Report to Senate ?
Committee to Review University Admissions (CRUA)
?
Calendar Year 2005
(January to December)
The Committee to Review University Admissions (CRUA) reviews appeals from applicants to
undergraduate and graduate studies who have been denied admission or readmission to Simon Fraser
University, but who believe that they have special circumstances that the University should consider in
evaluating their admission submission. CRUA also reviews appeals regarding transfer credit from
undergraduate admits.
An individual who has been denied admission and wishes to appeal must submit an appeal in writing, to
CRUA, specifying the special circumstances to be considered. All appellants have the option to appear in
person, or to have representative appear on their behalf, at the meeting when CRUA reviews the applicant's
appeal. In 2005 six meetings took place: two in Spring, two in Summer, and two in the Fall semester.
In the 2005 calendar year, a total of 22 appeals were heard, 12 were sustained and 10 were denied.
Although in 2005 there was an increase of 6 (38%) appeals from 2004, the overall trend over the past few
years is decreasing appeals. From 2001 to 2005 appeals decreased by 61%. This is largely due to lower
admission averages. As proportionately fewer applicants are denied entry, we are experiencing a decline in
appeals.
The graph below illustrates the number of appeals received and the outcomes from spring 2002 to fall
2005. The attached table reports the current academic standings of those appellants admitted by CRUA. In
certain circumstances CRUA may deny a student but give conditions under which a student may be
admitted to a future semester. The graph and table reflect decisions made at the hearings and do not
include subsequent admissions of students based on criteria set by CRUA.
