SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY?
DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES?
MEMORANDUM
TO:
?
Senate
FROM: ?
Jonathan Driver, Chair, Senate Graduate Studies Committee
SUBJECT: Graduate General Regulation 1. 12.4 - Readmission
(GS200609)
DATE: ?
March 27, 2006
At its meeting of 13
th
March 2006 Senate Graduate Studiesommi ee approved the
following changes to the graduate general regulation 1. 12.4 - ea ission, to take effect
on September 2007, and recommends these changes to Sena or approval:
From:
1.12.4 Readmission
Under exceptional circumstances and with the recommendation of the chair of the graduate
program committee, a student who did not complete the degree requirements within the maximum
time, and who was thus required to withdraw, may be readmitted for one semester only to complete
those requirements. Final approval for readmission is by the dean of graduate studies.
• ?
To:
1.12.4 Readmission
A student who did not complete the degree requirements within the maximum time, and
who was thus required to withdraw, may be readmitted for one semester only to complete
those requirements. The semester of readmission may be no later than the ninth semester
after the one in which the student withdrew from the program. The student applies for
readmission to the relevant graduate program committee, who will make a
recommendation to the dean of graduate studies. Final approval for readmission is by the
dean of the graduate studies. Readmission decisions may be appealed in the same way as
admission decisions (see 1.16.3).
Rationale:
The regulation allows a former student to be readmitted to defend a thesis after leaving
SFU. It is inappropriate for the university to award degrees many years after a student has
completed certain degree requirements, such as courses and comprehensive exams. Three
years would be a reasonable maximum time limit for this practice.
Motion: ?
"that Senate approve the above-noted revision to Graduate General Regulation
1. 12.4 Readmission"

MEMORANDUM
TO: ?
SGSC
FROM: ?
Jonathan Driver, Dean of Graduate Studies
SUBJECT:
?
time limits: revised proposal
DATE: ?
16th February 2005
cc:
The following item was discussed at the February 2006 SGSC meeting (GS2006.05).
Following the advice of the committee, I have made some changes to the proposal, and I
am bringing it back for the committee's consideration.
In view of various requests from former students to be readmitted to defend their theses
many years after leaving SFU, I believe that we should amend the graduate regulations
concerning this practice. I believe that it is inappropriate for the University to award
degrees many years after a student has completed certain degree requirements, such as
courses and comprehensive exams. I suggest three years as a reasonable maximum time
limit for this practice.
I also propose that this new regulation take effect September l
st
2007, thus allowing more
than a year in which former students will have time to complete their theses.
Currently our regulations state:
1.12.4
Readmission
Under exceptional circumstances and with the recommendation
of
the chair
of
the
graduate program committee, a student who did not complete the degree requirements
within the maximum time, and who was thus required to withdraw, may be readmitted for
one semester only to complete those requirements. Final approval for readmission is by
the dean ofgraduate studies.
I propose the following new version of this regulation:
1.12.4 Readmission
A student who did not complete the degree requirements within the maximum time, and
who was thus required to withdraw, may be readmitted for one semester only to complete
4

those requirements. The semester of readmission may be no later than the ninth semester
?
48
after the one in which the student withdrew from the program. The student applies for
readmission to the relevant graduate program committee, who will make a
recommendation to the dean of graduate studies. Final approval for readmission is by the
dean of graduate studies. Readmission decisions may be appealed in the same way as
admission decisions (see 1.16.3).
