after working for five years in the
nursing profession. My interests include health conditions and their relationship to the social
environment, economic and social policies as a means of improving conditions, and social
solidarity and equity as fundamental principles of health. I am interested in these topics within
the framework of community initiated projects and practical, applicable recommendations.
I consider Senate membership part of a broader path of social responsibility inherent to my
development as an effective and well-rounded professional in the population and public health
field. As a student benefiting from the University's vision for growth in health related programs,
I believe I am well qualified to sit on the Senate Committee on University Priorities. This
committee provides opportunities to develop skills in researching, planning, and implementing
University programs and policies, and I am confident that I can make an immediate and valuable
contribution to SCUP's work.
Thank you for your consideration.

• Several years of senior management in Human Resources including training and
development and the leadership of employee groups.
• Member of EMBA Alumni Endowment Fund Committee.
• Past President, Alumni Executive Board and MBA Alumni Association.
• Recipient of Outstanding Alumni Award, 2002 - Service to the University.
I would appreciate your support in electing me to the Convocation Senator position on SCUP.
