eandidate Statement
for election at Senate Meeting - Monday, 3 December 2007
STATEMENT OF INTEREST - BENJAMIN LEE
Leadership is certainly not comfortable inaction - I believe strong leadership is
continuously developed when alternating between the roles of follower as well as leader. These
learning experiences are of equal value, and it is service, commitment and initiative that
characterizes who I am. As a third year Criminology and Health Sciences student, I am a co-op
student and in the process of completing my Certificate in Liberal Arts. At the community level, I
sharpened facilitating and teaching skills through my involvement with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Next
summer will mark 10 years of volunteering with the non-profit organization. In 2006, I earned
The Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award. Last June, The Honourable Iona Campagnolo presented
me with The Duke of Edinburgh's Leaders Recognition. Since September, I wanted to increase
my involvement within the SFU community. Already, 50 like-minded students and I are
participating in SFU' s Certificate in Innovative Leadership program. Recently, I was affirmed as
student senator representing the Faculty of Health Sciences, followed by my appointment to the
Diverse Qualifications Adjudication Committee.
When I think of the Research Ethics Board (REB), compassion, accountability and being
unafraid to take principled stands comes to mind. Vigorous analysis is also an imperative process
because the past has consistently shown to deviate from humanity to brutality is never far away.
As Canadians, the values we uphold and identify include democracy and inclusion. Therefore,
each of us has the obligation to defend informed and voluntary consent, the balance between
foreseeable harm and anticipated benefit, and the rightful expectation to privacy. Furthermore,
REB members must always consider the vulnerable - they too hold the

human dignity and respect. The arguments of "serving the greater good" have more often resulted
in the perception that those not in favour become lesser humans, whose rights then automatically
diminish. I personally view that argument with hearty skepticism.
What I have expressed and what I stand for will add to what the Research Ethics Board already
exemplifies. Thank-you for considering my nomination.
