Senate received material at its March meeting about a proposed revision to the University's coat
of arms.
As a follow-up to that material, I would appreciate receiving a recommendation from the Senate
of Simon Fraser University concerning the proposed change to the coat of arms. The only
change being recommended is the removal of the two crosslets and the substitution of two books

so that the top part of the shield (the chief) would contain three matching books.
Motion:
That Senate recommend to the Board of Governors the revision of the University's
coat of arms to replace each crosslet with a book, with the corresponding change
being made in the University's flag.
At the February 2006 meeting of the Board, a motion to approve this change in principle was
passed after considerable discussion that revealed mixed feelings about changing the
University's shield. While the Board of Governors has the statutory responsibility to approve the
arms of the University, an expression of view by Senate would help guide the University towards
a change or indicate that the time is not right. Following the Senate meeting, the matter will be
placed before the Board of Governors for a final decision.
The University intends to register its armorial bearings in Canada with the Heraldic Authority,
whether that means the existing coat of arms, or the revised version of the arms.
