At its October 24, 2007 meeting SCUP reviewed and approved the terms of reference
for the Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts, in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
Motion
That Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors the terms of reference
for the Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts.

of the Appointments Committee, the specific terms of each annual
engagement can be responsive to the candidate's practice as well as
developments in the discourse of visual arts. This openness is in
keeping with the experimental nature of the School for the
Contemporary Arts, which encourages critical thought, innovative
practice and interdisciplinary activity.
The downtown location of the new SCA provides opportunities for a
variety of public interactions that will be an important aspect of this
Chair. Support for the candidates research and presentation
activities, will include a budget for materials, installation costs, travel
endowment fund.

Terms of Reference
Overview
The Audain Foundation agrees to donate $2 million (CAD) to the School for the
Contemporary Arts Capital Campaign which will be matched with $1 million from the
Burnaby Mountain Endowment Fund Matching Program to create the Audain Visual Arts
Teaching Gallery and the Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts.
The Audain Foundation Endowment Fund will be established at Simon Fraser University
by the Audain Foundation, in partnership with Simon Fraser University at the $1 million
level. The Fund will support the Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts in the School for
the Contemporary Arts.
This Chair will provide a public face to important intellectual, teaching and community
outreach traditions in the visual arts at Simon Fraser University.
The Chair will be funded by a combination of the annual income from the endowment
and the equivalent of a base funded position (assistant professor step 4) provided annually
by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
Purpose and Objectives
The Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts will enhance understanding and raise the public
profile of the visual arts by supporting the activities of a scholar of stature in the visual
arts whose work demonstrates an engagement with contemporary art and ideas of
significance to the local visual arts community. The visiting chair would interact with the
students and faculty of the School for Contemporary Arts as well as the broader visual

Terms of Reference
residency supports the candidate's further development of their artistic practice. The
cornerstone of the residency is the sharing of this research through public presentation
and engagement with the students. The former can take the form of, but is not limited to,
exhibitions, talks, work with the community, etc. The latter will likely include such
activities as talks, studio visits, and projects which involve visual arts and other students.

travel and accommodation will be provided by the endowment fund.

Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts Advisory Committee
The advisory committee will be chaired by the Dean of Arts and Social Sciences and
include three faculty members from the School for the Contemporary Arts, one member
from the board of the Audain Foundation and one member from the community who is
not directly associated with Simon Fraser University. The advisory committee will
provide advice to the School for Contemporary Arts Appointments Committee on
candidates for the Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts.
Appointments
Simon Fraser University will appoint the Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts. The term
of this appointment is a minimum of four months to a maximum of one year, on a limited
term basis. The compensation will be the equivalent of the salary of an associate
professor or professor. SFU will appoint the Professor in accordance with SFU policy A
10.06:
Appointment of Specially Funded University Chairs, University Professors
and Research Fellows.
Prior to advancing a nomination, the School for the
Contemporary Arts Appointments Committee will consult with the Audain Visiting Chair
in Visual Arts Advisory Committee.

 
Audain Foundation Endowment Fund?
Supporting the Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts
Terms of Reference
Visiting chair holders will be scholars who have contributed significantly to the field of
contemporary art, specifically in the visual arts. The visiting chair holder will be situated
in the School for the Contemporary Arts at SFU. The visiting chair holder will play a key
role in enhancing public awareness of the visual arts by holding public exhibits, forums,
and events. The teaching load of the visiting chair holder will be negotiated but normally
will be a minimum of one course and a maximum of two depending upon the length of
the appointment.

The Audain Foundation Endowment Fund will be held by Simon Fraser University. The
administrator of the Fund will be the Vice President - Academic, or his/her designate. Donations
to the Endowment may be received through Simon Fraser University.
The capital of the Endowment Fund will be held in perpetuity with a portion of annual earned
income reinvested in the Endowment to protect its value over time. The annual earned interest
income (see Endowment Management Policy GP 20) will also be used to support the salary,
benefits and related activities of the Audain Visiting Chair in Visual Arts, including teaching,
research and community outreach activities.
In the event that circumstances make the specified use of the Endowment Fund no longer
practicable or desirable, the Board of Governors of Simon Fraser University is hereby authorized
to make any changes it may deem necessary in the terms or use of the Endowment Fund after
consultation with the Audain Foundation. Such changes, however, are to be in keeping as far as
possible with the original spirit and general intent of the Endowment Fund. This agreement may
be amended by mutual consent of the Audain Foundation and Simon Fraser University.
