MEMORANDUM

RE:
SCEMP Motion on Minimum Number DATE:
of Transfer Credits for BC College
Admission
John Waterhous
Vice-President,

November
.
Currently in order to be considered as a BC College transfer student SFU requires 30
transferable credits. Applicants with fewer than 30 credit hours are assessed for
admission on the basis of high school grades.
By comparison, UBC requires 24 credits, UVic requires 12 units (equivalent to 24 SFU
credits) and UNBC requires at least 15 transfer credits. SCEMP considered whether, in
order to be consistent with TJBC and UVic, SFU should reduce the minimum number of
transfer credits from 30 to 24 for consideration as a BC College transfer student. There
was unanimous agreement to recommend the following motion:
Moved: M. Fizzell
Seconded: M. Plischke
"That BC College students be eligible to transfer to SFU on completion of a minimum of
24 credit hours of transferable work."

Senate Committee on Enrollment Management & Planning
?
Memorandum
FROM:
John Waterh
Chair, SCEIV
Vice Preside
RE:
College Admissions Guarantee ?
DATE: ?
November 27, 2006
A range of factors are currently impacting SFU enrollments, including:
• A declining population of 17-24 year olds;
• An increase in the number of post-secondary seats (gov't access targets) across
the system;
• An increase in the number of degree granting institutions;
• The improving BC economy resulting in higher levels of employment.
Because of these and other factors, it has become increasingly important that SFU
maintain a competitive position as the university of choice for college transfer
applicants. As such, guaranteeing admission to SFU for applicants meeting a minimum
threshold of academic achievement provides a more stable basis for enrollment
planning, and supports the development of strategic enrollment management now
underway at SFU.
Following discussion with all Faculties, there is agreement that students transferring to
SFU from college with grade point averages of 2.5 or greater are regularly admitted and
are sufficiently well prepared for academic work at SFU. Offering an admissions
guarantee to applicants in this group is recruitment positive and provides certainty for
college-level students contemplating their options for further academic work.
College transfer applicants with averages lower than 2.5 will still be considered for
admission on a competitive basis, as per the criteria detailed in the current SFU
Calendar. Associate Degree holders would continue to be admitted at .25 gpa lower
(eg. guaranteed admission at 2.25 for Associate Degree holders if the guaranteed
admission gpa for other college transfers is 2.5)
