AZIMI, TARA

To: Simon Fraser Senators

My name is Tara Azimi and I am a third year student working towards a Bachelor of Arts in the

Health Sciences and a minor in gerontology. I was born in Iran, but moved to Canada over 17 years ago

and have lived in various provinces ever since. I moved to BC three ago after the completion of high school

in Ontario where I began my studies in the faculty of sciences at SFU. During the last year I have switched

to the Health Sciences program in hopes of learning more and better preparing myself for my childhood

dream of working in a medical field. I am currently involved with the Health Science Undergraduate

Student Union where I am the chairperson and temporary forum representative. I am also the student

representative for the faculty of Health Sciences Undergratiate Student Studies Committee. I continually

work with various faculty members during recruitment processes and the many events they require help

with. I am a very ambitious, hardworking and organized individual who takes great pride in being involved

in my community, making a difference and continually interacting with others. I take my education very

seriously and through it hope to make big differences in the world.

My interest in becoming involved with the CRUA comes from my passion to be involved in the

process of choosing our students and from my experience of being involved with the Health Sciences

curriculum committee. I feel that I can be a valuable member since by applying to universities from

Ontario; I have a broad perspective and knowledge of admission requirements and high school curriculums

across Canada. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to attend this university and to get an education.

Thus, I understand the importance of the admission process and the students chosen to attend our

university. I also understand the importance of getting into a university from a student's perspective and the

range of difficulties for many. Therefore, I sincerely feel that I will not only have useful input, but will be

fair and not biased during important decision making. My interest is heightened from my desire and ability

to be a small influencing factor in the lives of future students and our university on a whole. Furthermore, I

enjoy being involved in important matters and in meeting those who are so influential at SFU.

I would like to thank you the opportunity to be a candidate and for your time and consideration.

HU, CHIA HAO (JOHN)

My name is Chia hao Hu and I am a Christian. My life as a student has also been an amazing ride,

starting from immigrating here 11 years ago not knowing how to spell my name for the first assignment. I

then returned to Taiwan and almost failed math as an honors. math student selected by the City of Taipei. I

came back. I finished high school through distance education while taking architecture at BCIT, and later

received $72,000 to study in the States but still was not able to pay; finally this May, I was advised after a

pneumothorax not to go on a plane to UK where I was accepted by all six UCAS choices to study

sustainable design. Now I am a health science student at SFU, looking forward to completing PDP while

going after a career in oncovirology. This mishmash of experiences did not make me appreciate education I

already longed for it enough but it did make me realize the difference between university life and a high

school students vision of university life. I once planned to graduate as soon as possible, but now I enjoy

what I can do as a university student. I've tasted full-time work above entry-level as a curriculum developer

and instructor last year, so I've really convinced myself that life as a university student is different and its

different in a good way. This experience has encouraged me to believe that if any student should like to try

out university, they should be given a fair chance to go at it.

I am especially interested in how participating in CRUA allows students to become involved with

appeals and consideration of special cases; I like how it is possible for students to have a say in offering

second chances. Having been denied admission before, I understand how much it means to an applicant to

be given a chance to present themselves outside of statistics. For those who are seeking re-admission, I

think their desire to return should also earn themselves the chance to depict a more complete

picture of who they are. I understand that it takes a lot of resources to consider the personal stories behind

every single student seeking admission, which for SFU involves a good amount of high school and mature

students, and so I think it is an excellent idea for interested students to help in tackling the impossible.

Though the contributions may be minute, admission into university can be a big part of a persons life so in

the end, I am willing to make whatever efforts a passionate university student can make.

KHELLA, KAM

SFU Senate Committee Statement of Interest

I'm currently a third year student majoring in Health Sciences. I've been at SFU all three years

and am well versed with the workings of the university. I come from a multi-disciplinary background. I've

taken courses in a variety of faculties, including and not limited to Criminology, Biology, Physics,

Chemistry, Philosophy and English. Furthermore, I have an extensive work/volunteer background that

makes me a well rounded individual. Currently I work for the federal government in law enforcement

(customs/immigration at Vancouver International Airport). I am constantly in contact with the public,

conduct investigations, and make numerous important decisions. Prior to this I worked in retail where I

provided customer service. I also have volunteered in a number of different capacities. I coached and co-

coached soccer for numerous years. I was in charge of running an Under 14 soccer team, holding practices,

and ordering equipment. I've also been in charge of supervising 15 students during a 3 day long camping

trip. Furthermore, I've volunteered with the Red Cross, community policing stations, and the Variety Club

of BC. From the experiences above and many others I have had a chance to develop myself as an

individual. I've built great leadership, communication and decision making skills. Moreover, my work

experience has allowed me to work with people in a variety of situations who come from different

backgrounds and cultures. I've also had the pleasure of working in a customer service environment where

addressing the needs of people is a crucial aspect.

I would like to participate in the Senate committee for a variety of reason. For starters I think it's

imperative that the undergraduate students of SFU are represented appropriately during such meetings.

Furthermore, with my diverse background I think I would contribute a lot to the committee. I have dealt

with people in a variety of situations/environments, understand people on many levels. Furthermore I've

been exposed to people from all walks of life and from all parts of the world, and have gained an

understanding of all the diversity that surrounds us. I have a passion for joining the committee and

therefore think I would contribute a lot to it. I would love to have the pleasure of being part of such an

important aspect of SFU.

I look forward to hearing your decision and thank you for your time and giving me this

RANKTh4, JAMES

My name is James Rankin and I am a first-year graduate student in the Faculty of Health Sciences. I am

writing to apply for the open student position on the ISEC. I am interested in this position because I have

significant international experience and would like to apply my experience to a committee for international

students.

In the summer of 2002 I worked as a waiter in south-west Germany on a student work exchange program.

The purpose of this program was to practise and improve my German language skills in a professional

environment. After receiving my BSc in Biology from Mcgill I traveled to Seoul, South Korea, to work as

an English teacher for 2.5 years. While I was there I also studied Korean full-time at Sogang University, in

Seoul.

I am comfortable working in both English and French, and am able to communicate at an intermediate level

in German and Korean.
